Bernie Marsden passed away on August 24, 2023. He was a famous British rock guitarist who left many famous songs and great performances with UFO, PAL, and above all, WHITESNAKE. The cause of his death has not been made public, but he was cared for by his wife and two daughters, and his 72-year life ended quietly.
By now, many people are probably listening to the memories of the great guitarist while playing WHITESNAKE’s masterpieces. Of course, that is important, but at a time like this, why not explore Bernie’s music more broadly and deeply and celebrate his life?
This work is a vacuum-packed recording of the private scene, and is an audience recording that gives you the feel of a closed room in a club. This is an original recording only for this work, and the sound is extremely neat and beautiful. It is not the type that can be mistaken for a sound board, but the atmosphere is clear and the delicate performance is clearly transmitted down to the subtleties. Moreover, because the box is extremely narrow, there is probably no physical distance between them. You can feel the “presence” of Barney playing the guitar and singing right in front of him. [Various and fun jukebox show] What is depicted in such a closed room private sound is a stage where the sense of privacy is exposed. As mentioned above, there were many Rory Gallagher cover projects at the time, but this work is far more diverse than that and has a lot of famous songs. It is a “live performance jukebox” situation that is exactly like a private party. To give you a sense of the fun, let’s rearrange the set by source material.

…and it looks like this. Bernie’s own music career started in 1972, so I’ve divided it into “roots music” from before then, and “contemporary music” from after he started his career. Bernie’s only original is “Here I Go Again”, the others are all covers of famous songs.
And the contents are more varied than expected. “Roots-kei” plays blues standards, but mainly rock songs from the 1960s. The selection includes only famous songs familiar to rock fans, such as the Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There,” Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild,” and the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me.”
“Contemporary songs” are more fun. As expected, classic songs from the 70’s and Rory Gallagher are included, but modern songs such as Tina Turner’s “Steamy Windows” and Prince’s “Purple Rain” pop out. And the ultimate song is KINGS OF LEON’s “Sex On Fire.” This song was released in 2008 and became a huge hit in the UK, selling 1.2 million copies. In England at the time, they played the latest hits in real time, and in fact, the intro alone drew applause, and the chorus caused a chorus. This alone will give you an idea of how much this work feels like a party.
Bernie Marsden was having a fun and exciting Christmas with his local friends. This is a live album that allows you to sit in such a private venue with a beautiful sound and beautiful appearance. Bernie here is not a former WHITESNAKE, nor is he a white bluesman who admires black people. He is a “musician” who loves music and enjoys playing music with his friends. Bernie Marsden’s true face that cannot be seen in the elaborate official works. Please take your time to enjoy this treasured album.

This is a private album where you can meet Barney casually having fun with his local friends.
2023年８月24日、バーニー・マースデン永眠。UFOやPAL、そして何よりWHITESNAKEで名曲と名演の数々を残した英国ロックの名ギタリストでした。死因は公表されていませんが、妻や２人の娘に看取られ、72年の生涯に静かに幕を下ろしたそうです。
今頃は、多くの方がWHITESNAKEの名盤をかけながら名ギタリストの想い出に身を委ねていることでしょう。もちろんそれも大切な事ではありますが、こんな時だからこそもっと幅広く、深くバーニーの音楽に触れ、彼の人生を祝福するのはいかがでしょうか。
【プライベート感覚満点のクリスマス・ギグ】
本作は、そんな「今」にぴったりの名作ライヴアルバム。「2011年12月17日ティンジェウィック公演」の端麗オーディエンス録音です。普段ならツアー・スケジュールを掲載するところですが、当時のバーニーは大きなツアーは行っておらず、ロリー・ギャラガーに捧げた『BERNIE PLAYS RORY』『BALLYSHANNON BLUES FOR RORY』等を発表しつつ、彼自身のブルースロックと向き合っていました。本作が記録されたのは、そんな2011年のクリスマス時期。彼の地元バッキンガムシャーで、約150規模という極めてプライベートなギグを開催したのです。
そのプライベート感満載な現場を真空パックした本作は、クラブの密室感たっぷりなオーディエンス録音。本作だけのオリジナル録音でして、そのサウンドは極めて端正で美しい。サウンドボードと間違えるようなタイプではないのですが、その空気感がクリアで繊細な演奏が機微の機微までくっきりと伝わる。しかも、ハコが極度に狭いために物理的に距離がないのでしょう。バーニーが目の前でギターを弾き、歌っているという「存在感」も肌感覚で味わえるのです。
【多彩で楽しいジュークボックス・ショウ】
そんな密室プライベート・サウンドで描かれるのは、プライベート感覚丸出しのステージ。前述の通り、当時はロリー・ギャラガーのカバー・プロジェクトが多かったのですが、本作はそれより遙かに多彩な有名曲が盛りだくさん。まさにプライベート・パーティ然とした「生演奏ジュークボックス」状態なのです。その楽しさを感じていただくためにも、ここで元ネタごとにセットを整理し直してみましょう。

そして、その中身が予想以上にバラエティ豊か。「ルーツ系」ではブルースのスタンダードも演奏しつつ、メインは60年代のロック・ソング。ビートルズの「I Saw Her Standing There」やステッペンウルフの「Born To Be Wild」、キンクスの「You Really Got Me」など、ロック・ファンお馴染みの名曲群ばかりが選ばれています。
もっと楽しいのが「同時代曲」。70年代の名曲群やロリー・ギャラガーは想定内として、モダンなティナ・ターナーの「Steamy Windows」やプリンスの「Purple Rain」まで飛び出す。そして、極めつけなのがKINGS OF LEONの「Sex On Fire」でしょう。この曲は2008年にリリースされ、英国でも120万枚の大ヒット。当時のイギリスでは知らぬ者はいないリアルタイムの最新ヒットまで演奏しており、実際に現場ではイントロだけで喝采が沸き、サビで合唱が起きる。いかに本作がパーティ感覚なのか、これだけでもご理解頂けるでしょう。
