The Beach Boys headed the 1980 Knebworth Festival. As was the case with the previous year’s ZEP, they are also recording both video and recording. On the contrary, it was clear that rehearsals were recorded on the premise of release.
However, no release was realized in the rear tie (this is also the same situation as ZEP), and the pattern became clear in the 21st century. Both the live album and the video were released at once, but the live video was established as a standard video of the Beach Boys in the DVD era.
Also, in the live performance when the surviving original members gathered in 2012, the scene where Carl Wilson sings “God Only Knows” for the virtual live was used very effectively from this video.
Such a standard live video is now out of print. In addition, there are only versions on YouTube that have been split uploaded, or versions that have been labeled as remastered & HD images, but are actually finished in a state that is unbearable to watch. A serious state that can not be seen.
Therefore, this time we have prepared a version that was broadcast in Japan on New Year’s Day 2007. Of course, the video itself is the same as what was released at the time, but there were comments from celebrities in the opening and ending at the time of broadcasting (I laughed bitterly at the comment at the end about the falsetto, with Brian and Mike confused. It will be interesting) just there.
However, what should be noted in this broadcast is that there is a telop that introduces each at the beginning of each song. This is really to the point, and it is wonderful that we Japanese can enjoy it more than the original video.
Looking at the video again, Dennis Wilson is drunk in the band on this day, and it seems that he has further fueled alcohol when he does not hit the drum. As evidence of that, while singing in “Surfer Girl”, he is involved in Mike Love, and it is laughable that he is entwined with Dennis and looks disgusting.
Moreover, in the middle of the live where Dennis does not hit the drums, support Bobby Figueroa is acting as a substitute, and as soon as he hits, the performance becomes solid, and it is in contrast to Dennis’ drumming, which tends to get drunk and run. bottom.
When Dennis returns to the drums again in the second half of the live, “Rock And Roll Music” finally loses the performance of him and the other members. Because of this happening, it seems that the Independence Day live in Washington two weeks later was released on VHS at that time instead of seeing the light of day in the rear tie.
However, compared to Washington’s editing, which was biased toward oldies, Knebworth’s great appeal is that it has a much more well-balanced selection of songs. The point is that it covers all the songs.
What’s more, the camera angle is overwhelming, and Al Jardine and Carl Wilson have a wonderful performance that allows them to sing from the camera’s point of view.
Includes a valuable Japanese broadcast version of the Beach Boys’ classic live video. Even though it was 2007, it captures the broadcast of 15 years ago with perfect image quality, and now you can enjoy the rare broadcast version more than the original live software, such as the opening and ending commentaries that make you feel nostalgic. I want you Again, the falsetto is Brian Wilson, not Mike Love (laughs).
