Ozzy Osbourne of 2017 who ended BLACK SABBATH and nominated his ally Zakk Wylde as a partner of the Fairwell Tour. A new excavation is a live album where you can experience the first day of the reunion.
What is imbued with such a work is “July 14, 2017 Oshkosh performance”. This is the best audience recording when I appeared in “Rock U.S.A. Festival”. Speaking of Ozzy in recent years, “ORDINARY MAN” has been released, and further new works (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Tony Iommi also participated) are being produced. This is the schedule that has been published so far. With the end of “THE END Tour” in 2017, Sabas was sealed and his solo activities resumed. The following year, 2018, we started “NO MORE TOURS II”, but the tour was suspended in the fall due to an infectious disease caused by a small wound on the hand. After that, the postponement was announced over and over again due to complications of influenza, falls at home (old wounds worsened), new corona pandemic, etc., and finally the US tour was canceled. Currently, the latest return schedule is the coupling tour “Europe # 2” with JUDAS PRIEST. If this is realized, it will be the first time in three years to return to the stage.
In this turbulent atmosphere, the “Rock U.S.A. Festival” of this work is the first day of “North America # 1”. It’s the first stage of Zack’s return. This work recorded at such a show is a new sound source released very recently, but anyway, it is powerful and full of direct feeling. Even if you listen with headphones, you can not feel the sound that makes the details cloudy, and there is no sense of distance, and even the finest parts are super vivid. That should be it, “Rock U.S.A. Festival” is a festival held on a special stage set up in a vast open space. It feels like Wacken or Donington, and it’s natural that there are no walls or ceilings from the beginning, and there is no response. Of course, if you are far from PA, the sound will be blurred, but there is no worry about this work. Perhaps it is recording straight toward the PA tower set up at the venue. The enthusiasm is far away, and the thick playing sound dominates everything.
However, it is not perfect. When the first song “Bark at the Moon” starts, the sound is distorted with too much power at the beginning, and the hitting peak of the bass drum is also afraid. I was wondering if the taper had failed, but apparently this was due to the on-site PA. Even though it doesn’t seem to be readjusted on the taper side, it turns into a refreshing sound in about 1 minute. As a matter of fact, the situation is strange even before the performance starts. It’s not stable from the opening “Carmina Burana”, and when Ozzy calls out, he hurries to turn it off and back. It’s only the first day after a long time, and you can really see how the rehearsal isn’t going well.
Of course, such Gudaguda is only for the first minute of “Bark at the Moon”. After that, a full show that summarizes the career with a thick sound explodes. However, it is also a bit different from “NO MORE TOURS II”. Here, let’s organize the set while comparing it with the main part of the tour.

The sense of balance that symbolizes the career in the three major boards “PARANOID”, “BLIZZARD OF OZZ”, and “NO MORE TEARS” is familiar to “NO MORE TOURS II”, but Zack became a hot topic in the famous song “Road To Nowhere” and the famous song compression medley. It is a prototype without solo time. Instead, “Believer” and “Desire”, which are not played in the main part of the tour, are selected, but both are revived only once. In particular, “Desire” is the rare number for the first time in 19 years.
“NO MORE TOURS II” will be resumed in January next year. Zack, who didn’t participate in “ORDINARY MAN”, seems to be playing the guitar in the upcoming new work, and I’m sure his uncle will play it wildly. It’s almost time for the 73-year-old Ozzy, who has gone through an unprecedented blank, to return. One work that is perfect for the present, waiting in endless worries. BLACK SABBATHを終結させ、フェアウェル・ツアーの相棒に盟友ザック・ワイルドを指名した2017年のオジー・オズボーン。その再会初日を極上体験できるライヴアルバムが新発掘です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2017年７月14日オシュコシュ公演」。“Rock U.S.A. Festival”に出演した際の極上オーディエンス録音です。近年のオジーと言えば『ORDINARY MAN』をリリースし、更なる新作（エリック・クラプトンやジェフ・ベック、トニー・アイオミも参加）も制作中。入ってくるニュースからは順風満帆のようにも見えますが、実はライヴ事情はかなりお寒い。フェアウェル・ツアー“NO MORE TOURS II”が中断したまま、延期に次ぐ延期なのです。その辺の事情を把握する意味でも、ザック復帰以降の歩みを振り返ってみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されているスケジュール。2017年の“THE END Tour”終了をもってサバスは封印され、ソロ活動を再開。翌2018年から“NO MORE TOURS II”を開始したわけですが、秋には手の小さな傷から起きた感染症のためにツアーは中断。その後はインフルエンザの合併症やら自宅での転倒（古傷が悪化）やら新型コロナ・パンデミックやら……で何度も何度も延期が発表され、遂には全米ツアーの中止に追い込まれました。現在のところ、最新の復帰予定はJUDAS PRIESTとのカップリング・ツアー「欧州#2」。もし、これが実現すれば実に３年ぶりというステージ復帰になるのです。
この波瀾万丈な中で、本作の“Rock U.S.A. Festival”は「北米#1」の初日。ザックが復帰しての最初のステージなのです。そんなショウで記録された本作はごく最近になって公開された新音源なのですが、とにかくパワフルでダイレクト感たっぷり。ヘッドフォンで聴いてもディテールを曇らせる鳴りが感じられず、距離感もまるでなしに微細部まで超ビビッド。それもそのはず、“Rock U.S.A. Festival”は広大な広場に立てられた特設ステージで行われるフェスティバル。ヴァッケンやドニントンのような感じでして、最初から壁も天井もなく、反響ゼロなのも当然。もちろん、ＰＡから遠ければ音もボケてしまうわけですが、本作にその心配はなし。恐らくは会場に立てられたＰＡ塔に向かって真っ直ぐに録っているのでしょう。熱狂も遙か遠く、極太の演奏音がすべてを支配しているのです。
ただし、完璧ではない。１曲目の「Bark at the Moon」か始まると冒頭はあまりのパワフルさに音が歪んでおり、バスドラの打音ピークもビビッているのです。テーパーの失敗か……と思いつつ、どうやらこれは現場ＰＡが原因。テーパー側で再調整している様子もないのに、１分ほどでスッキリ・サウンドに化けるのです。実のところ、開演前から様子がおかしい。オープニングの「Carmina Burana」からして安定していませんし、オジーがかけ声を入れると急いで消したり、戻したり。久々の初日だけあって、リハーサルが上手く行っていない様子がリアルに分かるのです。
もちろん、そんなグダグダは「Bark at the Moon」最初の１分間だけ。その後は極太サウンドでキャリアを総括するフルショウが炸裂します。ただし、“NO MORE TOURS II”とはまたひと味違ってもいる。ここではツアー本編と比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。３大名盤『PARANOID』『BLIZZARD OF OZZ』『NO MORE TEARS』にキャリアを象徴させるバランス感覚は“NO MORE TOURS II”に通じつつ、名曲「Road To Nowhere」や名曲圧縮メドレーで話題になったザックのソロタイムがないプロトタイプです。代わりにツアー本編では演奏していない「Believer」「Desire」がセレクトされているわけですが、両方とも１回限りの復活。特に「Desire」は19年ぶりというレア・ナンバーなのです。
来年１月には再開されるであろう“NO MORE TOURS II”。『ORDINARY MAN』には不参加だったザックも、来る新作ではギターを弾いているそうですし、きっと叔父の側らでワイルドに弾き倒してくれることでしょう。かつてないブランクを経た73才のオジーが戻ってくるまで、あと少し。尽きぬ心配の中で待ちわびる現在にピッタリの１作。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。

★ザック・ワイルドが正式復帰した初日「2017年７月14日ROCK USA フェスティバル」の極上オーディエンス録音。ごく最近になって公開された新音源なのですが、とにかくパワフルでダイレクト感たっぷり。野外の特設ステージだけに壁も天井もなく、ＰＡから吐き出される出音を反響ゼロでダイレクトに拾っている。冒頭「Bark at the Moon」最初の１分だけ現場の出音が乱れますが、それ以降はまさに極上。NO MORE TOURS II本編では聴けなかったレアな「Believer」「Desire」も美味しい初日ョウをフル体験できます。
