『LIVE KILLERS』を生み出し、ライヴバンドとして名声を高めていった1979年。あの時代のQUEENを代表するマルチカメラ・プロショットの最高峰版が登場です。
その代表映像が撮影されたのは「1979年12月26日ロンドン公演」。先日ご紹介したキニー録音のフル・ライヴアルバム『HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1979（Wardour-307）』も大好評となっている伝統会場公演です。このショウは当時テレビでも放送され、プロショットが大定番として知られてきました。本作は、そんなプロショット２種の最高峰版をカップリングしたものです。その内容に触れる前に、まずはショウのポジション。『LIVE KILLERS』の現場となった“JAZZ TOUR”ともちょっと異なりますので、その辺を理解する意味でも当時のスケジュールで確認してみましょう。

これが『JAZZ』以降の日程。“JAZZ TOUR”の本編は日本公演を最後に終了。その後『THE GAME』制作を始めつつ、『LIVE KILLERS』をリリースし、秋には10月には先行シングル『Crazy Little Thing Called Love』を発売。そのシングルをテーマにした英国ツアー“CRAZY TOUR”が組まれました。本作のロンドン公演は、その最終日。そして、ポール・マッカートニーの呼びかけによるカンボジア救済チャリティ・コンサート“CONCERT FOR KAMPUCHEA”の初日でもありました。

【前半：長尺の流出プロショット】
そんなショウは前述の通りテレビ放送が大定番となってきたわけですが、本作の前半に収められているのはちょっと違う。2012年に発掘された、編集前の関係者流出マスターなのです。これが衝撃だった。何よりも強烈なのは、テレビ放送では観られなかったナンバーが８曲。「Jailhouse Rock（一部）」「We Will Rock You (fast)」「Somebody To Love」「Death On Two Legs」「Get Down, Make Love」「Love Of My Life」「’39」「Tie Your Mother Down」が大幅増量。それでも当日のフルセットには及ばず、曲間に編集カットもあるのですが、それでも約74分に及ぶマルチカメラ・プロショットの登場はあまりにも衝撃でした。
しかも、クオリティもテレビ放送版を遙かに凌駕していた。時たま微細な白線ノイズや音声の歪みもゼロではないので厳密には「オフィシャル級！」とは言えないものの、それらはあくまで瞬間的なもの。全編を覆い尽くす基本の画質・音質は公式級と呼んでもおかしくない。そんな映像美で「動くLIVE KILLERS」とも言える1979年の熱演が観られるのですから、まさに世界中のマニアが震撼するに十分な衝撃映像なのです。本作は、そんな流出プロショットでも最高峰。登場から７年が経って何種類かのマスターも出回りましたが、そのベストなものを厳選して収録しているのです。
そして、そんなクオリティで描かれるショウがまた凄い。“JAZZ TOUR”では母国ショウがなかったせいもあってか、この“CRAZY TOUR”はハイテンションな名演の連続。マニアから「全公演が凄い」と言われるほどのツアーでした。しかも、この日はポール・マッカートニーが主催するチェリティで注目度も高く、テレビ放送まで入っている。そんな状況にフレディは燃えに燃え、凄まじいまでのヴォーカリゼーションで吠えまくる。もちろん、その覇気は光景だからこそビビッドで、ダイナミックでキレのあるアクション、絶好調な歌声を振り絞るような表情、半ば暴力的なまでの大暴れ……。フレディだけでなく、ロジャーもえらく気合いが入っているのがマルチカメラのド直近アングルで楽しめるのです。

【後半：日本放送プロショット】
そして、後半に収録されているのは、同じショウのテレビ放送版『THE QUEEN SPECIAL』。イギリスBBCが制作して各国で放送されたのですが、本作はそのうち、“ヤング・ミュージック・ショウ”で放送された日本バージョンを収録しています。実のところ、日本はイギリス放送よりも10分ほど短かいものの、いずれにせよ上記の流出版の方が長い。その流出マスターにはない「Don’t Stop Me Now」は日本放送でもしっかりと観られます。
もちろん、クオリティは最高峰。国内の録画マニアによるマスターで、その映像美は絶品。オープニング15秒ほど劣化が見られるので流出マスターには及ばないものの、その後は肉薄。ダビング痕も見当たらず、絶品の映像美が番組終了までたっぷり味わえるのです。
そして、そのクオリティで描かれる番組は流出マスターにはない「Don’t Stop Me Now」だけでなく、滲み出る時代感も美味しい。番組冒頭ではナレーションが「日本中を席巻した」「アルバムを五千万枚も売った」「退廃的な無法者！」とまくし立て、曲間にはロンドンのあちこちで「クイーンはどうですか？」と聞いて回る。ファンがマジメに語ったりもしますが、中にはエリザベス女王（のモノマネ）に「陛下、クイーンファンですか？」と問い、パブの親父が「クイーン？がらくたロックだ。我々にはベートーベンがある。即刻止めさせろ！」と吠える。その安っぽいコントがいかにもイギリス臭い。こうした演出は英国制作なのですが、本作は日本放送だけに字幕も入り、珍妙な演出をビビッドに楽しめるのです。
また、当日演奏していない２曲「Another One Bites The Dust」「Flash’s Theme」はクリップなのですが、これが別バージョンなのも美味しい。どちらもお馴染みの演奏シーンではあるのですが、使用されているカットが違う。しかも「Another One Bites The Dust」は尺を切り詰めるために青空（なぜ？）シーンを交えながら豪快に切り貼り。テンポがまったく合わない凄い編集になっています。「Flash’s Theme」は演奏シーンだけでなく、挿入される映画シーンもまったく異なりますし、曲の最後には映画のクライタス将軍まで登場。これも番組オリジナルで、惑星モンゴではなくロンドンで「クイーンこそ悪魔だ。邪悪な存在だ」と凄んでくるのです。
もちろん、ショウこそが本命。『LIVE KILLERS』をイメージさせながらも当時の新曲「Crazy Little Thing Called Love」「Save Me」も盛り込まれ、しかも歌詞の対訳字幕付き。フレディの歌声も感動的な初期のライヴバージョンを満喫できます（「Save Me」のソロでブライアンが音を外してメチャクチャになってしまうのも初期らしさかも知れません）。

『Crazy Little Thing Called Love』を全米No.1に送り込み、いよいよ大全盛を究めようとしていた1979年のQUEEN。そのハイライトの大熱演を２種のプロショットで目撃できる最高峰映像です。まさに永久保存に相応しい文化遺産。どうぞ、この機会にたっぷりとお楽しみください。
