METALLICA in the golden age, which reformed the form of musical works with various new ideas. A Japanese version of their monster documentary video is now available.
The monster work is “A YEAR AND A HALF IN THE LIFE OF …”. This is a two-disc set that is an elaborate DVD version of the documentary video released in 1992. In the first place, this video work itself was made into an official DVD in 1999, but the problem is that the DVD version was not released in Japan. Although the content is only documentary and Japanese subtitles for interviews and comments are the most important, it was only in the first version of the software in 1992. This work is a DVD version of the Japanese version of the laser disc, which is known for its best quality even at that time. The mint quality disc, which was treasured by the core collector, was outsourced to an overseas specialized manufacturer and transferred to a DVD with the highest quality in history.
The quality is, of course, “completely official grade”. Please be assured of that point, and the contents immediately. This video work is released in two parts, “PART I” and “PART II”, and the content concept is also different. In this work, each is a set of 2 DVDs with 1 = 1 piece. Let’s introduce each one individually.
The content of “PART I” is a production documentary of “BLACK ALBUM”. While sandwiching the above three clips, from selecting a producer to composing, rehearsing, production recording, mixing & mastering, promotion. And, until the frenzy of the release date, it will be unveiled without hiding the backstage at that time. This kind of content was truly groundbreaking. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to have a masterpiece production documentary like the “CLASSIC ALBUMS” series, but it is produced after the status and fame as a masterpiece has been solidified. This work is a documentary of “New BLACK ALBUM”, and shooting has started from the stage where it has not even been decided what kind of work it will be, let alone a masterpiece. No matter how much the momentum was to drop the flying birds, it was a bold work that could not be imagined in the traditional music business.

While DISC 1 was novel, DISC 2 is also the right path for documentary. It is a road movie closely related to the tour after the album is released. You can accompany a tour around the world, such as setting up a stage, traveling by charter plane, awards ceremonies such as MTV and Grammy, off-scenery for diving and hunting. That’s right, the video work was also JOURNEY and DEF LEPPARD, and even now it is the 18th of IRON MAIDEN. However, even if it is a straightforward style as a video work, the content is still epoch-making. その怪物作品とは『A YEAR AND A HALF IN THE LIFE OF…（コンプリート・シーンズ・オブ・メタリカ）』。1992年に発表されたドキュメンタリー・ビデオを精緻にDVD化した２枚組です。そもそも、この映像作自体は1999年に公式DVD化も実現しているのですが、問題なのはDVDバージョンの日本リリースがなかった事。内容がドキュメンタリーだけにインタビューやコメントの日本語字幕が最重要にも関わらず、それは1992年当時の初回版ソフトにしかなかったのです。本作は、そんな当時版でもベスト・クオリティで知られる日本盤レーザー・ディスクからDVD化したもの。コア・コレクターが秘蔵していたミント・クオリティ盤を海外の専門メーカーに委託し、史上最高峰クオリティでDVDに移し替えたものなのです。
そのクオリティは、当然「完全オフィシャル級」。その点は安心していただき、早速中身。この映像作は『PART I』『PART II』の２本立てでリリースされ、内容コンセプトも異なる。本作ではそれぞれ１本＝１枚でDVD化した２枚組。それぞれ、個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【DISC 1: PART I（レコーディング・ドキュメント）】
●クリップ「The Unforgiven」「Nothing Else Matters」「Enter Sandman」
『PART I』の内容は『BLACK ALBUM』の制作ドキュメンタリー。上記のクリップ３曲を挟みつつ、プロデューサー選びから作曲、リハ、本番レコーディング、ミッキシング＆マスタリング、プロモーション。そして、発売日の狂乱に至るまで、当時の裏舞台を包み隠さず披露されるのです。こうした内容は実に画期的でもありました。現在では『CLASSIC ALBUMS』シリーズのような名盤制作ドキュメンタリーも珍しくありませんが、それは名盤としての地位・名声が固まった後年になって制作されるもの。本作は「新作BLACK ALBUM」のドキュメンタリーであり、名盤どころかまだどんな作品になるのかさえ決まっていない段階から撮影が始まっている。いかに飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いだったとは言え、従来の音楽ビジネスでは考えられない大胆な作品だったのです。
そして、その内容も面白い。仮アレンジや音作りの現場など制作段階の１つひとつが興味深く、初期段階では全員がせーの！でライヴ演奏しているのも意外。さらに面白いのがラーズ・ウルリッヒの活躍ぶり。作詞作曲のメインはジェイムズなわけですが、細かいアレンジはラーズが先導しており、膨大なテイクからベストを選ぶのもラーズ。アルバムの作曲クレジットだけでは今ひとつイメージしづらかったラーズの役割が手に取る様に分かるのです。
そうしたマジメな側面だけでなく、「スタジオ生活」まで踏み込んでいるのも画期的。『BLACK ALBUM』の制作は“1990年10月ー1991年６月”の約８ヶ月もかかっており、その間にはライヴ活動もなく作業に没頭していた。生活の場としてのスタジオも描かれており、エロ雑誌の差し入れやマドンナの新作に盛り上がったり、キップ・ウィンガーの写真を的にダーツで遊んだり。訪問者もいて、ガンを患っているファンを招いたり、ジェイムズの父親が遊びに来たり。ストリッパーの表敬訪問（？）にニヤニヤするメンバーも楽しめます。
さらにさらに、猛烈に漂う「1990年／1991年」の時代感もスゴイ。当時の世界はクウェート侵攻から湾岸戦争へ一気に転がり込んでいく真っ直中。サダム・フセインや父ブッシュのニュース映像なども飛び出し、それを見つめるヒリヒリした雰囲気がリアル。重苦しい『BLACK ALBUM』を生み出した時代の空気がビビッドに感じられるのです。そして、音楽的にも当時感がリアル。出来上がったアルバムについて話し合うシーンでは「このアルバム５、６曲は古典になり得る名曲だ」「まず最初に売れるのはHolier than Thou」などと語る。まさか「Holier than Thou」をリーダー曲にしようとしていたとは……。もちろん良い曲ですが、まだまだ本人達にも「スラッシュメタルのMETALLICA」の意識が残っていたのが興味深いコメントです。
そして、終盤はアルバムが巻き起こす狂乱。「マディソン・スクエア・ガーデンでリスニング・パーティ」なんていう常識外れの巨大イベントが実施され、一般のファン19,000人が参加。普段では見る機会もないCDのプレス工場も登場し、発売日当日に行列ができるレコード店も映し出される。音楽ドキュメンタリーというと、普通は「新規インタビュー＋有り物素材」で組まれるもの。ところが本作は、１つひとつのシーンに至るまで斬新なアイディアがふんだんに盛り込まれているのです。
【DISC 2: PART II（ツアー・ドキュメント）】

斬新だったDISC 1に対し、ドキュメンタリーの正道ともなるのがDISC 2。アルバム発売後のツアーに密着したロード・ムービーです。ステージ設営やチャーター機での移動、MTVやグラミーなどの授賞式、ダイビングやハンティングに興じるオフ風景等々、世界中を回ったツアーに同行できる。そうしや映像作はJOURNEYやDEF LEPPARDでもありましたし、現在でもIRON MAIDENの十八番だったりする。ただ映像作としては正道スタイルでも、内容はやはり画期的。ファンをステージのド真ん中に招くスネイク・ピット、ドレッシング・ルームから中継で煽るラーズなど。やはり様々なアイディアで従来の常識を打ち破るエンターテインメントを創出していった姿が映し出されるのです。
そんな中でちょっと面白いのが終演後のバックステージ。最初はファンのノリに興奮しているのですが、少しずつクールダウンしてくると雰囲気は反省会にシフト。演奏の出来について話し合ったり、「For Whom The Bell Tollsのイントロ・アレンジを変えてみよう」と相談したり。マジメに音楽に取り組む素顔も垣間見せる。しかも、そこで浮かび上がる人間関係も面白い。特にジェイソン。「Master of Puppetsのエンディングで叫びすぎだ」とダメ出しをされるのですが、「叫んでない」と憮然。カメラに向かって「突然（バンドのみんなは）悪魔に変身しちまうんだ（中略）40歳くらいになって初めて気づく。それまで俺が耐えるさ。ファンのためだ」とこぼすのです。当時は“ジェイソンいじめ”の証拠映像と話題になったものですが、振り返ってみるとMETALLICAを去った時のジェイソンは38歳。なんとも予言めいたシーンでもあるのです。
そして、必見なのが終盤に登場する「フレディ・マーキュリー追悼コンサート」。新旧の重鎮が一同に会した歴史的イベントだったわけですが、そのサウンドチェックやリハーサルもたっぷり映される。これらのシーンは公式DVD『FREDDIE MERCURY TRIBUTE CONCERT』でも観られなかったものですし、本番ステージも公式DVDとは別アングルが使われている。METALLICAファン以外にもお宝なシーンなのです。
逆に、METALLICAファン必見なのがパイロの事故。ジェイムズが大やけどを負ってツアーが中断。本作は、まさに事故が起きた瞬間の「Fade to Black」も登場し、速報するニュース番組や当日の中止アナウンスも観られる。その後、治療を受けたジェイムズは２週間ほどでツアーに復帰するわけですが、本作はその復帰公演の「Nothing Else Matters」も収録。METAL CHURCHのジョン・マーシャルがサポート・ギターに付く貴重なプロショットも楽しめるのです。
デモ・テイクをシングルに入れたり、ライヴアルバム＋ビデオの巨大ボックスを出したり、全公演のSBD音源をネット販売したり。今では当たり前に思える手法も次々と開拓していったMETALLICA。そのパイオニア精神が生み出した３時間47分に及ぶ巨大ドキュメンタリー作品です。完全字幕で内容を直感的に理解できる日本盤レーザー・ディスク版を最高峰クオリティでDVD化した決定盤。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
