What is engraved in this work is “December 2, 1976 Memphis Performance”. This is a scorching audience recording. The biggest point of this work is the show itself, where both “interrupted incidents” and “super rare songs” pop out. This is KISS in 1976/1977. The Memphis performance of this work is the 6th performance of “North America #4”, which was about 4 months before the first visit to Japan. It was at the beginning of the “ROCK & ROLL OVER Tour” that had just begun.
[The “night of the incident” where the show was interrupted many times] Such a show is historic in many ways, but the most shocking thing of all is the “incident.” It seems that the audience caused some trouble during the frenzy, and even the local fire department chief got on stage and interrupted the show multiple times. When the tape was played, there was a strange atmosphere from the beginning. “Detroit Rock City” begins as the crowd cheers so loudly that you can feel the pressure of the wind, and some shouts fly among them.Then, as soon as the second song “Take Me” ended, the show was interrupted. At this time, there was an announcement to the audience, “Open the aisle!” and the interruption lasted about 30 seconds, but this did not work for the audience, who were getting excited. From there, the show was interrupted again after “Firehouse”, which was about to start 4 songs. There is a clear sense of crisis in the announcement pleading for caution, warning, “The fire chief will cancel the show!” The audience was angry with their spinal reflexes, and there was a mix of applause hoping for the show to resume, which led to a huge call of “We want KISS!”. The first interruption lasted about 30 seconds, but the second one lasted about 5 minutes. Then, as if to calm down the frenzy of the audience, Paul starts singing the intro of “I Want You” and returns to the show… This work records such an incident scene uncut. The restarted show itself is extremely rare because it is in the early stages of the tour. Speaking of “ROCK & ROLL OVER Tour”, for us, the first visit to Japan is the standard. First of all, it’s the new songs from “ROCK & ROLL OVER.” This work is the oldest tour record, and the new song group is also the oldest recording. “Ladies Room” has a fresh unregi with a singalong, and it is also the only recording where you can listen to the full version of “Hard Luck Women”, which was sealed until the 90s.
Furthermore, the familiar songs are different from usual. It is unique to the early stage of the tour that the new songs and “Strutter” coexist, and the position of “Makin’ Love” has not yet been determined, and it will only be played on this day as an encore. これが1976年／1977年のKISS。本作のメンフィス公演は初来日の約４ヶ月前にあたる「北米#4」の６公演目。“ROCK & ROLL OVER Tour”が始まったばかりの序盤だったわけです。
【何度もショウが中断される“事件の夜”】
そんなショウは様々な点で歴史的なのですが、何よりもショッキングなのが「事件」。凄まじい熱狂の中で観客がトラブルを起こしたらしく、地元消防署の署長までステージに上がってショウを何度も中断するのです。テープを再生させると開演時から異様な雰囲気。風圧を感じるほどの大歓声を掻き分けるように「Detroit Rock City」がスタートし、その中でなにやら怒鳴り声も飛ぶ。
そして、２曲目「Take Me」が終わるや早速ショウが中断されてしまう。この時は観客に向かって「通路を開けて！」とアナウンスされるだけで約30秒ほどの中断なのですが、どうも熱くなった観客には通用しなかった。そこから４曲畳みかけた「Firehouse」の後で再度ショウが中断。ここでは注意に応じるよう懇願するアナウンスに危機感がアリアリと浮かび、「消防署の署長がショウを中止させてしまうぞ！」と警告している。脊椎反射で怒る観客、ショウ再開を望む拍手が入り乱れ、「We want KISS!」の巨大コールへと発展。１回目は30秒程度だった中断も、２回目は約５分も続く。そして、そんな観客の狂乱を鎮めるかのようにポールが「I Want You」のイントロを歌い出し、ショウへ戻っていく……本作は、そんな事件現場をノーカットで記録しきっているのです。

なんとも凄絶なドキュメントですが、それだけで終わらないから本作はスゴい。再開されたショウ自体もツアー初期だからこそのレア度が強烈なのです。“ROCK & ROLL OVER Tour”と言えば、私たちにとっては初来日こそがすべての基準。ここではフル・プロショット『COMPLETE BUDOKAN 1977』と比較しながらセットをチェックしてみましょう。

まず何と言っても『ROCK & ROLL OVER』の新曲群。本作はツアー最古の記録であり、新曲群も最古の録音。「Ladies Room」はシンガロング入りのアンレジが新鮮ですし、90年代まで封印されてしまう「Hard Luck Women」のフルバージョンが聴ける唯一の録音でもあります。
さらに言えば、お馴染みの曲も普段とは違う。新曲群と「Strutter」が共存しているのもツアー初期ならではですし、「Makin’ Love」のポジションもまだ決まっておらず、アンコールで演奏されるのもこの日だけ。１曲ずつの貴重度だけでなく、全体の流れも激レアなのです。
