The best masterpiece called “the strongest recording of the 70’s” is brushed up. Introducing a press 2CD that permanently preserves the highest peak updated sound by detailed mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”.

[The strongest recording ever to reign in the “King of the 70’s”] The strongest recording was recorded at “Fresno performance on September 22, 1978”. It is the transcendental audience recording. This recording is a special special for the Sabbath collector. This is because it is the “recording of the king” that shines at the top of all audience recordings left in the 70’s. Live albums have various values, such as recording time, rare songs, and realism, but the factor that makes this work “King” is the sound that is too transcendent. Completers who collect all kinds of sound sources unanimously declare that “this is the best sound”. Remember, it is neither “best of the day” nor “tour best”. “Best of original SABBATH” for 10 years. If you have noticed this article, you may remember Mike Millard’s new excavation “LONG BEACH ARENA 1975 (Zodiac 401)” that took the world by storm three years ago. However, there is no choice but to bend your knees before this great work.
This recording itself has been known for a long time, but the highest peak master appeared in 2011. The prestigious “Krow_Co” succeeded in excavating the original cassette. At our shop, it became a big standard as a press 3-disc set “SABBATH IN FRESNO (part of)”, but it was also a shock that it turned out that the sound source that had been distributed as a sound board was “actually an audience recording”. It was also an incident that (the sound that I thought was SBD) was upgraded further. This work is “Shin / Champion”, which has been refined by “GRAF ZEPPELIN” with fine mastering and updated the highest peak of such a live album of the champion.

[Updating the highest peak by GRAF ZEPPELIN mastering] The base of this work is not the existing “SABBATH IN FRESNO”… but the best master discovered 12 years ago and still unsurpassed. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has been mastering since returning to the original, and the work accuracy that can be said to be paranoid is definitely the highest ever. Pitch/phase correction that does not allow deviations of 1/1000th of a second, balance adjustment after band analysis, noise processing that cuts through the lines that do not affect the performance sound, etc. While faithful to the basics, we are polishing it with a level of obsession that goes beyond meticulousness.
Was it the phase correction that was particularly effective this time? In the previous version, the stereo feeling was slightly biased to the right, but this work is centered. In addition, the contours are sharp and sharp because the phase is strictly corrected. To be honest, it may be difficult to understand if you do not play it alternately with the existing one, but even if you do not compare it, you will feel that “I do not know the reason, but somehow the power is increasing”. Even if you don’t have to forcefully increase the sound pressure, if you maximize the accuracy of the original sound, the vividness will naturally increase. This is the true value of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering.

[10th anniversary full set far beyond the official] The 10th anniversary tour that will be the culmination of the original SABBATH will be depicted with such an updated sound of the highest peak. Speaking of the symbol of this tour, the official video “NEVER SAY DIE” of the Hammersmith performance is too famous, so let’s organize the set while comparing.

… and it looks like this. The sister work “DEFINITIVE FRESNO 1976” is “TECHNICAL ECSTASY Tour”, and this work is “NEVER SAY DIE Tour”. The sets of these two tours are very similar, so here we have summarized them in the same style so that they can be easily compared with their sister works. Especially the point is “Shock Wave”. It is a delicious song that can not be heard on the official Hammersmith video or on our soundboard decision board “PITTSBURGH 1976/1978: THE ULTIMATE EDITION (Zodiac 331)”. And above all, the flow of full show complete recording. Although the “NEVER SAY DIE Tour” is a tour with many pro shots / sound boards for Sabbath in the 70’s, there is no complete recording. You can experience it as a whole with the transcendental sound that the sound board runs barefoot.
“At any rate, it’s a terrific “king’s sound”.” This is it. No. 1 after all. You won’t find a better sounding recording than this. This work is an absolute work that pursues the possibilities of such a “master of the king” and raises the “top”. A true cultural heritage. * Superb audience recording of “September 22, 1978 Fresno Performance”. その最強録音が記録されたのは「1978年９月22日フレズノ公演」。その超絶級オーディエンス録音です。この録音はサバス・コレクターにとって特別中の特別。70年代に残されたあらゆるオーディエンス録音の頂点に輝く「王者の録音」だからです。録音時期やレア曲、臨場感など、ライヴアルバムには様々な価値があるものですが、本作を「王」たらしめている要因は、何と言っても超絶すぎるサウンド。あらゆる音源を集めているコンプリーター達が口を揃えて「コレが一番良い音」と断言している。念押ししますが、「この日のベスト」でもなければ、「ツアーベスト」でもありません。10年に及ぶ「オリジナルSABBATHのベスト」。本稿に目を留められた方なら、３年前に一世を風靡したマイク・ミラードの新発掘『LONG BEACH ARENA 1975（Zodiac 401）』をご記憶かと思いますが、あの超名盤を持ってしても、偉大なる本作の前には膝を屈するしかないのです。
この録音自体は古くから知られていましたが、その最高峰マスターが登場したのは2011年のこと。名門「Krow_Co」が大元カセットの発掘に成功。当店でもプレス３枚組『SABBATH IN FRESNO（の一部）』として大定番となったわけですが、従来からサウンドボードとして流通していた音源が「実はオーディエンス録音だった」と判明したのも衝撃なら（SBDと思い込んでいたサウンドが）さらにアップグレードするという事件でもありました。本作は、そんな王者のライヴアルバムを「GRAF ZEPPELIN」が細密マスタリングで磨き直し、最高峰を更新した「シン・王者」なのです。

【GRAF ZEPPELINマスタリングによる最高峰更新】
そんな本作のベースになっているのは既発『SABBATH IN FRESNO』……ではなく、12年前に発掘され今なお超える物のないベスト・マスター。大元に立ち返ってから「GRAF ZEPPELIN」がマスタリングしており、偏執的とも言える作業精度は間違いなく過去最高。1/1000秒の狂いも許さないピッチ／位相補正、帯域分析を経た上でのバランス調整、演奏音に影響しないギリギリの線を見切るノイズ処理などなど。基本に忠実ながら、入念を超えた執念レベルの作業量で磨き込んでいます。
特に今回効果的だったのは位相補正でしょうか。従来版はステレオ感がやや右に偏っていましたが、本作はビシッとセンターになっている。また、位相が厳密に正されたことで輪郭もグッと鮮明になっている。正直言って既発と交互に再生しないと分かりづらいかも知れませんが、比べなくても「理由は分からないけど、何となくパワーが増している」と感じられる事でしょう。ムリヤリ音圧稼ぎをしなくても、原音の精度を極めていけば、自然と鮮やかさが増す。これこそ「GRAF ZEPPELIN」マスタリングの真骨頂なのです。

そんな最高峰更新サウンドで画かれるのは、オリジナルSABBATHの集大成となる10周年ツアー。このツアーの象徴と言えば、ハマースミス公演の公式映像『NEVER SAY DIE』があまりにも有名ですので、比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。姉妹作『DEFINITIVE FRESNO 1976』は“TECHNICAL ECSTASY Tour”で、本作は“NEVER SAY DIE Tour”。この２ツアーはセットが酷似していますので、ここでは姉妹作と比べやすいように、同じスタイルでまとめました。特にポイントなのは「Shock Wave」。公式ハマースミス映像でも、当店のサウンドボード決定盤『PITTSBURGH 1976/1978: THE ULTIMATE EDITION（Zodiac 331）』でも聴けない美味しい１曲です。そして何より、フルショウ完全収録の流れ。“NEVER SAY DIE Tour”は70年代サバスにしてはプロショット／サウンドボードの多いツアーではあるものの、完全収録は１つもない。それをサウンドボードも裸足で逃げる超絶サウンドで丸ごと体験できるのです。
