Jeff Beck returned to the forefront of the music scene in 2001, winning a Grammy Award for “YOU HAD IT COMING,” which further explored the techno-rock line. A new masterpiece that allows you to experience the scene at its best is now available.
What is inscribed in this work is “March 23, 2001 New York performance”. This is a superlative audience recording recorded at the now-defunct traditional venue “Roseland Ballroom”. Our store has an archive of Jeff’s entire career, including the press masterpiece “COMING THE FIRST NIGHT (Wardour-094)” and soundboard album “HYDE PARK 2001 (Wardour-546)” from the “YOU HAD IT COMING” era. etc. are very popular. This is an overview of activities from 2000 to 2002. “HYDE PARK 2001” was a “European” leg, but “YOU HAD IT COMING” and this work are “North American #1” records. However, the position in the leg is exactly the opposite, and while the press masterpiece “YOU HAD IT COMING” was on the first day of the tour, this work is a live album on the last day of “North America #1”.
This work, which vacuum-packs such a scene, is a clear and direct masterpiece recording. It is a new master that was recently released, but the dense core and tight outline are sound board quality. Although it has an audience-like tone, it is a direct sound that does not feel any distance at all.
If you are familiar with the net original sound, you may be thinking, “Again, it’s not such an amazing recording.” Actually, that’s right. This work is a “transformed” album with our own mastering. As a matter of fact, although the treble extension of the net original sound is not bad, the mid-bass is spread out and unclear. Overall, it was “fair” grade. However, this sound source was extremely compatible with digital mastering. When I sorted out the sounds, a sharp outline emerged, and when I analyzed each band and adjusted the balance, the ensemble began to stand out in an interesting way.
As our customers may realize, digital technology is not magic. It is true that things that were unthinkable in the past are now possible, but in the end it all depends on the original sound. Depending on your individuality, there are some recordings that just become unnatural the more you mess with them, and conversely, there are some recordings that get better as if by just a slight change in the phono. This new master was a sample recording of the latter.
This reborn, superb sound depicts a full show on the final day of the US tour, filled with a sense of freedom. The aforementioned soundboard masterpiece “HYDE PARK 2001” was a short set that fit on one CD, perhaps because it was a festival appearance, but this work is a full set of about 90 minutes. In order to get a feel for the volume of songs, let’s organize the sets while comparing them.

…and it looks like this. The band is centered around the techno-rock double series “WHO ELSE!” and “YOU HAD IT COMING,” and basically follows the style of their 2000 performance in Japan. However, classics such as “Behind the Veil,” “Led Boots,” and “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” as well as “Rosebud/What Mama Said,” are part of the repertoire that has not been performed in Japan. You can also enjoy plenty of classics, including “Roy’s Toy” and “Rollin’ and Tumblin’,” which you couldn’t hear on “HYDE PARK 2001.”
Jeff Beck once again stands at the forefront of the times with a new sound. This is a new masterpiece that allows you to experience the full show at its best. The highest peak updated sound that has been transformed by optimal mastering that sees the potential of new excavated masters. Please feel free to experience it to your heart’s content.

これが2000年ー2002年の活動概要。『HYDE PARK 2001』は「欧州」レッグでしたが、『YOU HAD IT COMING』や本作は「北米#1」の記録。ただしレッグ内の位置は真逆でして、プレス名盤『YOU HAD IT COMING』がツアー初日だったのに対し、本作は「北米#1」の最終日のライヴアルバムです。
そんな現場を真空パックした本作は、クリア＆ダイレクトな名録音。最近になって公開された新マスターなのですが、オンで密度たっぷりの芯も、キリリと引き締まった輪郭もサウンドボード級。音色的にオーディエンスらしさもありはしますが、距離をまったく感じないダイレクト・サウンドなのです。
ここでネット原音をご存知の方なら「またまた、そんなに凄い録音じゃないでしょ」と思われるかも知れません。実はその通り。本作は当店の独自マスタリングで「化けた」アルバムなのです。実のところ、ネット原音は高音の伸びこそ悪くないものの、中低音がボワボワと広がって不明瞭。全体的には「まあまあ」級でした。ところが、この音源はデジタル・マスタリングとの相性がすこぶる良かった。鳴りを整理してみるとキリッとした輪郭が姿を現し、帯域ごとに分析してバランスを整えると面白いようにアンサンブルが際立っていったのです。
当店のお客様なら実感があるかも知れませんが、デジタル技術は魔法ではありません。確かに昔では考えられないような事も可能になりましたが、結局は原音次第。個性によってはイジればイジるほど不自然になっていくだけの録音もありますし、逆にホンのちょっと変えただけでまるで別問のように良くなるものもある。今回の新マスターは、後者の見本のような録音だったのです。
そんな生まれ変わった極上サウンドで描かれるのは、全米ツアーを完遂した開放感溢れる最終日のフルショウ。前述のサウンドボード名盤『HYDE PARK 2001』はフェス出演だったためかCD１枚に収まるショートセットでしたが、本作は約90分のフルセット。その曲数ボリュームを実感していただくためにも、比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。
