以上の5回が確認されています。ツアーウォームアップだった「6月11日ニューヨーク」と「6月29日ロンドン」はオーディエンス録音でご紹介してきましたが、本作「2002年7月18日モントルー公演」は、ステレオ・サウンドボード録音なのです。もちろん、ひと口に“サウンドボード”と言ってもピンキリ。特に、これまでの『HEATHEN IN NEW YORK(Uxbridge 551)』『HEATHEN IN LONDON(Uxbridge 554)』のクオリティは実に素晴らしかっただけに、ショボいライン録音なら用なしになるところでした。しかし、本作は“サウンドボード”の中でもピンの方。公式リリースも可能な極上品なのです。
実のところ、この録音自体はすでに既発が登場しているのですが、本作はボウイ研究の世界的大家が厳選したマスター。その研究ぶりは凄まじく、たとえ定番とされる音源でも、その眼鏡にかなったマスターのサウンドはひと味もふた味も違う。その確かな知識と選択眼は、『HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1973(Wardour-185)』『ROTTERDAM 1976(Wardour-186)』『GLASTONSTONBURY FESTIVAL 2000(Wardour-184)』といった傑作サウンドボード・タイトルでも証明済みです。本作もまた、その研究家に“これぞ!”の太鼓判を押されたものなのですが、今回はさらにマスタリングの監修も受けました。厳選を重ねたベスト・マスターではあっても、精緻に聴くとやや低音が薄く、パートごとに音圧差があった。そこは研究家も承知しており、細かく指導してくださったのです。その結果誕生した本作のサウンドは完璧。四の五の細かな言葉を重ねる意味もなく、「公式級」の3文字で片が付く堂々たる仕上がりを実現いたしました。
そのサウンドで描かれる名盤の再現演奏は、まさに「ステージ版LOW」の完成形。初演の『HEATHEN IN NEW YORK』では、ショウの冒頭からアルバムの曲順通りに演奏されましたが、再現を重ねるうちに「コンサートにそぐわない」と判断したのか、徐々に変化。本作では、フルセット+アンコールを通常コンサート形式で行い、2回目のアンコールでアルバム再現を行っています。その内容も変化しており、オリジナル・アルバムB面を解体し、「Warszawa」を冒頭に、「Art Decade」をA面の中盤に配置。さらに「Weeping Wall」を省略しているのです。アルバムを聴き倒したファン心理としては「せっかくなのだからアルバム通りに……」とも思ってしまうのですが、実際に聴いてみるとこの進化は大正解。荘厳な大作「Warszawa」はオープニングに相応しく、途中AB面に分断されない流れは、「本来こうあるべきだったのでは?」と思ってしまうほどに自然なのです。
