Jackson Browne / the Christic Institute Benefit Concert 1990 Day 2 / 2CDR / Uxbridge
Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA, USA 17th November 1990
The acoustic live event where Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Brown met together in 1990 was held for two days, and Mike Millard recorded on both days.
Except for Springsteen, whose stages have been officially released on both days, his achievements are Raitt’s “THE CHRISTIC INSTITUTE BENEFIT CONCERT 1990 DAY 2: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES”, Brown’s “THE CHRISTIC INSTITUTE BENEFIT CONCERT 1990: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION TAPES” has been released.
Then, it was Brown’s turn to perform on the second day… JEMS finally made it public. As the sound source of Raitt, who told us about the situation on the second day ahead of the others, proved it, the recording on the second day of Millard gave the impression that the sound image had a sense of distance compared to the previous day.
Still, there is no doubt that it will be a high-quality recording for an audience, and it has succeeded in capturing a clear balance and a sense of realism without sarcasm. This was not a normal rock concert, but a charity concert, and I think the unplugged stage was successful.
On the other hand, this day was also the day that JEMS released the soundboard recording one step ahead, and by coupling it, it was possible to realize the strongest release on the second day of the 1990 charity concert.
Since the mirrored recording of this day is a sound image with a sense of distance, the presence of the stereo soundboard recording is strong. What JEMS released in 2020 was a version transferred from a digital PA out sound board, so it would not be surprising if it was originally released on a press board.
Moreover, since it is a small acoustic performance, you can feel the acoustic tone, the plain accompaniment, and Brown’s breathing.
However, since it is a PA-out soundboard, while it boasts outstanding clarity, it is difficult to ignore the lack of realism. This mirrored recording perfectly compensates for that point, and it is wonderful that you can feel the peaceful atmosphere of the venue that cannot be transmitted from the PA.
And these two days of stages were literally a turning point for Brown. This is because the album “WORLD IN MOTION” released in the previous year suffered a crushing defeat in terms of sales coupled with the strength of the political color.
Since the timing is just after finishing the tour with the album, in the middle of the stage, the numbers from the same album and the previous work “LIVES IN THE BALANCE” are shown with a rait, but the synths that were in those albums The odorless arrangement is surprisingly wonderful.
On top of that, Brown finally performed the title song of his next work “I’M ALIVE”, which was highly praised for “returning to its original form”.
In addition, the latter half of the 80’s number was also played acoustically, so the stage was composed as if you had woken up from your hesitation.
Rather, it was the charity acoustic show in 1990 that Brown raised the revival signal, and the second day was the coupling of mirrored recordings and soundboards from the master…what a luxury!
