The POLICE collection where the masterpiece “ROXY 1979: PRE-FM RADIO REEL” just after its debut was very popular the other day. Introducing a masterpiece soundboard album that can be called the sequel.
This work was recorded in “May 4, 1979, Miami performance”. This is a stereo sound board recording recorded on the first stage of the two performances a day at the club “FAT CAT”. At that time, it was in the midst of spreading the impact of “OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR” throughout the United States, and it was also the eve of the breakthrough with the single “Message In A Bottle”. This is the outline of activities related to the debut work “OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR”. Even with this, not all of 1978/1979, but even before the debut work, before and after the release of “REGGATTA DE BLANC”, it was a live show. The next work “REGGATTA DE BLANC” also started in the UK, but invaded the United States as if to sew in between. The Miami performance of this work is the 6th performance of “North America # 3”. It was about two weeks before “ROXY 1979: PRE-FM RADIO REEL (Uxbridge 1446)”, which was released the other day and gained great popularity.
This show is also known to have been broadcast on Chicago’s radio station “WSHE-FM” and is also a famous sound source that has represented the early days. This work is the highest peak master that has appeared in recent years, but it is wonderful that the sound is a classic. The mix is a little rough only for local broadcasting in the 70’s, and the sound has a vintage feel. It’s hard to tell the general public that it’s “completely official!”, But it’s also a beauty for vintage broadcasters. The analog sound has warmth, and the rough mix is also “equal vividness”. It has nothing to do with the (pseudo) experience and scale of the concert, and the handmade feeling of the broadcast itself, “I want to introduce this hot band!”, Is irresistible.
However, the texture is different from “ROXY 1979”. “ROXY 1979” had a sharp and aggressive sound, but this one is more natural and neat. There is beauty that wraps the ensemble in total. If the passion of “ROXY 1979” is a type that cuts into your brain, this work is a type of sound board that synchronizes the performance itself with the whole body.

… And it looks like this. “ROXY 1979” was an irregular show that played “Can’t Stand Losing You” twice, but this work has no such duplication. There is no “Landlord”, but if the alternative (?) Is “No Time This Time”, there can be no complaints. For us, it is a song that revives the memories of our first visit to Japan, but it is an extremely rare song that has been played only to the extent that it is one of the best in the world. The real thrill of enjoying it with a sound board directly connected to your brain is exceptional.
“ROXY 1979” was shocking with the newly excavated master reel, but this work is superior in terms of ease of listening and beauty. It is a cultural heritage-class live album where you can enjoy the “OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR” number large-scale behavior and the extremely rare “No Time This Time” with such a sound. 先日もデビュー直後の名作『ROXY 1979: PRE-FM RADIO REEL』が大好評を博したTHE POLICEコクレション。その続篇とも言うべき傑作サウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「1979年５月４日マイアミ公演」。クラブ“FAT CAT”で行われた１日２公演のうち、初回ステージで記録されたステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。当時は『OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR』の衝撃を全米に広めている真っ最中であり、シングル『Message In A Bottle』でのブレイクスルー前夜でもあった。まずは、当時のスケジュールでそんな当時のムードをイメージしてみましょう。

これがデビュー作『OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR』にまつわる活動概要。これでも1978年／1979年のすべてではなく、デビュー作前にも、『REGGATTA DE BLANC』リリース前後もみっちりとライヴ三昧でした。次作『REGGATTA DE BLANC』も英国で制作で始まっていたわけですが、その合間を縫うように全米侵攻。本作のマイアミ公演は、その「北米#3」の６公演目。先日リリースされて大好評を博した『ROXY 1979: PRE-FM RADIO REEL（Uxbridge 1446）』の約２週間前というタイミングでもありました。
このショウはシカゴのラジオ局“WSHE-FM”で放送された事でも知られ、初期を代表してきた有名音源でもあります。本作は近年登場した最高峰マスターなのですが、そのサウンドは定番を張るのも納得の素晴らしさ。70年代の地方放送だけにミックスはややラフですし、鳴りにもヴィンテージ感がただよう。一般層に「完全オフィシャル級！」と喧伝するわけにはいきませんが、ヴィンテージ放送マニアにとってはこれも美点。アナログ感溢れるサウンドには暖かみが宿り、ラフなミックスは「イコール生々しさ」でもある。コンサートの（疑似）体験感やスケール感とも無縁で、ただひたすら「このアツいバンドを紹介したい！」という放送自体の手作り感がたまらないのです。
ただし、『ROXY 1979』とも風合いが異なる。『ROXY 1979』はエッジ鋭くアグレッシヴなサウンドでしたが、本作はもっとナチュラルで端正。アンサンブルをトータルで包み込む美しさがある。『ROXY 1979』が迸る情熱が脳内に切り込んでくるタイプだとするなら、本作は演奏そのものと全身がシンクロするタイプのサウンドボードなのです。
そして、サウンドだけでなくライヴ自体も『ROXY 1979』と似て非なるもの。比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。
