JUDAS PRIEST in 1990 who redefined the music genre “heavy metal” with the famous board “PAINKILLER”. Omoto master who can experience the tour site of the climax is a new excavation.
“Performance in San Diego on November 18, 1990” is imbued in this work. It is a powerful audience recording that vacuum-packed the whole story. Speaking of live albums in the “PAINKILLER” era, the sound board masterpiece “DEFINITIVE IRVINE 1991 (Zodiac 543)” reigns at the top, but this work has different tours rather than different performances. This is the 1990/1991 JUDAS PRIEST. “PAINKILLER Tour” ended with the performance in Japan in April 1991. The final “North America # 4” that started three months later was the “OPERATION ROCK & ROLL Tour” with Alice Cooper and MOTORHEAD. “DEFINITIVE IRVINE 1991” was the latter record, but the San Diego performance of this work is the former. It was a concert that was the 17th performance of “North America # 1” (By the way, from this “North America # 1”, MEGADETH’s coupling pro shot “DETROIT 1990 (Shades 1182)” was also left, but this work about a month ago).
The recording of this show has been known for a long time, but this work is an upgraded album that updates its highest peak. It is a branded product that has been digitized directly from the newly discovered Omoto cassette. The upgrade is completely “different class”. I notice that the tape speed, which was very fast at the moment of playback, is just right, but rather than that, the basic quality itself is very different. Although it is slightly over-peaked in some places, it is the same as the conventional master, but the cloudy and cloudy air is quickly cleared, and the outline is many times clearer. It sounds like it has improved to the core strength and direct feeling too vividly.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1990年11月18日サンディエゴ公演」。その一部始終を真空パックした強力オーディエンス録音です。『PAINKILLER』時代のライヴアルバムと言えば、サウンドボード名盤『DEFINITIVE IRVINE 1991（Zodiac 543）』が頂点に君臨しておりますが、本作は別公演どころかツアー自体も異なっていたりします。その意味をご説明するためにも、まずはロブ・ハルフォード脱退直前でもあった活動概要から振り返ってみましょう。

これが1990年／1991年のJUDAS PRIEST。“PAINKILLER Tour”は1991年４月の来日公演で終了。その３ヶ月後から始まった最終「北米#4」はアリス・クーパーやMOTORHEADとの“OPERATION ROCK & ROLL Tour”でした。『DEFINITIVE IRVINE 1991』は後者の記録でしたが、本作のサンディエゴ公演は前者。「北米#1」の17公演目にあたるコンサートでした（ちなみに、この「北米#1」からはMEGADETHのカップリング・プロショット『DETROIT 1990（Shades 1182）』も残されましたが、本作はその約１ヶ月前でもあります）。
このショウは以前から録音が知られてきたのですが、本作はその最高峰を更新するアップグレード・アルバム。新発掘の大元カセットからダイレクトにデジタル化された銘品なのです。そのアップグレードぶりは完全に「別物級」。再生した瞬間に思いっきり早かったテープスピードがジャストになっている事に気づきますが、それどころではなく基本クオリティ自体が大違い。ところどころオーバーピーク気味なのは従来マスターと変わらないものの、モコモコと曇っていた空気感はサッと綺麗に晴れ渡り、輪郭は何倍もクリアに大変貌。あまりに鮮やかさに芯の力強さやダイレクト感まで向上しているように聞こえるのです。
そんな目の醒めるアップグレード・サウンドで画かれるのは、プリースト復活！を満天下に宣言する純金属なフルショウ。『DEFINITIVE IRVINE 1991』との違いもポイントなので、比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。久々復活の「Grinder」や「Riding On The Wind」「The Sentinel」など、美味しい名曲がたっぷり。しかもスコット・トラヴィスのドラミングによって金属感がアップし、再結成後とは違ってロブがオリジナル・キーで叫んでいる。ロブと言えば、ツアー序盤とあって絶好調なのも嬉しい。
さらに言えば、そんな重金属パラダイスを叩きつけられた会場ムードもスゴい。ロック史的に言えば「90年代＝ヘヴィメタル絶滅期」なのですが、ここではまだまだ予兆も感じさせない。それどころか、プリースト自身の復活ムードによって凄まじい熱狂が生み出されており、「米国ではこんなに人気があったのか」と驚くほど。まさに全盛を取り戻した……いや、それ以上の熱量がスピーカーから噴き出してくるのです。
