Since the excavation of the shocking “SWISS TV 1977 (Shades 1444)” and “MINDEN 1974 (Zodiac 491)”, the excavation movement of the early SCORPIONS has become more and more active, rather than getting tired of it. The latest live album is here.
Two vintage audiences are imbued with this work. “June 26, 1976 Winterberg performance” is the main, and “March 17, 1976 Birmingham performance” is added as a bonus. Speaking of 1976, the two tours “IN TRANCE Tour” / “VIRGIN KILLER Tour” are interlaced, and the difference in time is important. Let’s look back on the schedule at that time and confirm the positions of both performances.

This is the 1975/1976 SCORPIONS. “VIRGIN KILLER” was released in the fall of 1976, and before that it was “IN TRANCE Tour”. Both of the two performances of this work were in the “IN TRANCE” era, and the main Winterberg performance was the third concert of “West Germany # 1”.
The vacuum-packed recording of such a show is just the best audience ……, maybe. No, it’s actually released as an “audience”, and it’s definitely correct from the feeling of the sound. However, the core is too tight and powerful, and there is no sense of distance. And the details that arrive along with it are vivid in every detail, and the separation of each instrument is also wonderful. I know. I’m sure it’s an audience. However, I want to immerse myself in it while thinking “Isn’t it a sound board?” Somewhere in my heart.
Moreover, this work is the highest peak version of such a famous recording. It is a master excavated by an overseas enthusiast who is working on the initial excavation these days, and it is released with a semi-challenging confidence saying “This is definitive. If there is more, please release it.” In fact, the freshness that supports the word boasts a freshness that is too much to contain the counterargument.
The direct sound is drawn on the stage of the 70’s SCORPIONS where the overflowing emotions burn your heart. As you can see from the above schedule, the closest thing to this work is the sound board album “KOLN 1975 (Shades 1460)”, so let’s organize the set together for the two performances while comparing here.

…… And it looks like this. Looking at the songs below, there are also “Instrumental” and “Hey Hey Hey”, but these are jams rather than songs. The former is a mid-guitar solo led by Uri, and the latter is mainly call and response. On the other hand, “Rock’N’Roll Queen” is an unreleased song that was not recorded in the studio. “Hey Little Woman” marked with “★” is a cover of Bobby Sherman and is valuable, but I was able to listen to it in “MINDEN 1973 (Shades 1462)”. On the other hand, “Life’s Like A River” in “IN TRANCE” is surprisingly rare. In this work, 2 takes are recorded, but not only was it not in “TOKYO TAPES”, but it is a famous ballad that I could not listen to any of the early live albums that have been repeated recently.
SCORPIONS in the Uri era, where the melody of dark melancholy is radiated, while the jams with different tastes are delicious in one performance. It is a treasure album where you can enjoy the precious “Life’s Like A River” with a direct sound that you can’t think of as an audience recording. A re-evaluation movement of the early SCORPIONS that suddenly started from the underground side in 2022. It’s a fresh and surprising day because you can taste it in real time. ★ Audience album with “March 17, 1976 Birmingham Performance” added as a bonus to “June 26, 1976 Winterberg Performance”. Especially the main Winterberg recording is great, its core is too tight and powerful, and there is no sense of distance. And the details are vivid and the separation of each instrument is great. これが1975年／1976年のSCORPIONS。『VIRGIN KILLER』が発売されたのは1976年の秋であり、それ以前が“IN TRANCE Tour”。本作の２公演はどちらも『IN TRANCE』時代にあたり、特にメインのヴィンターベルク公演は「西ドイツ#1」の３公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを真空パックした録音は、まさに極上のオーディエンス……です、たぶん。いや、実際には「オーディエンス」として公開されていますし、鳴りの感じからもきっと正しい。しかし、その芯はあまりにもタイトで力強く、距離感もない。そして、それに伴って届くディテールは細部まで鮮やかで各楽器のセパレートも素晴らしい。分かってる。きっとオーディエンスだ。でも、心のどこかで「サウンドボードじゃないか？」と思いながら浸っていたい……そんな本音も否めない名録音なのです。
しかも、本作はそんな名録音の最高峰バージョン。このところの初期発掘を手掛けている海外マニアが発掘したマスターでして、「これぞdefinitiveだ。これ以上があるなら公開してくれ」と半ば挑戦的な自信を持って公開されているもの。実際、その言葉を裏付ける鮮度は反論を封じるにあまりある瑞々しさを誇っているのです。
そんなダイレクト・サウンドで描かれるのは溢れる情感が胸を焦がす70年代SCORPIONSのステージ。上記の日程をご覧の通り、本作にもっとも近いのはサウンドボード・アルバム『KOLN 1975（Shades 1460）』ですので、ここで比較しながら２公演まとめてセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。下記の曲目を見ると他に「Instrumental」「Hey Hey Hey」もありますが、これらは曲というよりはジャム。前者はウリが主導する半ばギターソロ的なもので、後者はコール＆レスポンス主体です。その一方で「Rock’ N’ Roll Queen」はスタジオ録音されなかった未発表曲です。「★」印付きの「Hey Little Woman」はボビー・シャーマンのカバーで貴重ではありつつ、『MINDEN 1973（Shades 1462）』で聴くこともできました。その一方で、『IN TRANCE』の「Life’s Like A River」は意外にレア。本作では２テイク収録していますが、『TOKYO TAPES』になかっただけでなく、このところ連発している初期ライヴアルバムのどれでも聴けなかった名バラードなのです。
暗い哀愁のメロディをたっぷり発散させつつ、一方で１公演１公演でノリの違うジャムも美味しいウリ時代のSCORPIONS。オーディエンス録音とは思えないほどのダイレクト・サウンドで貴重な「Life’s Like A River」も味わえる秘宝アルバムです。2022年員合って突如アンダーグラウンド・サイドから始まった初期SCORPIONSの再評価ムーヴメント。リアルタイムに味わっていくから新鮮な驚きの日々。どうぞ、本作でもお楽しみください。
