DIO in 1999, who decided to return to fantasy but had not yet reached “MAGICA”. Introducing a new live album where you can experience the maniac “skimmer” era.
It is “November 16, 1999 Gothenburg performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is the excellent audience recording. Speaking of 1999, it was a turning point where Tracy G was replaced by Craig Goldy, but there were many other minor member changes. The members will be different even if there is a slight difference in time, so let’s first look back on the schedule at that time and check the position of the show.

This is the 1998/1999 DIO. Actually, there had been a lot of intense member changes before this, but for the time being, I returned to the same members as “INFERNO” once in early 1998, so I tried to sort out from there. Significant changes were the departure of Vinnie in May 1998 and the departure of Tracy in the spring of 1999. The other shift was of the type “take a person with a free schedule to the tour”, but the two never returned to DIO.
Anyway, Craig returned in June 1999 and Jimmy Bain returned in September. Departing for the tour with the “DREAM EVIL” team … At that point, Jimmy couldn’t tour outside the United States. The official members remained Jimmy and conducted a mini tour in Scandinavia with Chuck Garrick as a help (oh, confusing). The Gothenburg performance of this work is the final edition of such a turbulent 1999. It was the 6th performance of the “Scandinavian” leg.
This work recorded at such a show is a new recording that was recently excavated. In fact, it’s the much talked about “Barrhult” collection. Some of you may already be coming. Yes, on the same day and at the same venue as MOTORHEAD’s masterpiece “GOTHENBURG 1999 (Shades 1488)”, which was introduced last week and has been well received. It is a sister work recorded by the same person in quick succession. And the sound is very similar. It’s not as metallic as MOTORHEAD because of the sound output, but the neat sound and the strength of the core that penetrates the center are the same. Of course, you can fully enjoy the fresh sound with no distortion or twist from corner to corner, with no dubbing marks on the ultimate freshness caused by the Omoto cassette recorded by the history of “Barrhult”.
The natural and rich sound is drawn in the style of heavy metal that revived in the 1980s. It’s a short set because it’s a festival tour with 4 groups of MOTORHEAD, MANOWAR, and LION ’S SHARE, but rare songs are also interwoven in it, so let’s organize it here.

The former is the only remaining Tracy’s souvenir, and Craig will only play his songs later and earlier on this tour, “Evilution.” The biggest point is “I Speed ​​At Night”. It’s been played since the end of the Tracy era, but it’s definitely Craig who has met the sharply rushing songs. The phrasing, which is smoother than the originator Vivian, is sharp like a razor and has a really cool edge that cuts through a battle.
DIO, who remembered breathing with Craig on this tour, started his ambitious work “MAGICA”. I decided to aim for a fantasy return in earnest. これが1998年／1999年のDIO。実はこれ以前から激しいメンバーチェンジが繰り返されていたのですが、とりあえず1998年初めには一度『INFERNO』と同じメンバーに戻ったので、そこから整理してみました。重要な変化は1998年５月のヴィニー離脱と1999年春のトレイシー脱退。他の交代は「スケジュールの空いてる人間をツアーに連れて行く」というタイプのものでしたが、この２人は二度とDIOに戻ることはありませんでした。
ともあれ、1999年６月にはクレイグ、９月にはジミー・ベインが復帰。『DREAM EVIL』チームでツアーに出発……というところで、ジミーがアメリカ以外でツアー出来ないという事態が発生。正式メンバーはジミーのまま、チャック・ギャリックをヘルプに迎えて北欧でのミニ・ツアーを実施しました（はぁ、ややこしい）。本作のヨーテボリ公演は、そんな激動の1999年の最終盤。「北欧」レッグの６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、最近になって発掘された新録音。実は、今話題の「Barrhult」コレクションなのです。もうピンと来ている方もいらっしゃる事でしょう。そう、先週ご紹介して好評を賜っているMOTORHEADの傑作『GOTHENBURG 1999（Shades 1488）』と同日・同会場。同じ人物が続けざまに録音した姉妹作なのです。そして、サウンドも酷似している。出音の関係かMOTORHEADほど金属感丸出しではありませんが、端正な鳴りとそのド真ん中を貫く芯の力強さは同じ。もちろん、「Barrhult」史が録音した大元カセットから起こされた究極鮮度にダビング痕などあろうハズもなく、隅から隅まで歪みもヨレもない瑞々しいサウンドがたっぷりと味わえるのです。
そんなナチュラル＆リッチなサウンドで描かれるのは、80年代が甦ったような様式ヘヴィメタルの桃源郷。MOTORHEAD、MANOWAR、LION’S SHAREと４組で回るフェスツアーなためにショートセットではありますが、その中にもレア曲も織り交ぜられている、ここで整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。80年代の名曲をズラリと並べ、久々の「Rock ‘N’ Roll Children」「King Of Rock And Roll」も復活。その黄金のレパートリーの中で異彩を放っているのは「Evilution」と「I Speed At Night」でしょう。前者は唯一残されたトレイシーの置き土産であり、クレイグが彼の曲を弾くのは後にも先にもこのツアーの「Evilution」だけです。それ以上に最大のポイントなのが「I Speed At Night」。トレイシー時代の末期から演奏されるようになったのですが、シャープに疾駆する曲に会っているのは間違いなくクレイグの方。オリジネイターのヴィヴィアンよりさらに滑らかなフレージングはカミソリのように鋭利でスパッと一戦切り裂くようなエッジが実に格好いいのです。
このツアーでクレイグとの呼吸を思い出したDIOは、意欲作『MAGICA』に着手。本格的にファンタジー回帰を目指すことになりました。その“MAGICA Tour”では新作の再現ライヴが賛否を呼びもしましたが、本作はレア曲も交えながらも通常スタイルのショウ。美味しい代表曲とファンタジー回帰の勢いが瑞々しいのです。その現場を話題の新発掘マスターで現場体験できるライヴアルバム。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください！
