Elton John in 1989 gained a foothold in the revival of “SLEEPING WITH THE PAST,” which won first place in the UK for the first time in 15 years. An original recording that allows you to experience the scene at its best is newly discovered. This is the birth of a hidden treasure album in which Eric Clapton also jumps in and participates.
What is sealed in this work is “October 7, 1989 Madison Square Garden (hereinafter MSG) performance”. It is the excellent audience recording. Elton at that time was a record-breaking hit not only for “SLEEPING WITH THE PAST” but also for Greatest Hits “THE VERY BEST OF”. It was beginning to show momentum to wipe out the temporary slump at once. First, let’s look back on the schedule at that time and confirm the position of the show.

● 1989
・ July 28-August 27: North America # 1 (21 performances)
“August 29,” SLEEPING WITH THE PAST “released”
・ August 29-October 18: North America # 2 (28 performances) ← ★ Coco ★
● 1990
・ January 27-March 3: Oceania (23 performances)
・ May 18-20: Atlantic City (3 performances)
“October 1st” THE VERY BEST OF “released”

This is the whole picture of “SLEEPING WITH THE PAST TOUR 1989/1990”. Until June 1989, the content was renewed with “REG STRIKES BACK TOUR” from July. On the contrary, the tour activity in 1990 has ended above, and there will be a blank until “THE ONE” in 1992, probably due to treatment such as alcoholism. The main part of such “SLEEPING WITH THE PAST TOUR” is the US Open tour in 1989, and this work is the 23rd performance of “North America # 2” which is the final stage. MSG has been performing for 5 consecutive nights, and this work was recorded on the last day.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed show, is a shockingly exquisite audience recording. It is an original recording that will be released for the first time by this work, but anyway, it is fresh, neat and clear. As expected, the MSG at the large venue (?), Which is famous for its taper crying, does not have zero distance and close contact, but the air is transparent, and the core that penetrates the center is as vivid as a laser beam, and the details. Is also shining brilliantly. Although it also sucks in the sound of the hall, it adds depth and dynamism to the performance and singing voice.
The sound is not like MSG, which is said to be difficult for Tokyo Dome, but the feeling of the scene is definitely MSG. The sea of great cheers that filled the vast venue is wide, and the joy that springs from each song sways to the right and left. As a matter of fact, this work has no mysteriously close voice and Elton’s singing voice takes control of everything, but the loud cheers that can be heard faintly over there casually produce a spectacle. That’s the type of great recording.
And what is drawn with that dynamic sound is the precious full show of “SLEEPING WITH THE PAST TOUR”. The time is a little off, but the official video “LIVE IN BARCELONA” is memorable when it comes to live performances in the revival era. Let’s organize the set while comparing here.

* Note: The “★” mark is a song that cannot be seen in the official video “LIVE IN BARCELONA”.

… And it looks like this. Elton has a masterpiece that can’t be played all the time, but here too, he behaves as a big hit song of each era. Among them, the new songs of “SLEEPING WITH THE PAST” are unique to this period. Of course, he also played “Sacrifice”, which became the first single in the UK to become the No. 1 single and became a resurrection signal, but the other three songs “Sleeping With the Past”, “Healing Hands” and “Stones Throw From Hurtin'” Limited song because of this tour. Also, even in the 70’s classics, “Island Girl” will not be played at the end of this tour, and “Harmony” will be revived for the first time in 9 years, but it will be a rare song that will be sealed for the next 10 years. ..
And, after all, the must-listen is “Rocket Man”, which is shown to the big lath. Eric Clapton appears here and listens to a gorgeous co-star, which is amazing. When Elton says “I’ll introduce you to a friend”, the venue is about “Who is it?”, But as soon as he says “Eric Clapton!”, A loud cheer like the sound of the earth explodes. After that, a big chorus will continue to occur, Clapton’s unique tone will be too delicious, and the long and long interplay will be hot and exciting. It is one of the biggest highlights of this work, which is very fulfilling in both quality and quantity.
A large group of famous songs, clear sounds that are not like MSG, and Clapton involved. It is a must-listen and must-have live album at every point. An original treasure recording that can only be heard in this work. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

★ Excellent audience recording of “October 7, 1989 Madison Square Garden Performance”. The original recording for the first time, just fresh, neat and clear. The air is transparent, and the core that penetrates the center is as vivid as a laser beam, and the details are shining. You can also enjoy “Rocket Man”, which is full of blockbuster songs, and has a hot interplay with the rare new songs of “SLEEPING WITH THE PAST” and guest co-star Eric Clapton.

★★ Recording by a Japanese taper who went to the United States. The sound source of this performance itself has appeared for the first time in history! !!

当時のエルトンは『SLEEPING WITH THE PAST』だけでなく、グレイテスト・ヒッツ『THE VERY BEST OF』も記録的な大ヒット。

《8月29日『SLEEPING WITH THE PAST』発売》
《10月1日『THE VERY BEST OF』発売》

これが“SLEEPING WITH THE PAST TOUR 1989/1990”の全体像。

もちろん、初めてシングル全英シングルNo.1に輝いて復活の狼煙となった「Sacrifice」も演奏していますが、他3曲「Sleeping With the Past」「Healing Hands」「Stones Throw From Hurtin’」はこのツアーだからこその限定曲。
