A 1978 charity performance in which Chick Corea and Sunley Clark, who had just disbanded RETURN TO FOREVER, stood side by side, and many players participated. The original master who is an absolute master who conveys the special scene is now available.
“November 15, 1978 Santa Monica performance” is imbued in this work. It is a superb audience recording recorded by the great Mike Millard. Speaking of Chick’s mirrored recording, the masterpiece “LOS ANGELES 1978 (Uxbridge 1426)” with Herbie Hancock is also fresh in memory, but this work is about four months later. This time, the partners are Stanley, who is an ally of RETURN TO FOREVER, and Tony Williams, who was named in V.S.O.P. Bunny Brunel, who had collaborated on “SECRET AGENT” and “TAP STEP”, and famous singer Al Jarreau also participated as guests.
This work, which records such a show, is truly a masterpiece. Speaking of “Millard’s SANTA MONICA 1978”, Al Di Meola recording “Uxbridge 1703” and UK recording “Virtuoso 452”, which are famous as Millard’s masterpieces, were also at the same venue, but this work is rather Chick & Close to Harvey’s “LOS ANGELES 1978”. Especially at the beginning, there is a stiff feeling that seems to be due to tape deterioration, and I thought that Millard was a mistake in the brush, but by the time the performance actually started, the stiff feeling was quickly eliminated, and the sound became more and more glossy as the show progressed. It’s getting easier.
In the first place, even Chick & Harvey’s “LOS ANGELES 1978” is said to have been used as is for broadcasting (although it has not been confirmed). Although I do not assert that it is a masterpiece!
And the content of the show is as good as the sound. The show is roughly divided into two parts, and the first half shows “3 acoustic songs + 2 electric songs”. Bunny Brunel will participate from “Quiet Afternoon” of “SCHOOL DAYS” and will co-star until the end. Al Jarreau is participating only in “Summertime”, but he adds an accent to the show with a splendid scat. And, while skillfully interweaving the flow up to that point, it gradually changed colorfully from “acoustic → electric → guest participation → entering scat”. It is a show that makes you look forward to the next development.
Mike Millard, who made a name for himself with the legendary recordings of the Stones and ZEP. However, recent master excavation projects have revealed a variety of musical tastes. What surprised me even more than the huge amount of YES and GENESIS family recordings was their devotion to jazz/fusion. The collection is full-fledged in both quality and quantity, and is far from the dimension of “recorded by a rock bastard on a whim”, and Al Di Meola is now listed as the most promising candidate for Millard’s best work. This work is the latest in such a jazz / fusion collection, and it is also the Chick Corea / Stanley Clark edition at the same time and at the same venue as Di Meola’s super masterpiece. A signature product that allows you to enjoy the deep jazz taste of an absolute master. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1978年11月15日サンタモニカ公演」。偉人マイク・ミラードが記録した超極上オーディエンス録音です。チックのミラード録音と言えば、ハービー・ハンコックとの大傑作『LOS ANGELES 1978（Uxbridge 1426）』も記憶に新しいところですが、本作はその約４ヶ月後にあたる。今回の相棒はRETURN TO FOREVERの盟友スタンリーと、V.S.O.P.で名を挙げていたトニー・ウィリアムス。ゲストとして『SECRET AGENT』『TAP STEP』にも協力していたバニー・ブルネル、名シンガー：アル・ジャロウも参加していました。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、まさに極上の銘品。「ミラードのSANTA MONICA 1978」と言えば、ミラードの最高傑作と名高いアル・ディ・メオラ録音『Uxbridge 1703』やU.K.録音『Virtuoso 452』も同会場でしたが、本作はどちらかと言うとチック＆ハービーの『LOS ANGELES 1978』に近い。特に冒頭はテープ劣化と思しきゴワゴワ感もあり、さすがのミラードも筆の誤り……かと思いきや、実際に演奏が始まる頃にはゴワゴワ感がサッと解消され、ショウが進むほどに音がどんどん艶やかになっていくのです。
そもそもチック＆ハービーの『LOS ANGELES 1978』にしても（確認は取れていませんが）放送にそのまま使われたとの話もあるほどの名録音。「最高傑作だ！」と断言まではしないものの、誰かが断言しても異論を挟む気にはなれない超極上サウンドなのです。
そして、ショウ内容もサウンドに負けず極めつけ。ショウはざっくり二部構成になっており、前半は「アコースティック３曲＋エレクトリック２曲」を披露。『SCHOOL DAYS』の「Quiet Afternoon」からはバニー・ブルネルが参加し、そのまま最後まで共演します。アル・ジャロウが参加しているのは「Summertime」のみではありますが、見事なスキャットでショウにアクセントを加えています。そして、そこに至るまでの流れも素晴らしい硬軟を巧みに織り交ぜつつ、「アコースティック→エレクトリック→ゲスト参加→スキャット入り」と徐々にカラフルに変化。次の展開が楽しみになるようなショウなのです。
ストーンズやZEPの伝説録音によって名を成したマイク・ミラード。しかし、近年のマスター発掘事業によって多彩な音楽趣向も明らかになってきました。膨大なYES、GENESISファミリー録音にも増して意外だったのがジャズ／フュージョンへの傾倒。そのコレクションは質も量も本格的で「ロック野郎が気紛れで録った」という次元とはかけ離れ、現在ではアル・ディ・メオラがミラード最高作の最有力候補に挙げられるほどです。本作は、そんなジャズ／フュージョン・コレクション最新弾であり、ディ・メオラの超名作と同時期・同会場のチック・コリア／スタンリー・クラーク篇でもある。絶対名手のディープなジャズ趣味を味わえる銘品。どうぞ、心ゆくまで味わい尽くしてください。
