Discovering the endless Mike Millard audience recording master. The sound sources of various artists are released every week and continue to excite enthusiasts, but this Sunday it was Jefferson Starship’s 1975 Long Beach Arena. Speaking of the same venue of the year, Millard has just achieved a feat that will be handed down to posterity at Led Zeppelin two months ago. For that reason, stable mirrored quality that is overwhelmed by the powerful sound image from this recording.
In the first place, is the stage of Jefferson Airplane musicians a genre that Millard is not interested in? I was surprised just by the fact that they went to their stage. Mirrored’s wonderful work that even such an artist can handle the overwhelming recording state exactly.
The on-sound image is overwhelming this time, and as soon as you press the play button and the opening “Ride The Tiger” starts, you will be able to hear the sound board with a deep blue “mirrored sound quality” with confidence.
The heyday of the group, which was upgraded from Jefferson Airplane, which stopped in 1973, to Jefferson Starship in 1974, began in 1975. In this year, when the album “RED OCTOPUS” was released and it was more successful than the Airplane era, Millard recorded a precious time.
May 25th, which he recorded, was less than a month before the release of “RED OCTOPUS”. Many songs from the same album have already been set in, and as a whole, it is a self-confident set list that is mostly combined with the previous work “DRAGON FLY” recording and summarized with Starship songs.
The great attraction of this recording is that it is a valuable time for members. It was the last time Papa John Creach, who joined the end of Airplane and became popular as a unique grandpa Fiddler, was enrolled in Starship from translation.
In addition to that, it was also the time when Marty Balin, an ally of the Airplane era who participated as a guest singer in “DRAGON FLY”, became an official member. In other words, the time when Papa John and Barin were on stage together is very short. It means that Millard captured the stage of such a precious time.
His cheerful grandpa, Papa John, left Starship after the tour ended when the story of his solo album came up. Even so, his presence is enormous, and it can be seen that he was loved by everyone, such as sharing and talking with Grace Slick not only in fiddle but also in MC.
In addition, Jefferson Starship succeeded in producing a hard sound like 70’s rock by joining musicians such as guitarist Craig Chaquiso, which led to a big hit of “RED OCTOPUS”. Therefore, it is a performance of the day that is hard and sometimes jams around him, but it is wonderful that John Creech digs into the fiddle with “Wooden Ships” and so on.
Furthermore, with the return of Valine, the greatest charm in the air plane sound that he, Slick, and Paul Kantner’s songs intersect is revived, and the song part is remarkably enriched, and the performance side and the front The value is also great in that Millard captures the best time, when the fulfillment in both was remarkable.
At the end of the live, only the numbers from the air plane era of yesteryear were used, but they also had a hard rock sound that wiped out the psychedelic feeling (which was old-fashioned at that time) in a good way. Rather, it has evolved into a new sound with Chaquiso’s guitar and the drummer John Barbita who supported this heyday.
With the addition of Valine, the last vacant seat of the starship was filled, such as the song “Sweeter Than Honey” from “RED OCTOPUS” that had already been released just before the release, and the performance and singing aspects were overwhelmingly enhanced. It also captures the audience’s excitement in a realistic way.
And it can be said that it is a document that captures the state where the band is just on the updraft, such as a slick where the best singing performance stands out throughout. Different from the 60’s psychedelic air plane and 80’s synth pop starship, the stage by the strongest members of the time when they were playing the hardest and rocky sound with the best sound quality!
