The new KAJAGOOGOO made their first visit to Japan in 1984 with their second album “ISLANDS”, which could be called their re-debut. A soundboard album that can be said to be a symbol of this is now available.
This work was recorded at the “July 13, 1984: Shibuya Public Hall” performance. This is a stereo soundboard recording. 1984 was the time when KAJAGOOGOO’s Japanese interest was at its peak. It was so unusual that he came to Japan twice in one year. This is also a good opportunity, so let’s look back on the two visits to Japan and check the position of this work.

A total of 10 performances. It is rare for a band to come to Japan twice for a single album, but coming back to Japan in just two months is extremely unusual. It shows how much Japan at the time was looking for KAJAGOOGOO. The Shibuya performance of this work will be for those who are visiting Japan for the first time in July. It was also a concert that was the first two performances.
It is also known that such a show was broadcast on FM, and the FM soundboard has been loved as a record symbolizing their first visit to Japan. This work is also an air check master that records that legendary broadcast. The quality is completely official. As a matter of fact, the early KAJAGOOGOO live performances were not perfect even if they were official works, but this work is perfect without any complaints. Not only is the sound quality simply high, but the noiseless recording is glossy and beautiful, and the well-organized mix is highly complete as a musical work. There is no loss of detail due to increased sound pressure, which is common after the 90’s.
While the sound is full of the feel of a work, this work also has an excellent documentary feel. The key point is loud cheers. This is also a wonderfully balanced song with the performance and vocals, so it’s not jarring at all, but it’s a deep singing voice. Western music girls are fully exposed and are screaming with joy. Coupled with the sound of the synth, it creates a tremendous sense of the times. After “Ooh To Be Ah,” there is a break of more than two minutes, and at that time, the katakana pronunciation of “Ankkoru! Ankkoru!” is heard, and the overly emotional “Nigguuuu!” ” are flying around. No matter how vast the world is or how long rock history is, the speakers emit a mood that could only exist in Japan in the 1980s.
The completely official time machine sound depicts their passionate performance on their first visit to Japan, which has become a legend. The simultaneously released “LONDON 1983 (Uxbridge 2010)” was a set that felt like a “live performance version of WHITE FEATHERS,” but this work is a “live performance version of ISLANDS.” Let’s actually organize the set.

In particular, Nick Beggs has since become a sought-after master bassist in the progressive rock world, and has come to Japan many times as a backup for Steve Hackett and John Paul Jones. The singing bass is also poured into the brain with the finest sound board.
Speaking of Nick, pay attention to the Japanese MC. After taking a breather after “On A Plane,” he said politely but in katakana, “I’m so happy that I’m finally coming back to Japan for the last time on my world tour. Everyone in Japan is so excited. I want to hear “Islands.” That’s what he says. And “Kajagoogoo”, which synchronizes with Western music girls in spelling chorus. After all, this broadcast is nothing but a legend.
A week after this show, while KAJAGOOGOO was still in Japan, the movie “The Neverending Story” was released in the UK. Limar quickly became a man of the moment. 再デビュー作とも言うべき2ndアルバム『ISLANDS』を引っさげ、初来日を果たした1984年の新生KAJAGOOGOO。その象徴とも言うべきサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「1984年７月13日：渋谷公会堂」公演。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。1984年は、KAJAGOOGOOの日本人気が頂点を迎えた時期。異例とも言える１年に二度の来日が実現するほどでした。良い機会でもありますので、二回の来日をまとめて振り返り、本作のポジションを確かめてみましょう。

以上、全10公演。１枚のアルバムで二度来日するケースは希にありますが、わずか２ヶ月での再来日は異例中の異例。いかに当時の日本がKAJAGOOGOOを求めていたのかがうかがえます。本作の渋谷公演は、７月の初来日の方。それも序盤の２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウはFM放送された事でも知られ、そのFMサウンドボードは彼らの初来日を象徴する名記録として愛されてきました。本作もまた、その伝説放送を記録したエアチェック・マスターなのです。そのクオリティは、完全オフィシャル級。実のところ、初期KAJAGOOGOOのライヴは公式作品であっても鉄壁とは行かなかったりするのですが、本作は文句なしに完璧。単純に高音質というだけでなく、ノイズレスな収録は艶やかで美しく、整ったミックスは音楽作品として完成度も高い。90年代以降にありがちな音圧稼ぎでディテールが潰れるようなこともありません。
サウンド的には作品感たっぷりでありつつ、本作はドキュメント感にも優れている。その要は大歓声。これまた演奏やヴォーカルと見事なバランスが取られていて決して耳障りではないのですが、その中身が真っ黄色な嬌声。洋楽女子丸出しな歓喜でキャアッキャア。シンセの音色とも相まって、凄まじい時代感を演出。「Ooh To Be Ah」の後では２分以上ブレイクが収録されているのですが、その際もカタカナ発音の「アンッコールゥ！　アンッコールゥ！」が巻き起こり、想いを込めすぎて濁音になった「ニッッグゥウゥ！」が飛び交う。世界広しと言えど、ロック史がいかに長かろうと、「80年代の日本」でしかあり得ないムードがスピーカーから噴き出すのです。
その完全オフィシャル級のタイムマシン・サウンドで描かれるのは、もはや伝説となっている初来日の熱演。同時リリースの『LONDON 1983（Uxbridge 2010）』は「生演奏版WHITE FEATHERS」という感じのセットでしたが、その点本作は「生演奏版ISLANDS」。実際に、セットを整理してみましょう。

そして、そんなセットを綴るパフォーマンスが実に素晴らしい。曲はポップではありますが、その演奏は巧み。特にニック・ベッグスはその後プログレ界で名ベーシストとして引っ張りだことなる巧者であり、スティーヴ・ハケットやジョン・ポール・ジョーンズのバックとして何度も来日もしている。その歌心あるベースも極上サウンドボードで脳みそに流し込まれるのです。
ニックと言えば、日本語MCにも注目。「On A Plane」の後で一息入れつつ、丁寧に、しかしカタカナ発音で「ワールド・ツアーノ最後ニ日本へ帰ッテ来ラレテ、トテモ嬉シイデス。日本ノ皆サンアリガトウ。「Islands」ヲ聴イテクダサイ」と語るのです。そして、洋楽女子たちとスペル唱和でシンクロする「Kajagoogoo」。やはり、この放送は伝説以外の何物でもありません。
このショウの一週間後、まだKAJAGOOGOOが日本に滞在している間に映画『ネバーエンディング・ストーリー』が英国で封切り。リマールは一躍時の人となっていきました。渋谷の舞台に立つ４人はそんな未来を知る由もなく、極東の大喝采に全力で応えている。本作に封じられているのは、単に素晴らしい生演奏だけでなく、そんな時代の曲がり角でもあるのです。まさに伝説以外の何物でもない初来日を象徴するサウンドボードの極上マスター。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にお楽しみください。
