METALLICA in 1986 made real thrash metal known to the Far East even in the face of Cliff Burton’s tragedy. A masterpiece original recording that conveys the legendary first performance in Japan is now available.
This work is engraved with two shows. This is a masterpiece audience recording set of “November 19th + 20th, 1986: Nakano Sun Plaza Performance”. It is known that their first visit to Japan was right after Jason Newstead joined, but how soon after that was? Let’s unravel the schedule at the time and check the show’s position.

This is the journey from Jason joining to his first visit to Japan. They came to Japan with only two live shows and left a legacy in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. The performances in this work are the last two consecutive performances, and the 6th/7th performances after Jason joined. Currently, you can listen to the sound board of the Osaka performance in the deluxe edition BOX of “MASTER OF PUPPETS”, but this work was also a concert the next day and the day after.
This work, which records such a show, is a historical masterpiece that has become a legend. This is an original master that once appeared on the Langley label as “BREEDING ON INSANITY” and “BEYOND THE GRAVESTONE”, and it not only allows you to listen to the legendary scene, but also received rave reviews from specialized magazines for its quality. After all, it can’t be said to have a beautiful sound like today’s brutal thrash metal, but that’s why it’s a great recording with a wonderful ultra-realistic sound and plenty of aggressive riffs.
And the legendary scene is revived with that sound. When I first came to Japan, I basically had a fixed set, but it wasn’t exactly the same either. Let’s organize the contents here.

…and it looks like this. Covers early masterpieces centered around the two great albums “RIDE THE LIGHTNING” and “MASTER OF PUPPETS”. This is exactly what thrash paradise is going to be like. And the key point is the last number on the final day, “Blitzkrieg.” Not only can you not listen to it on the Osaka Soundboard, but even on your first visit to Japan, you only played on this day. On the contrary, it was actually the first performance since the “September 26th Stockholm performance” which was Cliff’s last show, and of course it was the first performance for Jason.

What is recorded in this work is not just the first visit to Japan of a major band. It is a document of Japan’s first encounter with “thrash metal”, which was a completely new music. Speaking of the late 80’s, GUNS’N ROSES’ first visit to Japan was shocking, but the music style itself was familiar. On the other hand, with “thrash metal”, it is completely unknown what kind of sound it will be faced with and what kind of groove it will be. That was an epoch-making event comparable to LED ZEPPELIN in 1972 and IRON MAIDEN’s first visit to Japan in 1980. Attend the scene with real sound. クリフ・バートンの悲劇に直面しながらも、極東に本物のスラッシュ・メタルを知らしめた1986年のMETALLICA。伝説の初来日公演を伝える傑作オリジナル録音が登場です。
そんな本作に刻まれているのは２回のショウ。「1986年11月19日＋20日：中野サンプラザ公演」の傑作オーディエンス録音セットです。彼らの初来日はジェイソン・ニューステッドの加入直後だった事が知られていますが、どれほど直後だったのか。当時のスケジュールを紐解き、ショウのポジションを確かめておきましょう。

これがジェイソン加入から初来日までの歩み。２回のライヴだけで来日を果たし、東名阪で伝説を残した。本作の中の公演はその最後の２連続公演であり、ジェイソン加入から６公演目／７公演目。現在では『MASTER OF PUPPETS』のデラックス・エディションBOXで大阪公演のサウンドボードも聴けますが、本作はその翌日・翌々日にあたるコンサートでもありました。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、これまた伝説となってきた歴史的な名録音。かつてLangleyレーベルより『BREEDING ON INSANITY』『BEYOND THE GRAVESTONE』として登場したオリジナル・マスターで、伝説の現場を聴けるというだけでなく、クオリティ面でも専門誌から絶賛が寄せられたもの。何しろ、当代きっての暴虐スラッシュ・メタルだけに現代のような美麗サウンドとは言えませんが、だからこそ素晴らしい超リアル・サウンドでアグレッシヴなリフの数々をたっぷりと浴びられる名録音なのです。
そして、そのサウンドで甦るのが伝説の現場。初来日は基本的に固定セットでしたが、完全に同じでもなかった。ここでその内容を整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。２大名盤『RIDE THE LIGHTNING』『MASTER OF PUPPETS』を軸として初期の名曲を網羅。まさにスラッシュ・パラダイスがブチかまされるのです。そして、ポイントなのが最終日のラスト・ナンバー「Blitzkrieg」。大阪サウンドボードでも聴けないだけでなく、初来日でもこの日しか演奏していない。それどころか、実はクリフ最後のショウとなった“９月26日ストックホルム公演”以来の演奏で、もちろんジェイソンにとっても初演となるパフォーマンスだったのです。

本作に記録されているのは、単に大物バンドの初来日というだけではない。まったく新しい音楽だった“スラッシュ・メタル”と日本の初対面のドキュメントなのです。80年代後期と言えばGUNS ’N ROSESの初来日も衝撃的でしたが、音楽スタイル自体は馴染みのあるものでした。それに対し、“スラッシュ・メタル”はどんな音に直面するのか、どんなノリになるのかもまったくの未知。それこそ、1972年のLED ZEPPELINや1980年IRON MAIDEN初来日にも匹敵するエポック・メイキングな出来事だったのです。その現場にリアル・サウンドで立ち会う。そんな夢を現実にしてくれる重金属の文化遺産。どうぞ、４枚組でたっぷりとご体験ください！
