As expected, my hands started to sweat and my hands became slippery (and my mood became more exciting). Only the “Stairway to Heaven” instrumental had a scene where it could be chilled from the intro, and the roughness was conspicuous. It ends up being charming.
Also, in the ARMS American leg, Paul Rogers participated in Jimmy’s part, which was a hint of the farm later, but before that it was much more sophisticated as a stage act compared to the time of Albert Hall. ing. 最近はちょっと音沙汰のなかったZEPレア音源発掘チーム「Dogs of Doom」が久々に公開してくれたのは1983年のARMSツアーからジミー・ペイジのセットのステレオ・サウンドボード録音。しかもアメリカン・レグからLAフォーラム公演という驚きの発掘。ARMSアメリカン・レグは昔からおなじみMSGの流出プロショット映像と各種良好オーディエンスで占められている感があり、今になってジミーのパートだけながらもサウンドボードが出てくるとは。
しかもARMSツアーのLAフォーラムと言えば昨年マイク・ミラード録音の「L.A. FORUM 1983 2ND NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION TAPES」があっという間に売り切れてしまったのも記憶に新しいところですが、そちらが12月6日のライブを捉えていたのに対し、こちらは初日である5日。そちらをお持ちの方であれば、比べてみると「Prelude」を弾き終えたところでジミーの発したMCがまるで違うことが解るはずで、このことだけでも意義のある発掘であると実感してもらえるかと。
オフィシャルで昔からおなじみ9月のアルバート・ホールではジミーにとってZEP解散以来初めて自身のアクトとなるステージだったことから、がっちがちに緊張している様子が映し出されていましたが、アメリカン・レグでは別人のように楽しそうでMCも饒舌なのは先のMSG映像が証明していた通り。それが大好きなLAフォーラムへの帰還ともなればジミーのご機嫌ぶりは相当なもので、先の「Prelude」前後のやり取りを聞いてもらうだけでもはっきりと感じられるはず。
それほどご機嫌な様子からステージに現れただけのことはあり、ここでのジミーのプレイは驚くほど素晴らしい。もちろんARMS一連のステージのおかげでライブ・パフォーマーとしてのリハビリが始まった時期ですので、プレイのタッチは粗い。だがしかし、粗いなりにジミーが非常に生き生きと弾きまくっている様子がリアルに伝わってくるのには驚かされます。この時期でこれほどまで弾けている日は他にないのではないでしょうか。
それに今回発掘された音源はPAアウトのサウンドボードながらステレオで音質も非常に良好。それ故にダイレクト感も強い訳ですが、それでもなおジミーがここで聞かせたプレイには他の日と違う堂々とした力強さがある。
さすがに汗をかき始めて手が滑りやすく（おまけに気分も盛り上がってきて）なったのであろう「Stairway to Heaven」インストゥルメンタルだけはイントロからして冷や冷やさせられる場面があり、しかも粗が目立ってしまうのですが、それも愛嬌というもの。
またARMSアメリカン・レグではジミーのパートでポール・ロジャーズが参加し、これが後のザ・ファームの伏線となった訳ですが、それ以前にアルバート・ホールの時と比べてステージ・アクトとして俄然洗練されている。やはりジミーには優れたボーカリストが必要なのだと再認識させられる音源だとも言える。面白いことに彼が登場してなおさらジミーはプレイが上向き、なおかつロジャースのMCに割って入るほど。とにかくここでの彼は本当に楽しそう。
よってジミーのパートのみという収録ながらも聞き応えは十分。それどころかZEP解散からファーム結成までの間では一番充実した彼のプレイが聞かれるのでは？おまけに「Midnight Moonlight」を始めとしてこの時のジミーならではなセットリストが今となっては貴重。
そして今回の限定プレスCDリリースに際しては70％も高かったピッチを厳格に調整。9月にこの音源がネット上に現れた際、あまりに高いピッチにさじを投げてしまったマニアもすくなくないのでは。この問題がアジャストされたことで聞きやすさは一気に向上。そんな正確なピッチとステレオ・サウンドボード録音にてジミーの知られざる名演をじっくりお楽しみください！
