Absolute master Mike Millard who loved jazz / fusion as well as rock. Lenny White’s superb live album that he left behind is now available.
It was “April 2, 1976 Huntington Beach performance” that was imbued with such a work. It is a transcendental audience recording that recorded the entire two performances a day performed at the late legendary club “Golden Bear”. Speaking of 1978, two works, “PRESENTS THE ADVENTURES OF ASTRAL PIRATES” and “STREAMLINE”, were released, but the latter was produced only in July 1978. This work is about 3 months before that. It was a concert accompanied by the master Marcus Miller who will also participate in “STREAMLINE”.
Lenny’s live record itself is valuable, but this work is a transcendental sound that is extremely valuable. Since it is the work of the absolute master Millard, it is natural at the highest level, but this work is transcendent even if it has that standard. The reason is probably the venue. The capacity of the “Golden Bear” is about 300 people, which is even smaller than the “Roxy (capacity of 500 people)” purveyor to Millard. The feeling of closed room and close contact is firmly engraved in this work, and it is extremely close. The on-core is powerful and full of frontal feeling, and the fine details and the wonderfully separated feeling make you forget the fact that it is a spatial recording.
It’s just like calling it a “sound board”, but if you could easily say it, it would be rude to record. The reality that you can see the body of the instrument vibrating in front of you is incredibly different, and no matter how powerful it is, it will not be afraid at all and its lustrous beauty will be enormous. It’s more of an official than a soundboard grade … No, it’s a sound quality that is comparable to even a studio masterpiece.
Two performances that seemed to concentrate and reduce Lenny’s solo career are drawn in the sound world that can be said to be the essence of the mirrored sound. This work is completely recorded in a 3-disc set of “DISC 1 = Early Show” and “DISC 2/3 = Late Show”, but in fact, these 2 stages have no duplication of songs and are 2 hours and 15 minutes. It doesn’t feel strange to listen to it as a long live album. Here, let’s organize the two sets together.

While composed of a repertoire of three solo works, the axis is the latest work “PRESENTS THE ADVENTURES OF ASTRAL PIRATES” at that time. It is a style that interweaves RETURN TO FOREVER’s “Sorceress” and Bobbi Humphrey’s cover “Sunset Burgundy”. “Sunset Burgundy” is a song from Humphrey’s “FREE STYLE”, and Marcus also participated. Also, speaking of the combination of Lenny & Marcus, there was “Egypt” of “BIG CITY”, but this day was not. Conversely, it’s also a gorgeous live album that re-records Lenny’s solo album with Marcus.
RETURN TO FOREVER’s “SANTA MONICA 1977 (Uxbridge 1322)” comes to mind when you say “mirrored fusion work”, but this work is as good as that super masterpiece. No, considering the rarity of Lenny’s solo live and the collaboration with Marcus Miller, it is the most important work. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1976年４月２日ハンティントン・ビーチ公演」。今は亡き伝説的クラブ“ゴールデン・ベアー”で実施された１日２公演を丸ごと記録した超絶級オーディエンス録音です。1978年と言えば、『PRESENTS THE ADVENTURES OF ASTRAL PIRATES』『STREAMLINE』の２作がリリースされたわけですが、後者が制作されたのは1978年７月になってから。本作はその約３ヶ月前。『STREAMLINE』にも参加する事になる名手マーカス・ミラーも帯同したコンサートでした。
レニーのライヴ記録自体が貴重なわけですが、本作はその貴重度もブッ飛ぶ超絶級サウンド。絶対名手ミラードの作なのですから極上で当たり前なのですが、本作はその基準を持ってしても超絶。その要因は何と言っても会場でしょう。“ゴールデン・ベアー”のキャパシティは約300名でして、ミラード御用達の“ロキシー（500名収容）”よりもさらに狭い。本作には、その密室感・密着感がしっかりと刻まれており、極めて近い。オンな芯は力強く目の前感たっぷりで、ディテールの細やかさや見事なセパレート感は空間録音という事実を忘れさせる。
まさに「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶ相応しいのですが、カンタンに言い切ってしまったら録音に失礼に当たる。目の前で楽器のボディが振動しているのまで分かるリアリティはケタ違いですし、どんなに力強くてもまったくビビらず艶やかな美しさも絶大。サウンドボード級と言うよりはオフィシャル級……いえ、スタジオ名作にさえ負けないサウンド・クオリティなのです。
ミラード・サウンドの粋とも言える音世界で描かれるのは、レニーのソロ・キャリアを濃縮還元したような２公演。本作は「DISC 1＝アーリー・ショウ」「DISC 2/3＝レイトショウ」の３枚組で完全収録しているのですが、実はこの２ステージは曲のダブりが一切なく、２時間15分の長尺ライヴアルバムとして聴いても違和感がない。ここでは２回分のセットをまとめて整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています（下の曲目を見ると両公演で「Theme For Astral Pirates」を演奏しているようにも見えますが、アーリーショウは開演を告げるSEテープです）。ソロ３作のレパートリーで構成しつつ、その軸は当時の最新作『PRESENTS THE ADVENTURES OF ASTRAL PIRATES』。そこにRETURN TO FOREVERの「Sorceress」やボビー・ハンフリーのカバー「Sunset Burgundy」を織り交ぜたスタイルです。「Sunset Burgundy」はハンフリーの『FREESTYLE』収録曲で、マーカスも参加していました。また、レニー＆マーカスのコンビネーションと言えば『BIG CITY』の「Egypt」もありましたが、この日はなし。逆に言えば、レニーのソロ・アルバムをマーカスと録り直したような豪華なライヴアルバムでもあるわけです。
「ミラードのフュージョン作品」と言ったらRETURN TO FOREVERの『SANTA MONICA 1977（Uxbridge 1322）』が浮かびますが、本作はあの超名盤に勝るとも劣らない超絶作。いや、レニーのソロライヴという稀少度、マーカス・ミラーとのコラボレーションという内容を考えれば、それ以上の最重要作品です。それこそ、このまま公式リリースして欲しいほどの文化遺産。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
