One of the signs of Paul’s enthusiasm for the release of the new album “EGYPT STATION” which became a big hit, it will be a series of secret gigs made in the summer. After the release of the album, the schedule of the fresh up-tour was also decided, and there was also a feeling that as a pole, I wanted to warm up with a gig before the start. Among a series of gigs, the secret gig at the Abbey Road Studio in July which was held early is now being distributed as “UNDER THE STAIRCASE”. Clearness itself, the audio of the video was superior, and the difference is obvious. Those who thought that it was such a thing after listening to the gift should have pulled down.

Also, already distributed videos are already split up by songs by songs and uploaded to YouTube, but realized recording with another quality of quality through a new DVD that is not a diversion from there. The YouTube version that is currently seen has many unnatural movements, and the sound is also rigid and thin. In that respect, this release has a different dimensionality, and it is clear enough to actually watch without stress even on a large screen. If you look at this image quality, it is still a strong member of a youthful impression, but Brian Rei appears as a feeling that it got older than ever.
Besides, unlike the sound version which was originally released as a short content, here also contains a lot of pole MCs in between songs. 大ヒットとなったニューアルバム「EGYPT STATION」のリリースに対するポールの意気込みの表れの一つ、それが夏に行われた一連のシークレット・ギグでしょう。アルバムリリース後はフレッシュン・アップ・ツアーのスケジュールも決まっており、ポールとしては開始前にギグでウォーミングアップをやっておきたかったという思いもありました。一連のギグの中でも初期に行われた7月のアビーロード・スタジオでのシークレット・ギグが現在は「UNDER THE STAIRCASE」として配信されています。それは先週ギフト化された訳ですが、音声の方が1時間にも満たない内容だったのに対し、映像の方はギグ全体を捉えた二時間を超えるボリュームで配信されていたのです。
ところが映像の方がわが国ではリリースされておらず、内容面と音質面の両方で劣る音声だけでしかギグの模様が垣間見られない。そのせいで先週のギフト扱いとなってしまった訳ですが、今回は映像版をデュアル・レイヤーDVD-Rに収録してみせただけでなく、音声をリマスターして二枚のCD-Rにも収録。中でも音声の方はイコライズを施した結果、先週のギフト版にあったひと昔の配信チックな音質とはまったく別次元のステレオ・サウンドボード録音に生まれ変わったのです。クリアネス自体、映像の音声の方が秀でていたこともあり違いは歴然。ギフトを聞いてあんなもんかと思っていた方は腰を抜かしてしまうはず。

また配信映像の方も既にマニアが曲単位で分割してYouTubeにアップしてくれていますが、そこからの流用ではない新たなDVD化によって、これまた別次元のクオリティでの収録を実現。現在見られるYouTube版は動きが不自然な個所が多々見られますし、音声も硬質で薄っぺらい。その点において今回のリリースは別次元のクオリティとなっており、実際に大画面でもストレスなく鑑賞できるほどのクリアーさ。この画質で観てみれば、今も若々しい印象の強いバンドメンバーですが、ブライアン・レイは意外と老けてきた感じに映ります。
それに元々ショート・コンテンツとしてリリースされた音声版と違い、こちらでは曲間におけるポールのMCもふんだんに収録。アビーロード・スタジオで開催したこともあり、おなじみなエピソードばかりではありますが、ビートルズの楽曲の録音時のエピソードの数々が語られます。この点も通常のライブとは違ったギグならではの魅力かと。「Lady Madonna」ではいつものサイケデリック・ピアノではなく、ポールが当時のレコーディングに使用したピアノに移って演奏して見せるのも同スタジオで行えばこそのレアな場面。しかもギグが「Helter Skelter」で締めくくられるというのが面白い。

そして何より収録曲が増量された点が大きな魅力。おかげで曲をストーンズにあげたエピソードを交えて演奏される「I Wanna Be Your Man」などはもちろんですが、それ以上にニューアルバム収録曲であり、なおかつ今のところフレッシュン・アップ・ツアー本編では演奏されていない「Confidante」が最大の聞きものでしょう。しかも完璧なステレオ・サウンドボード録音で見聞き出来てしまうのです。リード・シングルだった「Come On To Me」のような曲と違い、今回のアルバム全体は意外と落ち着いた雰囲気の曲が多い。「Confidante」などはその最たる例であり、佳曲ながらライブ向きとは言えないかもしれない。もしかしたら「NEW」の時の「On My Way To Work」のようにサウンドチェック向けレパートリーの扱いとなる予感がします。
このように音質面と内容面からプレス盤扱いにしてもいいほどのアッパー版が登場してくれたのですが、惜しいことにアンコールで演奏された「Get Back」一曲が未収録であったことからCD-R＆DVD-Rでのリリースと相成りました。しかしながら今週同時のリリースというタイミングとなったグランド・セントラル駅でのギグとはまったく違った内容のステージであり、その見比べが大いに楽しめることでしょう。ツアー開始前のシークレット・ギグが二種類もプロショットで楽しめるだなんて！
