Demos Compilation 1986-1992
Kurt Cobain, who revolutionized the music world and passed away at the age of 27. A valuable demo album left behind in his short life is now available.
Included in this work is a treasure demo take that Kurt recorded at his home. It is a compilation album that collects all 47 takes (+α) over 2 hours 20 minutes 48 seconds from the age of 19 before NIRVANA was formed until just before his death. It was created by a world-famous enthusiast known for his NIRVANA research. Although there are familiar takes, it is the highest collection that has been reselected with the best existing takes. Let’s introduce each one individually.
The first to appear is the legendary demo “ILLITERACY WILL PREVAIL” by FECAL MATTER, which Kurt formed with Dale Clover of MELVINS. Formed in early 1985, they are a legendary unit known to have included Buzz Osborne and Greg Håkanson.
Although there was no formal work left, on Thanksgiving 1986 (probably March 30), a demo was produced at Kurt’s aunt Mari Earl’s house with a 4-track recorder. That’s this recording. Buzz and Greg did not participate in this demo, and Dale was also in charge of the bass and recorded with only two people with the cart. “Spank Thru” and “Downer”, which later became NIRVANA’s repertoire, were also played, and Chris Novoselic liked this “Spank Thru”, which led to the formation of NIRVANA.
riff demo
Another demo left by Kurt, who was 19 years old at the time. Recorded at his home, Kurt recorded various riff ideas all by himself. [DISC 1: 1987-1988 (7 takes)] The second half of disc 1 is a compilation of seven takes of Kurt’s home demos when he was 20/21. Although the detailed recording date is not known, Kurt sings while playing the guitar alone. At this point, the initial NIRVANA template has been completed, and not only the numbers discovered in the box “WITH THE LIGHTS OUT” but also later album songs such as “About A Girl” and “Polly” are played. [DISC 2: 1987-1988 (4 takes)] Instead, the beginning of Disc 2 is a continuation of Disc 1. Includes 4 takes of his home demo at the age of 20/21. The songs that you can’t hear even in “WITH THE LIGHTS OUT”, such as “Black and White Blues” and “Creation”, are delicious demos. [DISC 2: 1987 SKID ROW demo (14 takes)] The main part of Disc 2 is a demo from when they joined Chris Novoselic & Aaron Burkhart, but the band name was still in flux and called themselves “SKID ROW”. Kurt sings by himself, but it’s mostly a trio band practice.
“By this time, NIRVANA was completely gone.” Beginning with their debut single “Love Buzz”, their early repertoire will be shown one after another. It is no exaggeration to say “pre-BLEACH” with 14 takes. Under such circumstances, the last “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” is a song that cannot be heard even in “INCESTICIDE” and “WITH THE LIGHTS OUT”. It’s a playful style, but it’s a repertoire that makes you feel close to the band at the time. [DISC 2: Home demo after 1990 “BLEACH” (2 takes)] The 90’s have finally arrived, when they became the darlings of the next generation. Contains demos of “Verse Chorus Verse” in the summer of 1990 and “Pennyroyal Tea” in the winter of 1990, during the production of “NEVERMIND”. The former is played by Kurt, and the latter is played in a duo with Dave Grohl. [DISC 2: Home demo (3 takes) after 1991-1992 “NEVERMIND”] This is another demo before and after “NEVERMIND”. Three tracks recorded from the spring of 1991 when the album was completed to the fall of 1992 when the world was turned upside down. In addition to “Old Age” discovered in “WITH THE LIGHTS OUT”, he plays “Low Rider” and unreleased songs that have not been named yet. [DISC 2: Home demo after 1994 “IN UTERO” (1 take)] Furthermore, the times have progressed, and Kurt’s demo “Do Re Mi” in his later years is also included. After all, it is a treasured take where you can enjoy the intimate feeling of the singing voice several months before his death with a home recording. [DISC 2: Bonus track (1988)] This is the demo recorded at home, but this work also includes one take of a bonus track. It’s a valuable CM “Capitol Lake Jam” when the debut single “Love Buzz” had not yet been released.
A total of 48 takes. From the legendary unit FECAL MATTER to the last years just before his death, it is a 2-disc set that collects Kurt’s home recordings. Many hidden treasures that make you feel closer to the human “Kurt Cobain”, not the darling of the era that you can feel in albums and live performances. It is a branded product among branded products that you can experience them with the highest peak sound. Please take this opportunity to thoroughly enjoy it.
