[March 11 Johnnie Walker Show (2 songs + interview)] The first thing to appear is the FM sound board of “Johnnie Walker Show”. マイケル・マクドナルドも復帰しての再結成ツアーに沸いた1995年のTHE DOOBIE BROTHERS。その極上サウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
2021年現在、新型コロナ・パンデミックによって延期になっていた50周年ツアーも７月に開始されようとしていますが、そこでもマクドナルド復帰が話題となっています。そんな彼が最後にTHE DOOBIE BROTHERSと共演したのが1995年／1996年ツアー。本作は、そんな25年前のショウを極上クオリティで味わえるサウンドボード・アルバムなのです。
そんな本作に収められているのは２種類のロンドン・ライヴ。「1995年３月16日ウェンブリー・アリーナ公演」をメインに、その５日前に出演した名物番組“ジョニー・ウォーカー・ショウ”を追加収録したFMステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。この時の再結成ツアーは公式ライヴアルバム『ROCKIN’ DOWN THE HIGHWAY: THE WILDLIFE CONCERT』にも残されていますが、もちろん本作は別公演。その位置関係を整理するためにも、当時のスケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

これが1995年／1996年のTHE DOOBIE BROTHERS。マクドナルド復帰は「1995年初頭」と言われ、離脱のタイミングは「1996年の夏」とやや曖昧。上記はそれをツアー日程に当てはめたもの。多少時期が間違っている可能性もありますので、あまり信じないでいただきたいのですが、おおよその規模や流れはご理解いただけると想います。公式ライヴアルバム『ROCKIN’ DOWN THE HIGHWAY』は終盤「北米#3」で制作されたわけですが、それに対して本作のロンドン公演は序盤。特にメインのウェンブリー公演は「欧州」レッグ６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。本作は時系列に「３月11日ジョニー・ウォーカー・ショウ」→「３月16日ウェンブリー・アリーナ公演」で収録しています。

【３月11日ジョニー・ウォーカー・ショウ（２曲＋インタビュー）】
まず最初に登場するのは“ジョニー・ウォーカー・ショウ”のFMサウンドボード。クオリティは問答無用の極上で「完全オフィシャル級」とだけご理解板だければOK。そのサウンドで描かれる内容は、アンプラグドによる２曲「Long Train Runnin’」「Black Water」と、再結成ツアーに臨むインタビューです。

【３月16日ウェンブリー・アリーナ公演（11曲＋α）】
その後に始まるのが、本作の本編となるウェンブリー公演。こちらもFM放送された極上ステレオ・サウンドボードで、やはり完全オフィシャル級。実際、正真正銘のオフィシャル作『ROCKIN’ DOWN THE HIGHWAY』と並べて聴いても半歩も譲らない。完璧に姉妹作となり得るパーフェクト・クオリティです。ただしクオリティは公式作と同じでも（当然の事ながら）ショウ内容は異なる。ここで比較しながらセットも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。約１時間の放送枠に沿っているため、曲数ボリューム的には『ROCKIN’ DOWN THE HIGHWAY』に遠く及びませんが、その代わり公式作では聴けない再結成時代の代表曲「Dangerous」も楽しめます。そして何より、熱演ぶりが素晴らしい。前述したように本作は再結成ツアーのスタート直後。欧州ツアーの６公演目であり、ちょうどバンドのアンサンブルがこなれて全力運転に入ったばかりのタイミング。もちろんツアー疲れなど微塵もなく、再結成に沸くフレッシュな勢いがたっぷりと味わえるのです。
新型コロナの趨勢は予断を許さず、７月から本当に50周年ツアーが始まるかは神のみぞ知るところです。本作は、そんな今だからこそ一層眩しく輝くオフィシャル級の極上ライヴアルバムです。１日でも早く50周年ツアーの極上録音が届く事を願いつつ、今は本作を胸いっぱいにお楽しみください。
