Recently, Taper, who calls himself Two Of Us, has released the sound source he was recording on the site to please enthusiasts. Perhaps Elvis Costello was my favorite, I uploaded multiple recordings of the audience that captured his stage. Among them, the one that was by far the most valuable and had excellent sound quality was the sound source of the Meriwether Post Pavilion in Colombia on August 20, 1989.
Costello of this year will be more successful than ever due to the big hits of the first album “SPIKE” and the single “Veronica” after transferring to Warner, but initially the record company Because I had just transferred, I spent the whole year on solo singing tours due to cost issues. However, in response to the big hit, a tour with the band was carried out in the United States from August for only one month.
The band formed at this time was Ludo 5. This group has a strong impression that it served as the backing for Costello on the tour accompanying the next work “MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE”, but it is said that it was actually formed in 1989. However, for the above reasons, the activity period of the same year is extremely short, and even enthusiasts tend to overlook the original Ludo 5 tour.

Not only that, the tour with Ludo 5 in 1989 also had the problem that there were few sound sources with excellent sound quality. Not only was the tour period short, but it was also a manifestation of the problem that the big hit of “SPIKE” increased the number of fans and the taper could not secure a good position. The fact that there were no items for this short tour probably reflected that situation. In that respect, the sound quality of the Colombian performance released by Two Of Us this time is very good, which is a level that can be released on a press CD.
First of all, it is an audience recording with very clear sound quality, and it perfectly conveys the rich sound of Ludo 5, which is a large band that gathers skilled musicians. In fact, there was a real problem that in 1989 we could only tour in the United States, partly because of the high cost of hiring a big family and well-known musician. Later, Costello himself recalled, “It cost money at that time.”
However, it was only accompanied by the musicians who participated in the recording of the album, and as a result, the gorgeous sound of pop and sophisticated “SPIKE” became an extremely valuable tour that was shown on the stage in 1989. is.

After all, the song “Miss Macbeth” from the same album was played live only at this time, and “… This Town …”, which was the opening of the album, was performed by the band again. Only this short tour. And it is said that this tour was the only one in which Costello’s representative song “Veronica” was performed by a band in 1989 due to a big hit. In addition, it is a wonderful live version that reproduces the lively atmosphere of the album version on stage. It is also a valuable document to understand that it is being played in an encore even though it is a new song at that time, as proof of its big hit.
And the original Ludo 5 is the percussionist Michael Blair who also participated in the album, and Steven Soles (a core member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Review) who met in the video recording of Roy Orbison in 1987. The live performance of the famous song “Veronica” stands out because he acted as the backing chorus. The first title from a super valuable tour that makes you want to call it the original “SPIKE” live is released with the best audience recording. There is no doubt that you will be particularly impressed by the band performance of the real-time “Veronica”!

最近Two Of Usを名乗るテーパーが自身の録音していた音源をサイト上に公開してマニアを喜ばせています。中でもエルヴィス・コステロがお気に入りだったのか、彼のステージを捉えたオーディエンス録音に関しては複数アップロード。それらの中でずば抜けて貴重で、なおかつ音質も素晴らしかったのが1989年8月20日のコロンビア、メリウェザー・ポスト・パビリオンの音源。
この年のコステロはワーナーに移籍して第一弾であったアルバム「SPIKE」とシングル「Veronica」の大ヒットによって、それまで以上に大きな成功を収めることになるのですが、当初はレコード会社を移籍したてということもあり、費用の問題から一年を通してソロの弾き語りツアーに費やしたのです。ところが先の大ヒットを受け、8月からアメリカで一か月だけバンドを従えたツアーが敢行されました。
この時に結成されたバンドこそルード5。このグループは次作「MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE」に伴うツアーでコステロのバックを務めた印象が強いのですが、実は89年に結成されていたという。しかし先の理由から同年の活動期間は極めて短く、マニアでもオリジナルのルード5ツアーに関しては見過ごされがちかと。

それだけではありません、89年のルード5とのツアーは音質の秀でた音源が少ないという問題もあったのです。これはツアーの期間が短かっただけでなく、「SPIKE」の大ヒットによってファンが増え、テーパーが良好なポジションを確保できなかったという問題の現れでもありました。この短期ツアーのアイテムが一切存在していなかったのもそういった状況を反映していたのでしょう。その点、今回Two Of Usが公開してくれたコロンビア公演は音質が非常に良く、それこそプレスCDで出してもおかしくないレベル。
まず大変にクリアーな音質のオーディエンス録音であり、腕利きミュージシャンを集めた大所帯バンドであるルード5の豊かなサウンドをばっちり伝えてくれる。実のところ大所帯かつ名のあるミュージシャンを雇ったことでかさんだ費用のせいもあり、89年にはアメリカでしかツアーを行えなかったという現実的問題があったのです。後にコステロ自身も「あの時はお金がかかった」と振り返っていたほど。
しかしアルバムのレコーディングにも参加したミュージシャン達を従えただけのことはあり、結果としてポップで洗練された「SPIKE」のゴージャスなサウンドが89年のステージで披露された極めて貴重なツアーとなったのです。

何しろ同アルバム収録曲「Miss Macbeth」がライブ演奏されたのは実質的にこの時だけですし、アルバムのオープニングを飾った「…This Town…」がバンドで披露されたのがまたこの短期ツアーだけ。そして極めつけは大ヒットによってコステロの代表曲「Veronica」が89年にバンドで演奏されたのもこのツアーだけという。おまけにアルバム・バージョンの快活な雰囲気をステージで再現してくれた素晴らしいライブ・バージョンでもある。その大ヒットぶりを証明するように、当時の新曲ながらアンコールで演奏されているという扱いが解るのも貴重なドキュメント。
そしてオリジナルのルード5はアルバムにも参加していたパーカッショニストのマイケル・ブレア、さらに87年のロイ・オービソンの映像収録で知り合ったスティーブン・ソールズ（ボブ・ディランのローリング・サンダー・レビューの中核メンバー）がバックコーラスを務めたことで名曲「Veronica」のライブ演奏がより際立っています。もはやオリジナル「SPIKE」ライブと呼びたくなる超貴重なツアーから初めてのタイトルが極上オーディエンス録音にてリリース。特にリアルタイム「Veronica」のバンド演奏には感動させられること間違いなし！
