“COME HELL OR HIGH WATER” is a video work depicting the last season of “DEEP PURPLE Ritchie”. The Japanese version of the laser disc version will be released as a gift.
Speaking of “COME HELL OR HIGH WATER”, it is a live work that symbolizes the “third second period” that was produced just before the second withdrawal of Ritchie Blackmore and announced after the withdrawal. The content is different between the CD version and the video version, and this work is for the video version. This is a multi-camera pro shot of “November 9, 1993 Birmingham Performance”. Speaking of 1993, there are many people who remember that Ritchie withdrew just before the performance in Japan and learned the news on the poster at the venue. First, let’s look back on the busy schedule and confirm the position of the show.

This is 1993’s DEEP PURPLE. Ian Gillan’s second return was in August 1992, but he began publicly in 1993. Ritchie suddenly announced his withdrawal after releasing the album “The Battle Rages On Purple” in the summer and completing 33 performances in Europe. In the above, “Germany” and “UK” are extracted and organized from the connected European Tour. As you can see, the CD version of “COME HELL OR HIGH WATER” was produced on the last day of the “Germany” tour, and the video version (this work) of Birmingham was produced on the last day of the “UK” tour (also the CD version). Only “Anyone’s Daughter” performed in Birmingham). In other words, it was the 5th performance from the end when Ritchie left.
Of course, this work shot at such a show is completely official. It’s not an archaeological level, it’s a gorgeous visual beauty with plenty of budget and effort. As a matter of fact, it has already been made into an official DVD, but this work is not a copy, but the original release version of 1994. It is precisely digitized from the Japanese version laser disc, which is the highest peak and has Japanese subtitles. However, the content is not so different from the DVD version, and it may be for those who say “By the way, I have not repurchased to DVD” or for enthusiasts who “I do not have a deck anymore but want to check the LD version”.
Anyway, the content drawn with super beautiful quality is the brave figure of “Hard Rock Ritchie” that is soaked in my heart now. Not only the take but also the songs are different between the CD version and the video version, so let’s organize them by comparing them with the CD version.

… And it looks like this. There are plenty of familiar major songs, but there are also delicious rare songs such as “Talk About Love”, “A Twist in the Tale” and “Anyone’s Daughter” played by Ritchie.
And after all, Ritchie in the era when he was playing HR regularly is cool. You can enjoy sharp phrases in any song (more than you felt at the time), but the biggest highlight is probably “Highway Star”. Ritchie did not appear even after the performance started, and the Strat was roaring only when the song progressed steadily and came to the guitar solo part. Actually, Ritchie, who hated shooting with a camera, forcibly started the show while refusing to appear, and when he thought, “It will come out when the song starts,” he didn’t come out. Ritchie is amazing because it makes you feel like a dramatic production. After that, Ritchie, who doesn’t like the camera, splashes a glass of water on it … It’s a legendary scene of Calijam. Ritchie is amazing, but DEEP PURPLE, who makes it into a work, is also very courageous.
And the point of this work is that interviews (other than Ritchie) are inserted between such live performances. Each member reveals his favorite album and talks about his future aspirations. Of course, even with the previous “Highway Star”, there are many sarcasms that say “The bad thing is Ritchie”, and Joe Lynn Turner, who is no longer in the mouth, is also sarcastic. The comment is interesting because it is the timing when I lost the key person.
Under such circumstances, what is interesting now is the memories of the 70’s. It’s not a new story, but there is a story about Ritchie becoming hepatitis. This week, DEEP PURPLE’s shock excavation album “QUEBEC 1972 feat. RANDY CALIFORNIA (Darker Than Blue 284)” with Randy California will be released, and it is exactly the memory of that time. Randy’s name doesn’t come up, though, and it’s sometimes confused with Giran’s hepatitis (Roger sang instead in October 1971 at another time), but the story behind that time was recorded. That’s why it’s a topic of “stuck” now.

Ritchie’s return to DEEP PURPLE is hopeless, and above all, Jon Lord is no longer there. This is an official masterpiece where you can witness the last moment of the “five golden people” who will never return. The “Highway Star” of the incident and the comments made at that time when the anger was vivid can be enjoyed with the highest quality. Please take this opportunity to thoroughly enjoy it.

「DEEP PURPLEのリッチー」最後の季節を描いた映像作品『COME HELL OR HIGH WATER』。その日本盤レーザーディスク・バージョンがギフト・リリース決定です。
『COME HELL OR HIGH WATER』と言えば、リッチー・ブラックモア二度目の脱退直前に制作され、脱退後に発表された「三度目の第二期」を象徴するライヴ作品。CD版と映像版で内容が異なっており、本作は映像版の方。「1993年11月９日バーミンガム公演」のマルチカメラ・プロショットです。1993年と言えば日本公演の直前にリッチーが脱退し、その報を会場の張り紙で知ったという想い出の方も多いことでしょう。まずは、そんな慌ただしい当時のスケジュールを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1993年のDEEP PURPLE。イアン・ギラン二度目の復帰は1992年８月でしたが、公に活動を開始したのは1993年になってから。夏場にアルバム『紫の聖戦』をリリースし、33公演の欧州ツアーをこなしたところでリッチーが突如脱退を表明しました。上記では、ひと繋がりの欧州ツアーから「ドイツ」と「英国」を抜き出して整理したもの。これをご覧の通り、『COME HELL OR HIGH WATER』CD版は「ドイツ」ツアーの最終日、映像版（本作）のバーミンガム公演は「英国」ツアーの最終日で制作されました（CD版も「Anyone’s Daughter」のみバーミンガム公演）。つまり、リッチーが脱退する最後から５公演目だったわけです。
そんなショウで撮影された本作は、もちろん完全オフィシャル級。それも発掘級ではなく、予算も手間もたっぷりと注がれたゴージャスな映像美です。実のところ、すでに公式DVD化も済んでいるのですが、本作はそのコピーではなく、1994年のオリジナル・リリース版。その最高峰にして日本語字幕も完備された日本盤レーザーディスクから精緻にデジタル化されたものです。ただし、DVD版と大きく内容が異なるわけでもなく、「そういえばDVDに買い直してない」といった方か「もうデッキがないけど、LD版を確認したい」というマニア向けかも知れません。
ともあれ超美麗なクオリティで描かれる内容は、今だからこそ胸に染みる「ハードロックなリッチー」の勇姿。CD版と映像版ではテイクだけでなく曲目も異なりますので、ここではCD版と比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。お馴染みの大代表曲もたっぷりではありますが、その中にこのツアーだけの「Talk About Love」「A Twist in the Tale」やリッチーが弾く「Anyone’s Daughter」といった美味しいレア曲も散りばめられている。
そして何と言っても、レギュラーでHRを演奏していた時代のリッチーがカッコイイ。どの曲でも（当時感じた以上に）キレのあるフレーズを楽しめますが、最大の見どころははやり「Highway Star」でしょう。開演してもリッチーは登場せず、ギターレスで曲がどんどん進んでギターソロのパートに来てやっと、あのストラトが轟く。実際にはカメラ撮影を嫌ったリッチーが出演を拒否する中でショウを強引にスタートさせ、「曲が始まったら出てくるだろう」と思ったら出てこないでヒヤヒヤ……という流れだったわけですが、それがまるでドラマティックな演出のようにキマッてしまうからリッチーは凄い。そして、その後もカメラが気にくわないリッチーがコップの水をぶっかける……もはや、カリジャムばりの伝説シーン。やらかすリッチーも凄いですが、シレッと作品化してしまうDEEP PURPLE側も大した度胸です。
そして、そんなライヴの合間合間には、（リッチー以外の）インタビューが挿入されているのも本作のポイント。各メンバーがお気に入りアルバムを明かしたり、今後の抱負を語ったり。もちろん、先の「Highway Star」にしても「悪いのはリッチーだ」と言わんばかりの嫌味が並びますし、今では口の端にも上らないジョー・リン・ターナーについてもチクリ。キーパーソンを失ったタイミングだからこそのコメントが興味深いのです。
そんな中で、今だからこそ面白いのが70年代の思い出話。特に目新しいネタではないのですが、その中でリッチーが肝炎になった話が出てくる。今週はランディ・カリフォルニア入りDEEP PURPLEの衝撃発掘アルバム『QUEBEC 1972 feat. RANDY CALIFORNIA（Darker Than Blue 284）』が登場しますが、まさにその時の記憶を掘り起こしているのです。もっともランディの名前は出てきませんし、ギランの肝炎と混同していたりもする（ロジャーが代わりに歌ったのは1971年10月で別の時です）のですが、当時の裏話は録音が登場した今だからこそ「刺さる」話題なのです。

リッチーのDEEP PURPLE復帰は望むべくもなく、何よりジョン・ロードはすでにいない。もう二度と戻ることのない“黄金の５人”最後の刹那を目撃できるオフィシャル名作です。事件の「Highway Star」も、怒りも生々しい当時だからこそのコメントも、極上クオリティで楽しめる１枚。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりとご堪能ください。
