METALLICA in 1984 invaded the homeland of metal, England. A live album where you can experience the historical scene is a gift release decision.
The historical site is “London performance on April 8, 1984”. It is a powerful audience recording recorded at the legendary club “Marquee”. Speaking of the “KILL ‘EM ALL” era live, it has been excavated quite a bit in the official deluxe edition and so on. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s take a bird’s eye view of the schedule at that time (a little longer) and imagine what kind of position each person is in.

This is METALLICA in 1983/1984. It was right after the completion of “RIDE THE LIGHTNING” that they made their first trip to England. I did a showcase gig at the Marquee Club for two nights, but this work was recorded in the second performance. It is exactly the scene where the evolved “thrash metal” was slammed into London where the scent of NWOBHM drifts.
This work, which vacuum-packed such a historical show, is a fierce and clear name recording. It is different from the direct feeling that makes a mistake with the sound board, but there is no sense of distance. After all, the venue is a small club. There is no physical distance, and it is clear that they are recording carefully so as not to make an explosive or roaring sound. Despite the aggressive sound output, the cleanly separated feeling is wonderful, and while the riff with a clear outline roars, at the same time, you can clearly hear the rumbling bass and the maddening lead one by one.
Moreover, the point is that the main is METALLICA in April 1984. In just a few months, the sense of consistency will increase dramatically, but here, “thrash metal incarnation” explodes with a sense of desperation. Despite the ensemble not thinking about anything other than “anger” and “momentum”, it can be heard beautifully without becoming a roar … a sound that can be called a “cleanly arranged roar” or a “beautiful roar”. It’s coming out of the speaker.
What is drawn with such a sound is a withering full show that will conquer the homeland of metal in just two nights. I changed the set every night from around this time, but let’s check the set while comparing it with the Paris performance, which is the latest official sound board.

… and it looks like this. To put it bluntly, they performed all the songs except for “Motorbreath” and “Jump in the Fire” in “KILL ‘EM ALL live version”. The “RIDE THE LIGHTNING” number that was just recorded there is also beginning to be included, especially “Creeping Death” is the 9th time this day. After that, you can experience the very early performance of a large classic song that will be played.
Once upon a time, “heavy metal” was a British patent. In just a few years, the stock will be robbed by the US band, but the “METALLICA landing” in the spring of 1984 may have been the turning point. The scene of Metallica’s first visit to England, which was realized four months before MOTLEY CRUE. Please experience the best with this work.
これが1983年／1984年のMETALLICA。彼らが初渡英を果たしたのは『RIDE THE LIGHTNING』の完成直後。マーキー・クラブでショウケース・ギグを二晩行ったのですが、本作はその２公演目で記録されました。NWOBHMの残り香漂うロンドンに進化した“スラッシュ・メタル”を叩きつけた、まさにその現場なのです。 そんな歴史的なショウを真空パックした本作は、苛烈にしてクリアな名録音。サウンドボード間違えるようなダイレクト感とも違うのですが、かと言って距離感もない。何しろ、現場は狭いクラブ。物理的に距離がなく、むしろ爆音・轟音にならないよう気を配って録音しているのがよく分かる。アグレッシヴな出音にも関わらず綺麗に分離したセパレート感が素晴らしく、輪郭もくっきりとしたリフが轟きつつ、同時にゴリゴリとしたベースや舞い狂うリードも１音１音が鮮やかに聴き取れる。 しかも、その主が1984年４月のMETALLICAというところがポイント。ほんの数ヶ月後には飛躍的に整合感を増していくわけですが、ここでは自棄っぱち気味に爆走する「スラッシュ・メタルの権化」。「怒り」と「勢い」以外に何も考えていないアンサンブルにも関わらず、爆音にもならずに綺麗に聴き取れる……「綺麗に整った爆音」「美の轟音」とでも言うべきサウンドがスピーカーから吹き出してくるのです。 そんなサウンドで画かれるのは、たった二晩でメタルの故国を征服してしまうような枯れる極まるフルショウ。この頃から毎晩セットを変えていたわけですが、ここでは直近の公式サウンドボードであるパリ公演と比較しながらセットをチェックしておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ざっくばらんに言って「生演奏版KILL ‘EM ALL」で「Motorbreath」「Jump in the Fire」以外の全曲を披露。そこに録音したばかりの『RIDE THE LIGHTNING』ナンバーも盛り込み始めており、特に「Creeping Death」はこの日が９回目。その後も演奏しまくる大定番曲の極初期パフォーマンスを生体験できるのです。 かつて「ヘヴィメタル」と言えば英国の専売特許でした。ほんの数年で米国バンドにお株を奪われてしまうわけですが、1984年春の「METALLICA上陸」こそ、そのターニング・ポイントだったのかも知れません。MOTLEY CRUEに先駆けること４ヶ月前に実現したMETALLICA初渡英の現場。どうぞ、本作で極上体験してください。
