Alongside TMOQ, Rubber Dubber released a series of masterpieces as a pioneer of underground labels in the early 1970s. At that time, the secret of their popularity was the continuous recording of the latest concerts with surprisingly high sound quality, but the one that stood out among the masterpieces released by the same label was “EUROPEAN TOUR LIVE 1970”. Until then, the items released by the same label were basically records of concerts in the United States (recorded by themselves), but for this title, they released the latest overseas concerts exceptionally. It was literally a problematic work that gave a big shock to maniacs.
In addition, the sound quality is very good, and the surprisingly on sound image is of such a quality that there is no recording that surpasses this in the Rolling Stones 1970 European tour. The impact that the latest overseas performance of the Stones was released in the United States with such sound quality greatly stimulated TMOQ, and in the end, the Rubber Dubber board, which was a two-disc set, was put together into a single “EUROPEAN TOUR 1970 (Complete Released a copy board called On One Disc). Rubber Dubber and TMOQ, who were angry about it, had a discussion (in the end).
This is also an episode that speaks to the greatness of the Rubber Dubber board, but even in the “A PIG’S TALE” book released two years ago, it was once again stated that the TMOQ board was a copy board.
The problem is that this sound source is still … or rather, it can only be heard on the Rubber Dubber board LP forever. Releasing an artist’s latest performance in the early 1970s was far more risky than it is today, where the passage of time has made it into the public domain. The Rubber Dubber was, unfortunately, an early example that paid the price. They were about to be caught in September 1971, and when they fled, they disposed of the master tapes to destroy the evidence. With this, the situation that all the releases of the same label are heard only on the master board is confirmed.
For that reason, there is no other way than to obtain the master of “EUROPEAN TOUR LIVE 1970” or copy it from the master, but the title “MIDNIGHT RAMBLERS” was released at the dawn of the CD era. However, it was heavily noise-reduced to hide the poor quality of the early LP, and it was far from the definitive version. After that, the CD version was almost never released due to the quality of the record, but in the 21st century when technology evolved, the VGP label tried twice to make it into a CD. Among them, “TWO GREAT ALBUMS CHEAP” was considered the best.
However, in 2023, 20 years after its release, it is clear that it is now possible to transfer a higher quality Rubber Dubber board. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” responded to the wishes of enthusiasts around the world. That solid skill has been proven when the definitive transfer of the same Rubber Dubber masterpiece “LIVE AT THE LOS ANGELES FORUM 9-4-70” was recorded as a bonus on the same label’s “LIVE ON BLUEBERRY HILL”.
In fact, the finish is a word that is wonderful. The Rubber Dubber board, which cannot be said to be of good quality, has been transferred beautifully so far. All of the already-launched boards mentioned above were more or less equalized for noise concealment, and as a result, the freshness of the original sound source was sacrificed. However, this time, without unnecessary equalization, we have achieved an unprecedented clean and realistic sound on CD by carefully removing noise.
In the first place, what was offered this time was the separate jacket version, which is likely to be the earliest lot of “EUROPEAN TOUR LIVE 1970”. Rubber Dubber had released all items as a double-disc set. It was shipped as a foldout. Although the number of existing ones is small, there are certainly individuals of this peculiar jacket.
Anyway, the transfer this time, especially the sound of Charlie’s snare, is a different dimension compared to the already released board, and furthermore, the LP based on “TWO GREAT ALBUMS CHEAP” was not in good condition. Love In Vain” intro was cloudy, but this time it was clear without such problems. And by recording as much as possible without crossfading each side of the record, the information recorded on the board is recorded without leaking. Besides, noise does not enter, too. An astonishing clean transfer that can only be done in 2023.
Suitable for this “GRAF ZEPPELIN” finish, the jacket is also a CD size replica of the stamp cover that has an impressive sense of Rubber Dubber. Vintage Rubber Dubber, which captures the performances unique to Europe 70 such as that super cool “Roll Over Beethoven” and Keith’s intro “Live With Me” with a powerful sound image, is vacuum packed with amazing cleanness!
TMOQと並んで1970年代初頭のアンダーグラウンド・レーベルの先駆けとして名作を連発したRubber Dubber。当時としては驚くほど高音質な最新コンサート録音を連発したことが人気の秘密でしたが、同レーベルからリリースされた名盤の中でも異彩を放ったのが『EUROPEAN TOUR LIVE 1970』。それまで同レーベルがリリースしてきたアイテムは基本アメリカ国内のコンサートの記録（自分たちで録音してきた）だったのですが、本タイトルに関しては例外的に海外の最新コンサートをリリースしてみせたという点でマニアに大きな衝撃を与えた文字通りの問題作でした。
おまけに音質が非常に良く、その驚くほどオンな音像はローリング・ストーンズ1970年ヨーロッパ・ツアーにおいてこれを超える録音が未だに無いほどのクオリティ。アメリカにおいてストーンズの最新海外公演がこれほどの音質でリリースされたという衝撃はTMOQをも大いに刺激することになり、果ては二枚組だったRubber Dubber盤を一枚にまとめた『EUROPEAN TOUR 1970 (Complete On One Disc)』というコピー盤をリリース。それに怒ったRubber DubberとTMOQの間で話し合いが行われるという事態にまで発展（結局うやむやに）。
それもまたRubber Dubber盤の偉大さを物語るエピソードなのですが、一昨年リリースされた『A PIG’S TALE』本にいてもTMOQ盤が改めてコピー盤である旨が記されていました。
問題はこの音源が未だに…というより永遠にRubber Dubber盤LPでしか聞けなくなってしまったということ。1970年代初頭に当時のアーティストの最新公演をリリースするということは、時間の経過によってパブリック・ドメインが成立する現在とは比べ物にならないほどリスクを伴うものだった。その代償を払わされる初期の例が不幸にもRubber Dubberだったのです。彼らは71年の9月に摘発されそうになり、逃亡の際にマスターテープの数々を証拠隠滅すべく処分してしまったのでした。これで同レーベルのリリースはすべて原盤でしか聞かれないという状況が確定。
それだけに『EUROPEAN TOUR LIVE 1970』も原盤を手に入れる、あるいは原盤からコピーするしか道がない訳ですが、CD黎明期にさっそく『MIDNIGHT RAMBLERS』というタイトルがリリース。ところが初期LP特有の盤質の悪さを隠蔽すべくこってりとノイズ・リダクションを施したものであり、決定版とは程遠いものでした。その後も盤質が仇となってCDバージョンがほとんどリリースされなかったのですが、テクノロジーの進化した21世紀を迎えてVGPレーベルが二度に渡ってCD化にトライ。中でも『TWO GREAT ALBUMS CHEAP』がベストとされたのでした。
しかし、そのリリースからも20年の歳月が経過した2023年、今ならもっと上質なRubber Dubber盤のトランスファーが可能であることは明白。そんな世界中のマニアの思いに応えてくれたのが「GRAF ZEPPELIN」。その確かな手腕は同じRubber Dubberの名盤『LIVE AT THE LOS ANGELES FORUM 9-4-70』の決定版トランスファーを同レーベルの『LIVE ON BLUEBERRY HILL』でボーナス収録してみせた際に実証済み。
実際その仕上がりは素晴らしいの一言。お世辞にも盤質が良いとは言えないRubber Dubber盤をよくぞここまで奇麗にトランスファーしてくれたものです。先に挙げた既発盤らはどれも大なり小なりノイズ隠蔽のイコライズが施されており、結果として音源本来が持つ鮮度が犠牲となっていた。ところが今回は余計なイコライズを施すことなく、ひたすら丁寧にノイズを取り除くという細やかな作業によってかつてないクリーンかつリアルな音のCD化を実現。
そもそも今回提供されたのは『EUROPEAN TOUR LIVE 1970』の中でも最初期ロットの可能性が高いセパレート・ジャケ・バージョン。すべてのアイテムを二枚組でリリースしていたRubber Dubberでしたが、本作を出す際にはフォールドアウト・カバーが調達できず、代わりにシングル・カバー二つを布張りの背でくっつけた急造フォールドアウトで出荷したのでした。現存数は少ないですが、確かにこの特異なジャケの個体が存在します。
それはともかく今回のトランスファー、特にチャーリーのスネアの響きなどは既発盤と比べて別次元ですし、さらに『TWO GREAT ALBUMS CHEAP』は元にしたLPの状態が良くなかったのでしょう、静かに始まる「Love In Vain」のイントロが濁っていましたが、今回はそうした問題もなく澄んだ状態。そしてレコード各面をクロスフェイドさせず、敢えて可能な限り収録することで盤面に記録された情報も寸分漏らさず収録。なおかつノイズも入らない。正に2023年だからこそできた驚愕のクリーン・トランスファー。
この「GRAF ZEPPELIN」入魂の仕上がりに相応しく、ジャケットもRubber Dubberならではのセンスが印象的なスタンプカバーをCDサイズに縮小レプリカ。あの超カッコイイ「Roll Over Beethoven」やキースのイントロから始まる「Live With Me」といったヨーロッパ70ならではの演奏を迫力の音像で捉えたビンテージRubber Dubberを驚異のクリーンさにて真空パック！
