ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN in 1983, who sent “Porcupine” to 2nd place in the UK and was in the midst of the great heyday. A sound board album that conveys the climax era is now available.
This work was recorded on “July 11, 1983 Glasgow Performance”. It is the stereo sound board recording. Speaking of 1983, the standard professional shot “ROCKPALAST 1983” is also familiar at our shop. First of all, let’s look back at the schedule at that time and check the position of the show.
・ January 15-February 3: UK # 1 (17 performances)
《“PORCUPINE” released on February 4》
・ February 10-March 19: Europe # 1 (21 performances) ← * ROCKPALAST 1983
・ March 26: Buffalo performance
・ March 29th / May 27th / June 20th: UK #2 (3 performances)
・ June 28-30: North America (3 performances)
・ July 2 + 3: Europe # 2 (2 performances)
・July 5-19: UK #3 (11 performances) ← Coco
・ August 6: Zonhofen performance
・ October 23-24: UK # 3 (3 performances)
・ November 12: Sint-Jans-Mohrenbeek performance
This is the 1983 ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN. The following year, 1984, a performance in Japan was also realized, but in 1983 (except for a few performances in North America), it was almost exclusively limited to Europe. In particular, he was biased towards his home country, England. The Glasgow performance of this work is also an act of such a home country tour. It was a concert that was the 5th performance of “UK # 3”. Speaking of the UK live in 1983, the Royal Albert Hall performance (hereinafter RAH) was formalized on the bonus disc of “OCEAN RAIN” Dela Eddie, but this work is also a week before that.
This show is also known for being broadcast on the radio, and its FM soundboard has become one of the standard. In fact, the sound is comparable to the official RAH soundboard. If the feeling of direct connection and the beautifully separated mix are vivid, the master freshness is tremendous. There is no deterioration such as noise or distortion, and it seems that the broadcast sound at that time flows directly from the speaker.
With such a quasi-official sound, the passionate performance of young ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, who opened the door to their heyday, is depicted. However, unfortunately, it is far from the full show because it is edited according to the broadcast frame of less than one hour. As mentioned above, it is also close to “ROCKPALAST 1983” and the official RAH sound board, so let’s check the concentration of the set while comparing it.
● Crocodiles (4 songs)
・All That Jazz / Rescue / Villiers Terrace / Do It Clean (*)
● Others (9 songs)
・Porcupine: Heads Will Roll / Porcupine / The Cutter
・Other: Simple Stuff (★)/Over The Wall/A Promise/Never Stop (★)/Silver (★)/The Killing Moon (★)
* Note: The “★” mark is the standard pro shot “ROCKPALAST 1983”, and the “*” mark is the song that could not be heard on the “OCEAN RAIN” bonus RAH sound board.
… and it looks like this. There are quite a few repertoires that were not in “ROCKPALAST 1983”, but without fear of misunderstanding, it feels like “RAH excerpt” and “another version with the same high tension”. Although you can enjoy “Do It Clean”, which is not on the bonus disc of “OCEAN RAIN”, this is familiar with single B-side tracks. Rather, the point is that you can enjoy it as a highlight of the show.
Although the permanent preservation press was postponed because it was an excerpt broadcast, the sound quality and the golden age performance itself are official cultural heritage. For enthusiasts, it is an official-compliant subtext that deeply enjoys the golden age, and for those who touch it for the first time in 1983, it is a masterpiece of a rich live album. A sound board album in which the raw voice of Ian McCulloch, who was still 24 years old, is poured into the brain. Please enjoy it to the fullest.
