This work was shot at the “February 20, 1991: Amagasaki Archaic Hall” performance. It is the superb view audience shot. Speaking of the Japanese performance of “OXIDATION OF THE NATIONS Tour” accompanying “RUST IN PEACE”, our press masterpiece “OSAKA 1991 (Zodiac 206)” is familiar, but this work is a completely different performance. Above, all 8 performances. The Amagasaki performance of this work is the day before “OSAKA 1991”. As a matter of fact, this video has long been known as “Osaka on February 21st”, but recent research has revealed that it will be a separate performance. Even in this work, Dave Mustaine shouts “Osaka!”, But it is a different live compared to the actual Osaka performance “OSAKA 1991”. Mustaine, an American, probably didn’t know the difference between “Amagasaki” and “Osaka” (it’s like shouting “Tokyo !!” in Kawasaki or Chiba).
Aside from the story of such a schedule, the greatness of this work is extremely high quality. First of all, the most shocking thing is the image quality. It is a master of new excavation excavated in recent years, but this is strangely detailed & vivid. Far from not needing the “at that time” makurakotoba, it’s about the same as modern digital photography … No, that’s the professional shot level. It seems that it was caused only from the original video of the site, and the vivid color and the violently disturbing Marty’s perm hair are beautiful one by one. It is a ferocious visual beauty.
Even more wonderful is the angle. It was a top-down shot from the second floor seats, but probably because it was in the front row, there were no obstacles and the head and arms in the front row couldn’t enter at all. Literally, the super beautiful “MEGADETH only” spreads to the full field of view. On top of that, even the shooting technique is a craftsmanship. One-camera images tend to be monotonous because each member does not move from a fixed position, but I never get tired of the active zoom. I’m close to the West Up of each member, but the camera work is definitely accustomed to shooting. For example, if you shake the camera from side to side with the maximum telephoto, the screen will shake greatly even with a slight camera shake, and the aim will be uncertain. .. Dave Mustaine-> panoramic view-> Marty Friedman-> panoramic view-> mustaine-> panoramic view-> Dave Ellefson … In addition, he is clearly familiar with the songs, and he perfectly suppresses Mustaine / Marty’s solo playing and cuddling scenes. Only the first visit to Japan after Marty & Nick Menza joined, it was a haze that the individuality of the two was not known, but it is necessary to stand up for a moment with “Lucretia” and others and remove Nick who incites customers … ….
The fierce quality is drawn in a full show that is different from the 1980s and afterwards. A lot of 80’s slash numbers such as “Devil’s Island”, “Good Mourning / Black Friday”, “Hook In Mouth” and “Liar” are played, and even if it is a “RUST IN PEACE” number, it will become rare after that “Dawn Patrol” “Take No Prisoners” will also be unveiled. そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1991年２月20日：尼崎アルカイックホール」公演。その絶景オーディエンス・ショットです。『RUST IN PEACE』に伴う“OXIDATION OF THE NATIONS Tour”の日本公演と言えば当店のプレス名盤『OSAKA 1991（Zodiac 206）』がお馴染みですが、本作は完全な別公演。良い機会ですので、当時のスケジュールを振り返ってショウのポジションを確かめておきましょう。

以上、全８公演。本作の尼崎公演は『OSAKA 1991』の前日。実のところ、この映像はかねてより「２月21日の大阪」として知られてきたのですが、近年のリサーチで別公演と判明。本作でもデイヴ・ムステインが「オオサカー！」と叫んでいますが、実際の大阪公演である『OSAKA 1991』と比べてみると別ライヴ。アメリカ人のムステインには「尼崎」と「大阪」の違いは分からなかったのでしょう（川崎や千葉で「Tokyo!!」と叫ぶようなものですね）。
そんな日程の話はさておき、本作の凄味は強烈極まるクオリティ。まず、何よりも衝撃的なのは画質。近年になって発掘された新発掘のマスターなのですが、これが異様なほどに詳細＆ビビッド。「当時としては」の枕詞がいらないどころか、現代のデジタル撮影並み……いや、それこそプロショット・レベル。現場のオリジナル・ビデオから起こしたとしか思えず、鮮やかな発色、激しく振り乱すマーティのパーマ毛の１本１本まで美麗なのです。猛烈な映像美なのです。
さらに素晴らしいのはアングル。２階席からの見下ろし撮影なのですが、最前列だったのか遮蔽物ゼロで前列の頭や腕が一切入らない。文字通り、激美麗な「MEGADETHだけ」が視界いっぱいに広がる。その上に来て、撮影テクニックまでもが匠の業。各メンバーが固定ポジションから移動しないバンドだけに、ワンカメ映像は単調になりがちなのですが、アクティヴなズームでまったく飽きない。各メンバーのウェスト・アップまで寄るのですが、そのカメラワークは確実に撮影慣れしている。例えば、最大望遠のまま左右にカメラを振るとわずかな手ブレでも画面が大きく揺れ、狙いも定まらないグシャグシャ映像になるのですが、本作はサッと全景に引いてから、サッと次の狙いに寄る。デイヴ・ムステイン→全景→マーティ・フリードマン→全景→ムステイン→全景→デイヴ・エレフソン……といった感じです。さらに、曲も明らかに熟知しており、ムステイン／マーティのソロの弾き分けも寄り添い弾きシーンもばっちり押さえる。マーティ＆ニック・メンザが加入してからの初来日だけに、２人の個性は知られていなかったハズなのですが、「Lucretia」他で一瞬立ち上がって客を煽るニックまで外さないとは……。
その激烈クオリティで描かれるのが、80年代ともその後とも異なるフルショウ。『RUST IN PEACE』時代と言えば、『COMPLETE LIVE TRAX 1990-1997（Zodiac 490）』収録のウェンブリー公演フル・サウンドボードが頂点に君臨していますが、あれはフェス形式ツアー“CLASH OF THE TITANS”での記録。単独公演の本作の方が遙かに長いのです。ここで、比較しつつセットも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。サウンドボードで聴けない曲も美味しいですが、全体の構成自体が極めて特徴的。彼らのライヴ史を分析してみると、次作『破滅へのカウントダウン』をもって定番曲が出揃い、その後の基礎が完成します。しかし、『RUST IN PEACE』時代はその直前。「Devils Island」「Good Mourning/Black Friday」「Hook In Mouth」「Liar」など80年代のスラッシュ・ナンバーが大量に演奏され、『RUST IN PEACE』ナンバーにしてもその後はレア化していく「Dawn Patrol」「Take No Prisoners」も披露されていく。しかも、単にレアなのではなくファスト曲が多いために、トータルで「かっ飛ばし！」感満載のライヴなのです。
さらにさらに、かっ飛ばしつつも80年代とも異なる。マーティ＆ニックを得たことで（ドラッグを抜いた事で）演奏力が格段に向上。これまでのやけっぱち感ではなく、激走しながらも整合感たっぷりでギリギリと引き締まったストイックなアンサンブル。巧いからこそ、安定したからこそ、シャープな切れ味のまま激走。「ミスらなくなったから速くしたよ」とでも言わんばかりです。メジャーアクトとしての大物感までもほんのりと身にまとい、複雑・精緻・正確な上にスパスパと心地よく切り刻まれるショウなのです。
「かつて」を遙かに超える精密さ、「その後」では失われた激走。考えてみれば、「メタルマシンMEGADETH」の全力運転が日本で披露されたのは、1991年だけだったのかも知れません。本作は、そのフルショウをアクティヴ・ショットで絶景体験できる貴重にして最高の１枚なのです。本来であれば、ギフトどころかプレス級の勝ちを誇る映像傑作。どうぞ、この機会にぜひご体験ください！
