This is the schedule from 2019 that has been announced so far. Frampton, who confessed to an incurable disease in 2019, will carry out his retirement tour “FINALE: The Farewell Tour”, but it will be postponed due to the new corona pandemic on the way. In 2022 he successfully completed. He seems to have retired, but he decided to return to tour, driven by the thought, “Why am I sitting at home when I can still play?” He started the ongoing “NEVER SAY NEVER Tour”. The National Harbor performance of this work is the 15th concert.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed version of such a stage, is a spectacular video with “super”. We usually refer to images without obstructions as “superb view”, but this work is really amazing. Looking at the opening scene that sets the viewpoint, you can see that you are shooting from the “stand seat on the right side of the stage”, but it is only the first minute and two seconds. When the point of view is fixed, the audience disappears completely, and the image of Frampton sitting on a chair spreads across the screen. If you exchange eye contact with the band on the way, the camera will also turn to you, but the expression of each person is clear. It’s a monopoly shot where only the stage occupies the field of view, so much so that it feels like a rehearsal without an audience (if there was no opening scene), rather than a shield.
What’s more, the voice is perfect for the scene. There is no doubt that it is an audience sound that sucks in the hall noise, but each sound is crisp and detailed, and the separate feeling is sufficient. There is a lot of applause between songs, but basically only the audience who listens silently falls into the illusion of monopolization like “live performance for myself”.

… and it looks like this. From HUMBLE PIE’s “Shine On” to SOUNDGARDEN’s cover “Black Hole Sun”, there is a wide range of originals and covers. It is a treasure chest of masterpieces that summarizes the career.
And Frampton who spells out such a set is wonderful! He suffers from “inclusion body myositis”, an intractable disease that gradually weakens his muscles, and there is a danger that he will lose strength and fall down while standing. Therefore, in the “NEVER SAY NEVER Tour”, the performance was sitting on a chair from beginning to end, but the fingertips crawling on the neck did not show any decline, and the singing voice was really relaxed with tension. Frampton himself says, “It’s not the same as before. I don’t have the strength in my hands.” Certainly, if you can play this much but retire just because you are “sitting”, you will lose the rock scene … it will fascinate you with a lively show that seems so.
In the modern age where the heroes of yesteryear have grown old, they are projecting their own views on life on stage and in music. And at the age of 73, Frampton, afflicted with an incurable disease, chose to return to the stage. When I write this, it seems that a tragic feeling is blurred, but this work is by no means such a sorrowful work. Rather, the flowing music is full of dynamism and the singing voice is full of joy. A piece that goes beyond the dimension of simply excellent music video and gives us the determination and vitality to live with music. By all means, it is the birth of a new masterpiece that I would like you to face.

これが現在までに公表されている2019年以降のスケジュール。2019年に難病を告白したフランプトンは、引退ツアー“FINALE: The Farewell Tour”を実施しますが、途中で新型コロナ・パンデミックもあって延期。2022年には無事に完遂しました。隠退生活に入ったようですが、「まだ演奏できるのに、なぜ僕は家で座っているんだ？」との想いに駆られてツアー復帰を決意。現在進行中の“NEVER SAY NEVER Tour”を開始しました。本作のナショナル・ハーバー公演は、その15公演目にあたるコンサートです。
そんなステージを真空パックした本作は、「超」の付く絶景映像。普段から遮蔽物のない映像を「絶景」と称していますが、本作は本当にスゴい。視点を定める開演シーンを見ると「ステージ右寄りのスタンド席」から撮影していると分かるのですが、それは最初の１分２秒だけ。視点が定まると観客の姿は一切消え、椅子に座ったフランプトンの姿が画面いっぱいに広がる。途中でバンドをアイコンタクトを交わすとカメラもそちらを向きますが、その１人ひとりの表情までくっきり。遮蔽物どころか（冒頭シーンがなかったら）無観客のリハーサルなんじゃないかと思うほど、ステージだけが視界を占領する独り占めショットなのです。
しかも、音声までその光景にぴったり。ホール鳴りも吸い込んだオーディエンス・サウンドには違いないのですが、１音１音までくっきり細やかでセパレート感も十分。曲間には喝采も沸きますが、基本的に黙って聴き込む客層だけに「まるで自分のための生演奏」のような独り占めの錯覚に陥るのです。
そんな超絶景で描かれるのは、ステージに還ってきた決意が滲むフルショウ。まずはキャリアを俯瞰するセットから確認してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。HUMBLE PIE時代の「Shine On」からSOUNDGARDENのカバー「Black Hole Sun」に至るまで、オリジナルもカバーも実に幅広い。まさにキャリアを総括した名曲の宝箱です。
そして、そんなセットを綴るフランプトンが素晴らしい！　彼が患っている「封入体筋炎」は筋肉が徐々に弱っていく難病で、立ったままでは途中で力が抜けて倒れる危険性がある。そのため、“NEVER SAY NEVER Tour”では終始イスに座ったままでのパフォーマンスなのですが、ネックを這う指先には衰えは見えず、歌声は張りもあって実に伸びやか。フランプトン自身は「以前と同じでない。手に力がないからね」と語っていますが、出てくる音はそうは言ってない。確かに、これだけ演奏できるのに「座っている」という理由だけで引退していたらロック・シーンの損失……そう思える溌剌としたショウで魅せてくれるのです。
往年の英雄達が齢を重ねた現代、それぞれの人生観をステージや音楽に投影しています。そして、73歳で難病に冒されたフランプトンは、ステージに戻ることを選びました。こう書くと悲壮感が滲んでいそうですが、本作は決してそんな悲痛な作品ではありません。むしろ、流れる音楽は躍動感に溢れ、歌声は喜びに満ちているのです。単に優れた音楽映像という次元を超え、見ている私たちにまで音楽と生きていく決意と活力をくれる１枚。ぜひ、正対していただきたい新名作の誕生です。
