Rod Stewart, whose new work “THE TEARS OF HERCULES”, which he calls “my masterpiece” for the first time in three years, is attracting attention. His latest video is here.
This work was shot at “October 22, 2021 Las Vegas Performance”. It’s the best audience shot. Due to the new Corona disaster, Rod had to stop the tour in 2020 with only a few performances of Hong, but in 2021 it will be the second half of the year and the activity will resume. The release of “THE TEARS OF HERCULES” was like that signal. First of all, let’s confirm the position of the show from such a recent situation.

This is the 2021/2022 schedule that has been announced so far. The new work was released in November, but just before that, a concert residency was held in Las Vegas. This work was the 8th performance of “Las Vegas # 1”. “Concert Residency” is a popular entertainment style in recent years, and many performances are repeated at the same venue. Unlike “concert tours”, there is no burden of traveling and it is very easy for artists. The tourist destination of Las Vegas hotels is especially popular, with a variety of musicians / bands offering residency.
It is a “concert residency” that you can never experience in Japan, but it is this work that allows you to experience the site as a special seat. In fact, this work is super-superb. It’s a multi-camera edited work that combines images taken by several cameras, but the style is not so-called “professional shot style”. It is a style in which other angles are inserted complementarily while focusing on the ferocious and superb main camera.
And the main camera is amazing. It’s strangely close! At first, it seems that it is not the front row because the head of the front row is reflected in the scene where the angle cannot be decided, but it is probably the second or third row. Only the camera pit can be seen from the gap between the front row customers. Of course, it’s only the first time I’m at a loss. By the time the first song “Infatuation” is over, the front row customers will disappear and you can fully enjoy the super-do-up. When it comes up for the first time, not only the expression of the rod, but also the wrinkles of each blonde and the costume are super clear. A screen capture is also posted on the right, but it looks more like an up-angle 1-camera pro shot than an audience shot.

…… And it looks like this. As scheduled above, there are no new songs because it was before the release of “THE TEARS OF HERCULES”. It is filled with hit songs until the early 90’s. Is “Lady Marmalade” the only one that stands out? The movie “Moulin Rouge” is also a nostalgic Patti LaBelle cover. This is the first time Rod has picked up this residency, and it’s an extremely rare repertoire that has only been sung a few times.
And the gorgeous thing of the show spelled out by such a group of famous songs! Not only is the song gorgeous, but the stage with a huge screen on its back is like a rod singing in a movie, and the colorful lighting and sexy female chorus are extremely gorgeous. It is said that a luxurious set is easy to use for a residence that does not need to move, but this work allows you to fully experience the stage as if you were lost in the dream world.

そんな本作が撮影されたのは「2021年10月22日ラスヴェガス公演」。その極上オーディエンス・ショットです。新型コロナ禍により、2020年はホンの数公演だけでツアーを休止せざるを得なかったロッドですが、2021年も後半になっていよいよ活動再開。『THE TEARS OF HERCULES』のリリースはその狼煙のようでもありました。まずは、そんな近況からショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2021年／2022年のスケジュール。新作は11月にリリースされたわけですが、その直前にラスヴェガスでコンサート・レジデンシーを実施。本作は、その「ラスヴェガス#1」の８公演目にあたるステージでした。「コンサート・レジデンシー」とは近年流行の興行スタイルで、同会場で何公演も繰り返すもの。「コンサート・ツアー」とは違って移動の負担がなくアーティストにとってはとてもラク。観光地であるラスヴェガスのホテルでは特に盛んで、さまざまなミュージシャン／バンドがレジデンシーを行っています。
日本では到底体験できない「コンサート・レジデンシー」ですが、その現場を特等席体験させてくれるのが本作なのです。実際、本作は超・絶景。何台かのカメラで撮影された映像を組み合わせたマルチカメラ編集作品なのですが、その作風はいわゆる「プロショット風」ではない。猛烈・極上のメインカメラを主軸としつつ、補完的に他アングルが差し込まれているスタイルです。
そして、そのメインカメラが凄い。異様なほどに近い！　最初、アングルを決めかねているシーンで前列の頭も映り込むので最前列ではないようですが、それでも恐らくは２ー３列目という感じ。その前列客のスキマからはカメラ・ピットしか見えないのです。もちろん、迷っているのが最初だけ。１曲目「Infatuation」が終わる頃には前列客の姿も消滅し、超ド・アップがたっぷり楽しめる。そのアップぶりと来たら、ロッドの表情はもちろんのこと、ブロンドの１本１本や衣装のシワまで超クッキリ。右に画面キャプチャーも掲載していますが、その見応えはオーディエンス・ショットと言うより、アップ・アングルの１カメプロショットかのようです。
そんな特等席視点で描かれるのは、華麗なキャリアを総括するようなヒット・パレード。ここでセットを整理し、豪華ぶりを実感していただきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。上記のスケジュール通り、まだ『THE TEARS OF HERCULES』のリリース前だったこともあって新曲はなし。90年代初頭までのヒット曲で埋め尽くされています。そんな中で唯一異彩を放っているのが「Lady Marmalade」でしょうか。映画『ムーラン・ルージュ』も懐かしいパティ・ラベルのカバー。ロッドが取り上げたのは、今回のレジデンシーが初めてであり、まだ数回しか歌っていない激レア・レパートリーなのです。
そして、そんな名曲群によって綴られるショウの豪華な事！　曲が豪華なだけではなく、巨大スクリーンを背負い込んだステージは、まるで映画の中でロッドが歌っているようでもあり、色とりどりの照明もセクシーな女声コーラスも極めてゴージャス。移動の必要が無いレジデンシーは豪華なセットが使いやすいとも言われますが、本作は夢の世界に迷い込んだようなステージをフル体験できてしまうのです。
