マイク・ミラード録音によるリバー・ツアーから始まり、ここのところ1985年の初来日公演が大好評となっている当店からのスプリングスティーン・タイトルですが、今回は久々に大人気ダークネス・ツアーからの音源がリリースされます。しかもミラード音源以降のリリースはどれも高音質揃いの極上音源ばかりがリリースされていますが、今回もその流れを汲んだ極上クオリティのオーディエンス録音なのです！
リリースされるのは1978年9月3日のサギノー公演。ダークネス・ツアーにおける頂点と言っても過言ではない9月のライブを収録したというだけでもファンであれば絶対に見逃せない音源だと断言いたしますが、その音質にはひたすら驚愕するばかり。モノラルのオーディエンス録音ながら一聴して圧倒されるほどのクリアネス。あまりにもクリアーなのでステレオ録音かと錯覚しそうなほどの鮮度にも驚きを禁じ得ません。それだけでも優良音源であることが保障されたようなものですが、音像がまた実にオンなバランス。どこをとっても見事な録音状態としか言いようがありません。

実はこのサギノー公演ですが、今から二十年前に「KILLERS IN THE SUN」というボックス入りタイトルにてリリースされた音源だったのです。その時点でも良好な音質に加えて9月のダークネス・ツアーならではの無敵な演奏内容と相まって、マニアの間では定評のあるライブとなっています。ところがそのボックスには当日続けざまに演奏されていた「Racing In The Street」と「Thunder Road」が二つのディスクに分断して収録されるというセンスの悪い編集がせっかくの音源を台無しにしていました。「狂気」のパートを二つのディスクに分けて収録したフロイドの「BLACK HOLES IN THE SKY」とか、この頃には実際のライブの構成を無視して収録するという無粋な編集がよくあったものです…。
そこでこの名音源の新たなリリースが待たれていたのですが「KILLERS IN～」ボックスの元になったと思われるロージェネレーション音源も古くから流通していたようです。ところが近年、JEMSがマスター・カセットを発掘してこの音源の究極のバージョンが現れました。今回のリリースは当然ながらJEMSのバージョンでのリリースを進めていたのですが、一応は比較参考用にと以前のロージェネ音源も入手してみました。ところが結果は…火を見るよりも明らか。JEMSの圧勝でした。文字通り一皮むけ、クリアネスと鮮度が大幅に増しています。「KILLERS IN～」をお持ちの方は手放す前に是非とも聴き比べてみてください、いよいよ手放したくなることでしょう（笑）。

そんな衝撃的とも言える音質の向上ぶりはここ最近の当店からのリリースに相応しいもの。しかしそれだけではありません、名演目白押しのダークネス・ツアー9月においてもこの日の演奏の自然にアッパーなテンションは最高！まだ二十代で力技に頼ることのないスプリングスティーンの飛ばし具合、そこにクリアーな音質と相まって快演が連発されます。過去に当店がリリースした9月最初のライブ「CHIMES OF FREEDOM」も実に素晴らしい演奏内容でしたが、その上を行く激しいテンション。何しろ中だるみしないどころか、ショウの中盤にこの日のピークを迎えてしまうのです。それがツアー中で唯一の演奏となった「(I Don’t Want To) Hang Up My Rock ‘N’ Roll Shoes」でしょう。これもマニアにはおなじみのカバーだと思われますが、明らかにぶっつけ本番なのに全然グダグダにならないとはどういうことなのか？これこそが9月というダークネス・ツアー無敵の一か月の証明です。
そしてこの日は録音者の周辺でさまざまな曲名を何度も叫ぶ観客がいることでも有名な音源ですが、曲名とは関係のない野次レベルの場面、さらにはあまりにしつこい場面（苦笑）に関してはカットしています（この辺りも「KILLERS IN～」と聴き比べるといいかもしれません）。しかしそこに違和感を覚えるどころか聴きやすく感じられること間違いなし。ボーナスには数日後のライブからサギノーでは演奏されなかったナンバー、さらにレアなカバーまで収録した至れり尽くせりの内容。とどめにいくつかの箇所にある微妙なピッチの変動もアジャストし、ダークネス・ツアー9月の名演かつ名音源が遂に究極の形で限定のプレスCDにてリリースとなります！
