Elton John in 1974 was in the middle of a big heyday. Introducing a soundboard album that allows you to fully experience the Christmas concert, which is not an exaggeration to say that it is a symbol of that.
The Christmas concert was held in “London, December 24, 1974”. It is a sound board recording recorded at the traditional famous venue “Hammersmith Odeon”. This show is also known to have been broadcast on the BBC’s famous program “THE OLD GRAY WHISTLE TEST”, and reigned as a representative video of 1974. The highest quality version “THE OLD GRAY WHISTLE TEST 1974: REBROADCAST 2021 (Uxbridge 1563)” rebroadcast at the end of last year is also new to my memory. That’s why it’s not so long now, but let’s review the schedule at that time just in case.

This is Elton John in 1974. The Hammersmith performance of this work was not only Christmas Eve, but also the final performance to conclude the climax of the astronomical blockbuster of “GREATEST HITS”.
As mentioned above, this show was broadcast as a special Christmas program for “THE OLD GRAY WHISTLE TEST”, but the actual concert was more than 2 hours, while the broadcast frame was 1 hour. Moreover, it was necessary to have a production scene such as the introduction of a program, and more than half of the show was cut. After that, a long professional shot at the editing stage was excavated, but it was still about 80 minutes. On the other hand, this work is a complete recording of a full show of about 2 hours and 15 minutes with only audio.
Basically, it is for TV broadcasting, and although it is hard to say that the rough mix that seems to be excavated is official grade, the feeling of close contact is tremendous because it is a sound board. And above all, the enormously swollen masterpieces are overwhelming. Let’s organize the set while comparing it with the broadcast version here.

…… And it looks like this. Even in the long version of Pro Shot, there were 4 more songs than the broadcast version, but in this work, 9 songs have been added. And it’s not just a lot. TV broadcasting is from the middle of the show, and TV recording starts from the middle. In this work, the BBC’s ration, which begins recording, is also recorded, and the scene where the mood of the show changes is also realistically captured.
Also, in the sense that it is a live album with plenty of famous songs, you can listen to it as a full album with more volume than “HERE AND THERE”. Nowadays, “HERE AND THERE” itself has been increased to a 2-CD set, but you can enjoy 6 songs in the repertoire that you can’t even listen to.
It is a “complete album of symbolic pro shots” and a “soundboard album beyond HERE AND THERE”. In other words, it can be enjoyed as a “live version of GREATEST HITS” … It is a full live album of the heyday that you can get full with any listening method. It is one of the indispensable items in the Elton collection, and it is a high-class item that can be simply used as a treasure trove of famous songs. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

一大全盛の真っ直中にいた1974年のエルトン・ジョン。その象徴と言っても過言ではないクリスマス・コンサートを完全体験できるサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そのクリスマス・コンサートが開かれたのは「1974年12月24日ロンドン」。伝統の名会場“ハマースミス・オデオン”で記録されたサウンドボード録音です。このショウはBBCの名物番組“THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST”で放送された事でも知られ、1974年を代表する名映像として君臨。昨年末に再放送された最高画質盤『THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST 1974: REBROADCAST 2021（Uxbridge 1563）』も記憶に新しいところです。それだけに今さらではありますが、やはり念のため当時のスケジュールもおさらいしておきましょう。

これが1974年のエルトン・ジョン。本作のハマースミス公演はクリスマス・イヴというだけでなく、『GREATEST HITS』の天文学的大ヒットに沸いていた絶頂の１年を締めくくる最終公演でもありました。
前述のように、このショウは“THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST”のクリスマス特番として放送されたわけですが、実際のコンサートが２時間以上だったのに対し、放送枠は１時間。しかも番組の導入等の演出シーンも必要であり、ショウの半分以上がカットされてしまいました。その後、編集段階の長尺プロショットも発掘されたものの、それでも約80分。それに対し、音声だけながら約２時間15分のフルショウを完全収録しているのが本作なのです。
基本的にはTV放送用ですし、いかにも発掘らしい荒いミックスはオフィシャル級とは言いがたいものの、サウンドボードだからこそのド密着感は絶大。そして何より、膨大に膨れあがった名曲群が圧倒的。ここで放送版と比較しながらセットを整理していきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。長尺版プロショットでも放送版より４曲多かったわけですが、本作ではさらに９曲も増量している。しかも、単に多いだけではない。TV放送はショウの中盤以降でして、途中からTV収録が始まるスタイル。本作では、収録が始まるBBCのンレーションも収録され、ショウのムードが切り替わるシーンもリアルに活写されているのです。
また、名曲たっぷりのライヴアルバムという意味では『HERE AND THERE』よりボリュームのあるフルアルバムという聴き方も出来る。現在では『HERE AND THERE』自体も２枚組CDに増量されているわけですが、そこでも聴けないレパートリーが６曲も楽しめるのです。
「象徴プロショットの完全版アルバム」であり、「HERE AND THERE超えのサウンドボード・アルバム」でもある。もっと言えば、「生演奏版のGREATEST HITS」としても楽しめる……どんな聴き方でもお腹いっぱいになれる全盛時代のフル・ライヴアルバムです。エルトン・コレクションに欠かせない１本であり、シンプルに名曲の宝庫としても特級の銘品。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にご堪能ください。
