Glenn Hughes’ solo visit to Japan, which was realized only twice in the 90’s. The excavation is a valuable original recording that allows you to experience the scene in real life.
“February 9, 1997: Shinjuku Liquid Room Performance” is imbued with this work. It is a powerful audience recording. Glenn, who made a comeback in the 90’s, seems to have visited Japan many times, but in reality, his solo visit to Japan is extremely valuable. To explain its meaning, let’s look back on Glen’s history of coming to Japan.

This is Glen’s history of visiting Japan to date. Of the 8 and 33 performances, about half (4 times and 18 performances) came to Japan in combination with Joe Lynn Turner. The first solo visit to Japan in 1994 was left on the official “BURNING JAPAN LIVE”, but this work is a live-in-Japan era of the next “ADDICTION”. It’s a good time to touch, so let’s introduce the schedule at that time.

This work, which conveys the precious scene of 1997, is a closed room audience with plenty of club mood. Anyway, it’s close … it’s narrow. It’s a spatial recording with a sense of air in terms of timbre, but the sound is clinging to the core. Shortly after the sound spreads, the vivid core reaches the ear without a time lag. When he first came to Japan in 1994, he was a large group of 6 people, but in 1997 he was a quartet. Therefore, the gap is felt exactly, and each sound has a vivid outline.
The closed-door sound depicts a full show that is different from “BURNING JAPAN LIVE”. First, let’s organize from the set.

…… And it looks like this. I usually put a “★” mark on songs that I can’t listen to in the official work, but if I do that in this work, it will be full of marks. This time, on the contrary, “*” is added to the songs that are covered, and the other songs are the focus of attention. In other words, except for the four songs, it was released for the first time in Japan, but the most delicious one is probably “You Fool No One”. Needless to say, it’s a masterpiece of “BURN”, but I didn’t play it in the IV period Purple … I mean, I didn’t play it in the whole Purple family (WHITESNAKE played it in 2015). After that). As mentioned above, the Shinjuku performance of this work is the first day of 1997, so it is a genuine site for the first public release in Japan.
And the performance of spinning such a set is also excellent. In 1994, it was a stylized beauty sound by a special band in which the members of EUROPE also participated, but this work is Glen’s regular band. The guitar is also JJ Marsh (at that time Joakim Marsh) who has been a partner for many years, and the keyboard is not Hammond but electric piano and it is gorgeous. Morgan Ogren is one of the most interesting people to choose from. He is a drummer who was also active in the Zappa band, and is a genius known for co-starring with his family Steve Vai and Terry Posio. He is now a master of the reunion of the Nordic progressive rock hero KAIPA. And the biggest thing to listen to is “You Fool No One”, which falls from Ogren’s solo. It’s not just a famous / rare song, it’s a fierce jam where the whole band hits phrases. It’s a highlight that’s hot and hot for over 10 minutes.
Since 2000, when he repeatedly visited Japan in combination with Joe in 1994, which was based on the EUROPE network, Glenn’s performances in Japan were all “former DEEP PURPLE”. Among them, 1997 was a very valuable Japan tour where “Glen’s unique Japanese performance” was unfolded. This work is a masterpiece where you can fully enjoy the scene. The first live album that transferred the sound sucked by the original DAT master to the subtleties. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

90年代に２回だけ実現したグレン・ヒューズのソロ来日。その現場をリアル体験できる貴重なオリジナル録音が発掘です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1997年２月９日：新宿リキッドルーム公演」。その強力オーディエンス録音です。90年代に復活を果たしたグレンは何度も来日しているようなイメージもありますが、実はソロ来日は非常に貴重。その意味をご説明するためにも、今回はグレンの来日史から振り返ってみましょう。

これが現在までのグレンの来日史。８回・33公演のうち、約半分（４回・18公演）がジョー・リン・ターナーとのコンビ来日でした。1994年のソロ初来日は公式『BURNING JAPAN LIVE』にも残されましたが、本作はその次となる『ADDICTION』時代のライヴ・イン・ジャパンなのです。なかなか触れる機会の時期ですので、ここで当時の日程もご紹介しておきましょう。

貴重な1997年の現場を伝える本作は、クラブ・ムードたっぷりの密室オーディエンス。とにかく近い……と言いますか、狭い。音色的には空気感もある空間録音なのですが、その鳴りが芯にまとわりつく感覚。鳴りが広がる間もなくディテールまで鮮やかな芯がタイムラグなしに耳元に届くのです。1994年の初来日では６人編成の大所帯でしたが、1997年はカルテット。そのため、スキマもきっちりと感じられ、１音１音が輪郭も鮮やかに浮かび上がるサウンドなのです。
その密室感サウンドで描かれるのは、『BURNING JAPAN LIVE』とは様変わりしたフルショウ。まずは、セットから整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。普段なら公式作で聴けない曲に「★」印を付けるのですが、本作でそれをやると印だらけになってしまう。今回は逆で被っている曲に「＊」をつけ、それ以外の曲が注目なわけです。つまり、４曲以外は日本初公開だったわけですが、中でも美味しいのが「You Fool No One」でしょう。言わずと知れた『BURN』の名曲ですが、第IV期パープルでも演奏しなかった……と言いますか、パープル・ファミリー全部でも演奏してこなかった（WHITESNAKEが演奏したのも2015年になってから）。上記の通り、本作の新宿公演は1997年の初日ですから、正真正銘、日本初公開の現場なのです。
そして、そんなセットを紡ぐパフォーマンスも絶品。1994年はEUROPEの面々も参加した特別バンドによる様式美サウンドだったわけですが、本作はグレンのレギュラー・バンド。ギターも長年に渡って相棒となるJJ・マーシュ（当時はヨアキム・マーシュ）ですし、キーボードもハモンドではなくエレピ主体で煌びやか。そんな中で面白い人選なのがモルガン・オーグレン。ザッパ・バンドでも活躍していたドラマーで、ファミリーであるスティーヴ・ヴァイやテリー・ポジオとの共演でも知られる奇才。現在では北欧プログレの英雄KAIPAの再結成にも名を連ねている名手です。そして最大の聴きどころは、オーグレンのソロから雪崩れ込む「You Fool No One」。単に有名／レア曲というだけでなく、バンド全員がフレーズをぶつけ合う激しいジャムに発展。10分以上に渡って熱く熱く盛り上がるハイライトなのです。
EUROPE人脈を土台にした1994年、ジョーとのコンビで来日を繰り返した2000年以降……思えば、グレンの来日公演は「元DEEP PURPLE」が色濃いものばかりだった。その中であって、1997年は「グレンらしい日本公演」が繰り広げられた貴重極まるジャパン・ツアーでした。本作は、その現場を密着感たっぷりに味わえる大傑作。オリジナルDATマスターが吸い込んでいたサウンドを機微の機微まで移し替えた初登場ライヴアルバム。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
