Following “HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1980” and “OSAKA 1981 AFTERNOON SHOW / EVENING SHOW”, the latest series of superb soundboard archives. A press CD that permanently preserves the famous sound source that symbolizes the “Apocalypse” era is now available.
The engraving on this work is “August 29, 1982 Reading Festival Performance”. Yes, “Surprise, Surprise!” By Gary Barden is also an iconic stereo soundboard recording. Speaking of “ASSAULT ATTACK Tour”, it is known as the shortest in the early MSG, but the cause is the disappearance of the legendary Graham Bonnet. これが『ASSAULT ATTACK』にまつわる活動概要。初期MSGは資料によって日付もあやふやだったり矛盾があったりと不確実なのですが、おおよその流れとスケール感はご理解いただけると思います。『黙示録』を完成させた彼らは大舞台レディング・フェスから大々的にツアーを開始しようと画策しますが、そのウォームアップ・ギグでまさかのグラハム失踪（グラハム本人による陳列罪的なエピソードも強烈ですが、その一方でクリス・グレンは「彼はパニックを起こしただけで、そんな事はしてなかった」とも語っています）。その後のゲイリー復帰は証言によってタイミングが異なるものの、最新のリサーチでは３日後には合流してリハを開始。５日後のレディング本番になんとか間に合わせた……という離れ業だったようです。そして、レディング本番ではグラハム登場を期待した観客の前にゲイリーが立ち、例の「サプライズ！」からスタートしたことで伝説となりました。
ともあれ、そんなステージは有名フェスだけあってサウンドボードでも収録。ラジオ放送等で当時から大定番となってきたわけです。そして、本作はその中でも最長・最高峰と言われるマスター。FM放送のエアチェック物はサウンドに難がありましたし、90年代に『BBC RADIO ONE LIVE IN CONCERT』として公式化された際にも曲がカットされるなど、有名なわりに決定盤に恵まれませんでした。本作は、そんな欠点のないパーフェクト・サウンドボード。「Feels Like a Good Thing」も収録した全長は62分に及び、サウンドも鉄板・鉄壁。実のところ、2000年代にはオフィシャルBOXに完全版マスターが収録されたこともありましたが、それにもまったく負けていない完全無欠版なのです。
クオリティ面では「オフィシャル名盤級」「究極板」以外に表現のしようがないわけですが、そのサウンドで描かれるショウの特別感も強烈。“ASSAULT ATTACK Tour”の最高峰と言えば、日本公演サウンドボード『GOD RETURNS DEFINITIVE MASTER（Langley Deluxe 015）』が君臨しておりますので、比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。新曲は「Heavy Blues」と紹介される「Rock You to the Ground」だけで、後はクラシックス。ツアー本編では演奏されなかった「Feels Like a Good Thing」「But I Want More」も披露されています。また、この２曲は後の『ROCK WILL NEVER DIE』でも聴けないレパートリーであり、テッド・マッケンナが叩くサウンドボードテイクは、本作が唯一無二だったりもするのです。
また、そんなセット以上に聴きどころなのが当時の状況が透ける演奏そのもの。ゲイリーの「Rock You to the Ground」はかなり厳しい感じですし、マイケルも「Cry For The Nations」のソロ出だしてつまずいてしまう。各所から突貫ラインナップでの無理が見え隠れするのです。さらにMC。冒頭の伝説コール「サプライズ！」もありますが、「Cry for the Nations」の後ではしっかり「今夜グラハムは来ないよ」「シンガーのゲイリー・バーデンだ」と紹介もしているのです。
