Neil Young’s long-standing Bridge School Benefits with his wife Pegi at the time. This event was epoch-making because it was held every time on the premise of an acoustic concert before the word “unplugged” became popular, and thanks to that, the performing artists will perform rare acoustic performances. It’s a nostalgic place to behave.
The event started in 1986, but in the first 10 years of the event, rare performances were held every year so that it could be said to be vintage. Among them, the stage that Neil himself unfolded was a hot topic every time, and it was 1990 that was very popular among enthusiasts.
After all, Neil of the year was epoch-making in that he led Crazy Horse to the stage of the bridge for the first time, and even Crazy Horse who always had an electric sound lived in a completely acoustic style. This was the first time I showed off.
In addition, the masterpiece “RAGGED GLORY” was completed, and a few weeks after this bridge, it was sunny as “WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET” and refrained from the gig at Santa Cruz released this year. ..
The contents of such a historic acoustic stage are plentiful. First, “Lotta Love” was performed at the opening of the event, and then the stage that was shown at Tori was an on-parade of the majestic Crazy Horse Classic. The songs included in “RAGGED GLORY”, which was a new song at that time, are now part of history. It was only at this time that he performed “Mansion On The Hill” and the classic “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” in an acoustic and full band formation.
Furthermore, it was a rare scene that this day was the last to play the famous song “Helpless” with the same key as the album version. And the fact that Elvis Costello, who finished his own stage, joined in “Down By The River” has been a hot topic since then.
It was a rare 1990 bridge appearance, but there was a track record of official releases such as “Love And Only Love” and “Down By The River” in a compilation that summarizes the performances of the event. However, the release form is distribution only. Above all, the whole picture of Neil & Horse’s ultra-rare acoustic stage is unbelievable. On the contrary, it was a legend in the history of the bridge that even audience recordings did not spread among traders.
The audience master of such a phantom time was finally excavated this year. The record of the bridge stage, which was rarely seen as a modern sound source in 1990, has finally come to light.
As I wrote so far, the content alone was a stage of tears of Neil Mania all over the world, but the sound quality is really wonderful. I can’t help but be surprised at the on-sound image that makes you want to describe it as a “sound board” even though it is a sound source that captures an acoustic show where the sound output tends to be modest. Isn’t it appropriate to release it on a limited press CD? The best audience that you can think of.
However, the problem that the pitch is high from the stage of the sound source and master this time is a problem. Therefore, when releasing from the UXBRIDGE label, we carefully adjusted this problem. Although it is released on CD-R, there is no omission. The legendary acoustic stage led by Crazy Horse as a prelude to the official “WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET” has finally been released with the highest quality audience recording!
ニール・ヤングが当時の妻ペギと共に長年に渡って開催していたブリッジ・スクール・ベネフィット。このイベントが画期的だったのは「アンプラグド」という言葉が流行る前からアコースティック編成のライブを前提として毎回行われており、おかげで出演アーティストとがレアなアコースティック・パフォーマンスを繰り広げるという事から話題を振りまいていたのも懐かしいところ。
1986年からスタートしたイベントですが、その最初の10年など、もはやビンテージと言えるほど毎年レアな演奏が繰り広げられていたものです。中でも主催のニール自身が繰り広げたステージは毎回が話題を呼んでおり、マニアの間で高い人気を誇っていたのが1990年。
何と言ってもこの年のニールは初めてクレイジー・ホースを率いてブリッジのステージに上がったとう点が画期的で、常にエレクトリックなサウンドを身上としていたクレイジー・ホースにしても完全アコースティックなスタイルでライブを披露したのはこの時が初めてだったのです。
おまけに名作「RAGGED GLORY」を完成させ、このブリッジの数週間後には「WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET」として晴れて今年リリースされたサンタ・クルスでのギグを控えるという、正に絶頂にあったタイミング。
そんな歴史的なアコースティック・ステージは内容も貴重さたっぷり。まずイベントのオープニングにて「Lotta Love」を演奏、その後トリで披露されたステージは堂々たるクレイジー・ホース・クラシックのオンパレード。当時は新曲だった「RAGGED GLORY」収録曲も今や歴史の一部。そんな中でも「Mansion On The Hill」やクラシック「Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere」をアコースティックかつフルバンドというフォーメーションで演奏してみせたのはこの時だけ。
さらに名曲「Helpless」をアルバムバージョンと同じキーで演奏してくれたのも何気にこの日が最後というレアな場面。そして自身のステージを終えたエルヴィス・コステロが「Down By The River」で加わった事は当時から話題を呼びました。
このようにレア度満点な1990年のブリッジ出演だった訳ですが、同イベント歴代パフォーマンスをまとめたコンピレーションにて「Love And Only Love」や「Down By The River」などがオフィシャルリリースされた実績があったものの、どれもリリース形態が配信オンリー。何よりニール＆ホースの超レアなアコースティック・ステージの全貌は日の目を見ずじまい。それどころかオーディエンス録音すらトレーダー間に広まらないという、ブリッジの歴史においても伝説の回とされていたほどだったのです。
そんな幻の回のオーディエンス・マスターが今年に入って遂に出土。1990年という近代の音源としては稀に見るほどレアな存在だったブリッジのステージの記録がようやくお目見えしてくれました。
ここまで書いてきたように、内容だけでも世界中のニール・マニア感涙のステージだった訳ですが、その音質が実に素晴らしい。出音が控えめになりがちなアコースティック・ショーを捉えた音源でありながら「まるでサウンドボード」と形容したくなるようなオンな音像には驚きを禁じえません。本来であれば限定プレスCDでのリリースが相応しいのでは？と思えるほどの極上オーディエンス。
ところが今回の音源、マスターの段階からピッチが高いという問題が玉に瑕。そこでUXBRIDGEレーベルからのリリースに際し、この問題を丁寧にアジャスト。CD-Rでのリリースながら抜かりはありません。オフィシャル「WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET」の前哨戦としてクレイジー・ホースを率いて行われた伝説のアコースティック・ステージが最高音質のオーディエンス録音にて遂にリリース！
