This work is a compilation of the studio recordings left by METALLICA during the Mustaine era with the highest quality in history. First, let’s take a bird’s-eye view of the four studio recordings engraved in this work.

All 17 songs above. There are other early METALLICA demos, but most of them are “garage recordings”. It was recorded in the garage of the bassist Ron McGoverney’s house at the time, not in the studio. The above is a “studio recording” that sets it apart from them, and that’s all. Let’s introduce each one individually.
● Cassette before editing “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” (7 songs)
The first thing that appeared was “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”, which was said to be the “world’s most famous demo”. Moreover, it is not the version that spread the name of METALLICA all over the world at that time (hereinafter referred to as “regular version” in this paper), but the original version before editing. It has been digitized from the tape that McGavani had treasured, and the counts and conversational voices that were cut in the regular version are also recorded, and the song order is the same as the recording order. The whole legendary session is revived.
And the sound is more shocking than the length. In fact, this legendary session was recorded simultaneously on two recorders, one of the original masters in the hands of Lars Ulrich and the other in the hands of McGavani. Among them, the master of the Lars system became the regular version and spread all over the world. It is also called “4th Gene Copy”. On the other hand, the basis of this work is the McGavani system master as mentioned above. It is said to be the “1st-2nd Gene” that has not undergone editing work, and is much younger than the regular version. Moreover, this work is the highest peak version of the original master. It is a powerful version that has been honed by meticulous mastering and approaches the power with the last-minute lines that do not cause distortion or deterioration.
And the content is exactly “true debut work”. In the first place, “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” is generally considered to be a “demo”, but it was originally made to be the debut EP. It was produced with the investment of the owner (Kenny Kane) of the punk label “HIGH VELOCITY”, but when Kenny listened to the completed recording, he realized that METALLICA was not a punk band (it’s a stupid story, but That’s why METALLICA at that time was an unprecedented and innovative sound). And the debut story disappeared, and as a result it became widespread as a demo. In other words, since this session was made with the intention of making a record debut, of course, all the songs have been arranged, and since they have already played live, they are more comfortable than ordinary studio albums. Moreover, since the young spirit of “I’m going to hit the world with this !!” is stubborn in the performance, it is no longer at the level that can be said by words such as “demo”.
● Upgrade Master (2 songs) of “MEGAFORCE DEMO”
Following are two songs “Whiplash” and “No Remorse” from the famous legendary demo “MEGAFORCE DEMO”. The biggest point is that it is a one-of-a-kind studio recording in which the two major charisma “Mustaine & Cliff Burton” co-starred. Recorded on the Bay Area’s local radio station “KUSF” to showcase the new organization Cliff has joined to the labels. This is not a handmade recording of the garage, but a professional recording.
I am using the highest peak update master newly excavated in 2020, but its sound barrel and other titles are incomparable. The other title “MEGAFORCE DEMO” was covered with noise by default, and the superiority or inferiority was decided by how to master it neatly. However, this new master has “no noise”. You may not be able to expect the luster of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” as expected, but the genius Mustaine & version’s super valuable co-starring will be revived with a smooth sound that does not have the feeling of chilliness and stiffness that was destined until now!
Also, with the addition of these two songs to “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”, all “KILL EM’ALL” songs (other than bass solo) will be available. In other words, this work is the true originator: Dave Mustaine’s version of “KILL EM’ALL” itself.
● 2015 official reissue version of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” (7 songs)
“NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” will appear again in the second half. Another version. The one recorded at the beginning was the McGavani system master, but this is the regular version born from the Lars system master. However, it is not the one in 1982, but the officially reissued version for “Record Store Day” in 2015. Initially, the cassette version was reissued on “Record Store Day”, and then the CD version was planned to be released to the general public, but after that, the story of the CD version release disappeared (Musaine’s song credits are desired by Lars). , It seems that Mustaine refused it, so it failed). As a result, only the cassette version saw the light of day.
However, this cassette version was also a difficult problem. In the first place, it sold out in a blink of an eye as a souvenir. It quickly became an extremely rare item. What is recorded here is the “2015 reissue cassette version”. Although it is a regular version with the count etc. deleted, its sound is the highest peak ever. Speaking of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”, the original release version of 1982 was difficult to obtain, and even if it was available, there were many wakame seaweeds that were repeatedly played. Under such circumstances, this work uses the Omoto master owned by Lars himself, and is also given official similar digital mastering. Although it is different from the “original master” at the beginning, it is the ultimate version that looks like an official work.
● Official reissue version of the earliest “Hit The Lights” (1 song)
The last recorded is “Hit The Lights” provided for the first press of the compilation board “METAL MASSACRE”. A song written by James Hetfield during the LEATHER CHARM era, it is a genuine “METALLICA oldest recording” recorded when the band was not yet completed. Since James was dissatisfied with the result, it was replaced with the “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER” take after the second press (even on the reprint CD of the 90’s), but the 1st press board is a phantom where you can hear the solo of black guitarist Lloyd Grant. Official take. This work is not a common analog wakeup, but a lossless recording of the official CD take realized in the METAL BLADE label 20th anniversary box (of course out of print).
As mentioned above, it is the ultimate studio album of the Dave Mustaine era, which covers all 17 takes. 以上の全17曲。初期METALLICAのデモは他にもありますが、そのほとんどが「ガレージ録音」。スタジオではなく、当時のベーシストだったロン・マクガヴァニー宅のガレージで記録されたものでした。上記は、それらと一線を画す「スタジオ録音」であり、これで全部です。それでは、それぞれ個別にご紹介していきましょう。
●『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』の編集前カセット（７曲）
まず最初に登場するのは「世界一有名なデモ」と言われた『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』。しかも、当時METALLICAの名を世界中に広めたバージョン（以後、本稿では「正規版」とします）ではなく、その編集前のオリジナル・バージョンです。マクガヴァニーが秘蔵していたテープからデジタル化されており、正規版ではカットされていたカウントや会話声も収録され、曲順も録音順そのまま。伝説のセッションが丸ごと甦るのです。
そして、長さ以上に衝撃なのがサウンド。実のところ、この伝説セッションは２台のレコーダーで同時に録音されており、大元マスターの１本はラーズ・ウルリッヒ、もう１本はマクガヴァニーの手に残りました。そのうち、正規版となって世界中に広まったのはラーズ系統のマスター。それも「4thジェネ・コピー」と言われています。それに対して本作の元になっているのは先述の通りマクガヴァニー系統マスター。編集作業などを経ていない「1st-2ndジェネ」とされ、正規版よりグッと若いのです。しかも、本作はオリジナル・マスターの最高峰版。細心マスタリングで磨き込まれており、あくまでも歪みや劣化が起きないギリギリの線でド迫力に迫るパワフル・バージョンなのです。
そして、その内容はまさに「真のデビュー作」。そもそも『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』は一般的に「デモ」と思われていますが、本来はデビューEPとなるべく作られたもの。パンクレーベル「HIGH VELOCITY」のオーナー（ケニー・ケイン）が出資して制作されたのですが、出来上がった録音を聴いたケニーは、METALLICAがパンクバンドではないと気づいた（アホみたいな話ですが、それほど当時のMETALLICAが前例のない革新的なサウンドだったわけです）。そして、デビュー話は立ち消え、結果デモとして広まることになった。つまり、このセッションはレコードデビューのつもりで作っていますから、当然、全曲アレンジも完成されており、すでにライヴを重ねているだけに普通のスタジオアルバムよりもこなれているほど。しかも演奏には「これで世界に打って出てやる!!」という若い気合いがギュウづめなのですから、もはや「デモ」などという言葉で語られるレベルではないのです。
●『MEGAFORCE DEMO』のアップグレード・マスター（２曲）
続くのは、これまた有名な伝説デモ『MEGAFORCE DEMO』の２曲「Whiplash」「No Remorse」。最大のポイントは、２大カリスマ「ムステイン＆クリフ・バートン」が共演した唯一無二のスタジオ録音であること。クリフが加入した新編成をレーベル各社にお披露目するため、ベイエリアの地元ラジオ局「KUSF」で録音されたもの。こちらもガレージの手作り録音ではなく、れっきとしたプロ収録です。
2020年に新発掘された最高峰更新マスターを使用しているのですが、そのサウンドたるや他タイトルとは比べものにならない。他タイトルの『MEGAFORCE DEMO』はノイズまみれがデフォで、それをいかに綺麗にマスタリングするかが優劣を決めていました。ところが、今回の新マスターはそのノイズが「ない」。さすがに『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』ほどの艶は望めないかもしれませんが、今まで宿命だったチリチリ感もゴワゴワ感もない滑らかサウンドで、天才ムステイン＆バージョンの超貴重共演が甦るのです！
また、『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』にこの２曲が加わったことで（ベースソロ以外の）『KILL EM’ ALL』全曲が揃う。つまり、本作こそが真のオリジネイター：デイヴ・ムステイン版の『KILL EM’ ALL』そのものなのです。
●『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』の2015年オフィシャル再発版（７曲）
後半に登場するのは、再び『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』。その別バージョンです。冒頭に収録したのはマクガヴァニー系統マスターでしたが、こちらはラーズ系統マスターから生まれた正規版。ただし、1982年当時のものではなく、2015年の“レコードストア・デイ”のためにオフィシャルが正式再発したバージョンなのです。当初は“レコードストア・デイ”でカセット版が再発され、その後にCD盤が一般発売するという計画だったのですが、その後にCD盤リリースの話は立ち消え（ムステインの楽曲クレジットをラーズが欲しがり、それをムステインが断ったために頓挫したそう）。結果、カセット版だけが日の目を見たのです。
ところが、このカセット版も難問でした。そもそも記念品としてあっと言う間に完売。早々に激レア・アイテムと化してしまいました。ここに収録されているのは 、その「2015年再発カセット版」。カウントなどが削除された正規版ではあるものの、そのサウンドは過去最高峰。『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』と言えば、1982年のオリジナル・リリース版は入手困難でしたし、もし入手できても再生を繰り返したワカメなものも多かった。そんな中で、本作はラーズ本人が所有する大元マスターが使用されており、さらに公式似デジタル・マスタリングも施されている。冒頭の「オリジナル・マスター」とは違いながらも、公式作品然とした究極バージョンなのです。
●最初期「Hit The Lights」のオフィシャル再発版（１曲）
最後に収録されているのは、コンピレーション盤『METAL MASSACRE』の初回プレスに提供された「Hit The Lights」。ジェイムズ・ヘットフィールドがLEATHER CHARM時代に書いた曲で、まだバンドが完成していない時点に録音された、正真正銘「METALLICA最古の録音」です。ジェイムズが出来に不満だったため、セカンドプレス以降（90年代の復刻CDでも）では『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』テイクに差し替えられましたが、1stプレス盤は黒人ギタリスト・ロイド・グラントのソロが聴ける幻のオフィシャル・テイク。本作はよくあるアナログ起こしではなく、METAL BLADEレーベル20周年ボックス（もちろん廃盤）で実現したオフィシャルCD化テイクをロスレスで収録しています。

The main press CD is a collection of the studio recordings of METALLICA during the Dave Mustaine era with the highest quality. It is truly the greatest masterpiece in heavy metal history. As mentioned in the commentary, although the early METALLICA demos are strictly divided into “studio recording” and “garage recording”, they are generally treated together. Therefore, the main press CD that summarizes “studio recording” also comes with a bonus of this work that summarizes “garage recording”. You can collect the initial demo at once.

● Legendary demo “POWER METAL” (4 songs)
Up to this point, it was recorded in March 1982, but the following four songs were recorded in April and are demos known as “POWER METAL”. The guitar solo still feels groping, but James picks up the guitar again and improves like a different person in just one month. This super-fast growth will accelerate further through live activities, and three months later, in July 1982, it will bear fruit in the historic “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”.
● Bonus: Soundboard Live (1 song)
The bonus recorded at the end of DISC 1 is the live performance of “No Remorse” recorded on “Whiskey A Go Go on August 4, 1982”. Speaking of Mustaine era soundboard live, “October 18, 1982”, which is also sold at livemetallica.com, is famous, but other soundboards are only this one song.
This work is basically summarized in “McGavani’s garage recording”, but this track is the only exception. After all, there are still cases where a version of this track with cut cheers is distributed as a demo, and it is also introduced as “a part of the garage practice tape” above on English wikipedia. It is the longest version recorded here in the sense that it saves the trouble of searching as a collection. It is also this time’s increased take that I couldn’t listen to in the previous edition.
Moreover, the content is extremely deep. Since it is a tape owned by McGavani, it will be in the Mustaine era, but the riff is not limited to the songs recorded in “KILL’EM ALL”. “RIDE THE LIGHTNING”, “… AND JUSTICE FOR ALL”, “BLACK ALBUM”, and even “HARDWIRED … TO SELF-DESTRUCT” riffs have appeared. And what’s even more interesting is the large number of MEGADETH riffs. If you’re a fan of both bands, you’re all wondering which riff James devised and which riff was Mustaine’s souvenir. This tape is also an important proof of its elucidation (this work is divided into 26 tracks according to the research of overseas enthusiasts, but in reality more various riffs will appear. Some of them are still unused. There are some riffs that seem to be, and there are variations that are quite different from the final version).
Unlike the main press CD “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER: DEFINITIVE EDITION”, this garage recording sound is not for everyone. However, that’s why their roots and the situation at the time when they were amateurs are directly transmitted, and it is also real that each take improves, the song is devised, and the sound improves. 「Ｂ：スタジオ・デモ」は、本編プレスCD『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER: DEFINITIVE EDITION』に総てがまとめられ、「Ｃ：ライヴ・デモ」はギフト・タイトルの『LIVE METAL UP YOUR ASS』１本でOK。残る「Ａ：ガレージ・デモ」を総ざらいしたのが本作のコンセプトなのです。METALLICAの初期デモは古くから無数のタイトルが存在してきましたが、そのベスト・マスタ集だったのが前回の『McGOVNEY’S GARAGE 1982』。本作は、１枚物だった前回盤から一気に37分以上も増量。1982年から40周年を記念するのに相応しい決定盤へと進化した２枚組なのです。そして、その内容は大きく５つに分けられる。早速、個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【DISC 1：ガレージ・デモ＋１（約63分）】
●初ライヴに向けたオーディション・テープ（２曲）

この頃のMETALLICAは、マクガヴァニーのガレージで練習を重ねながら自分たちの個性を模索していきます。続いて登場するのは、そのリハーサル・練習風景を捉えたデモ。DIAMOND HEADのカバーや最初のオリジナル「Hit The Lights」「Jump In The Fire」も非常に初々しいバージョンで、まだまだ夜明け前。ジェイムズはヴォーカルに専念し、ギターは総てムステインです。楽器自体に慣れていく成長過程がたっぷり楽しめます。
●伝説デモ『POWER METAL』（４曲）
ここまでは1982年３月の録音ですが、続く４曲は４月録音で通称「POWER METAL」として知られるデモ。まだギターソロに手探り感が残りますが、ジェイムズが再びギターを手にとっており、たった１ヶ月で別人のように上達。この超速な成長はライヴ活動を経てさらに加速し、３ヶ月後の1982年７月には歴史的な『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』へと結実するわけです。
●ボーナス：サウンドボード・ライヴ（１曲）
DISC 1の最後にボーナス収録されているのは「1982年８月４日Whiskey A Go Go」で録音されたNo Remorse」のライヴ。ムステイン時代のサウンドボード・ライヴと言えば、livemetallica.comでも販売されている「1982年10月18日」が有名ですが、それ以外のサウンドボードはこの１曲だけです。
本作は基本的に「マクガヴァニーのガレージ録音」でまとめられていますが、このトラックだけは唯一の例外。と言うのも、このトラックは歓声をカットしたバージョンがデモとして流通するケースがままあり、英語wikipediaでも上記「ガレージ練習テープの一部」として紹介されている。コレクションとして探される手間を省く意味でも最長版でここに収録致しました。また、前回盤では聴けなかった今回の増量テイクでもあります。
【DISC 2：作曲用のリフ・テープ（約50分）】
そんなボーナス・ライヴ以上に増量の要となっているのがDISC 2。作曲のためにメモ代わりにリフやフレーズが録音されたテープです。前回盤でも同種の録音が約17分収録されていましたが、その後にマクガヴァニー所有のテープが発掘。一気に50分以上に増量されたのです。
しかも、その内容は極めてディープ。マクガヴァニー所有のテープなのでムステイン時代となるわけですが、そのリフは『KILL ‘EM ALL』収録曲に留まらない。『RIDE THE LIGHTNING』や『…AND JUSTICE FOR ALL』『BLACK ALBUM』、果ては『HARDWIRED… TO SELF-DESTRUCT』のリフまで登場しているのです。そして、それ以上に興味深いのがMEGADETHのリフも大量に出てくること。両バンドのファンであれば、「どのリフをジェイムズが考案し、どのリフがムステインの置き土産だったのか」は誰もが気になるところ。このテープは、その解明の重要な証拠品でもあるわけです（なお、本作は海外マニアのリサーチに従って26トラックに分けていますが、本当はもっと多彩なリフが登場します。中にはまだ未使用と思われるリフもありますし、最終版とはかなり違った変奏もあります）。
本編プレスCDの『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER: DEFINITIVE EDITION』と違い、ガレージ録音の本作は、いかにもデモらしいサウンドが万人向けとは言えません。しかし、だからこそ彼らのルーツ、素人だった当時の様子がダイレクトに伝わり、１テイクごとに上達し、曲が練られ、音も良くなっていく様もリアル。バンド経験のある方なら、思い出とリンクしてより一層METALLICAに親しみが湧くのではないでしょうか。
こんなロマン溢れるのも（幾多のデモ・ブートとは違い）キチンと整理され、時系列で聴ける本作ならでは。本作→『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER: Definitive Edition』→『KILL ‘EM ALL』の順に聴けば、第一歩からデビューまでの歩みを伴走できる。その後、数々の革命を起こすMETALLICA、そして彼らを追撃することになるムステイン。音楽業界さえ変えてしまうヒーロー達の門出を、ぜひご自身の耳でお確かめください！
