THE BAND in the 1980s reunited with Richard Manuel for the first time in six years, lacking Robbie Robertson. Introducing a powerful sound board set that reproduces the reunion tour in your brain.
Two performances are included in this work. “March 11th + 12th, 1984 Portland performance”. It is a 4-disc set with the stereo sound board recording arranged on 2 discs each. Reunited in 1983, they reached a major milestone due to Manuel’s suicide in 1986, but by then the legendary first visit to Japan was realized. In order to sort out such a situation, let’s first look back on the schedule at that time and confirm the position of the show.

● 1983
・ June 25-August 1: North America # 1 (10 performances)
・ August 25-September 5: Japan (8 performances) ← * Official video
・ October 12-November 26: North America # 2 (21 performances)
● 1984: February 28-September 8: North America # 3 (33 performances) ← ★ Here ★
● 1885: July 14th-November 2nd: North America # 4 (28 performances)
● 1986: January 20th-March 3rd: North America # 5 (16 performances)
《March 4: Richard Manuel dies》

This is THE BAND from the reunion to the death of Manuel. The above is only the performance under the name of “THE BAND”, and in addition to this, a tour of THE BYRDS tribute with the participation of members’ solos, duo, Danko and others was also carried out. The Portland performance of this work is “North America # 3”, the second year of reunion. It was the 5th-6th performance of the concert.
This work that recorded such a show is a super vivid sound board with a bare core. Although the information such as broadcasting is unknown, the sound itself is not refined like FM broadcasting, and it seems that it was recorded directly from the mix table of the on-site PA. Of course, it’s a beauty, not a drawback. The rough and vivid performance of the scene is poured directly into the brain without any decoration. Rather than recreating the concert scene, the feeling of synchronization that the whole body perfectly matches with the live performance of four people (+ support) is tremendous.
Moreover, even though it is rough, the sound quality itself is the best. On the first day (DISC 1-2), you can feel a slight graininess, but on the second day (DISC 3-4), the sound is glossy. The situation at that time was left in the official video “JAPAN TOUR ’83” of the performance in Japan, but it is the best that is comparable to the official sound board.
The super direct sound is drawn in a full show that is very similar to the legendary first visit to Japan, but the seasoning of the daily songs is also delicious. Here, let’s compare the two performances together with “JAPAN TOUR ’83”.

● Common to both days
・ Music from Big Pink: Long Black Veil / (Genetic Method) Chest Fever / The Weight / I Shall Be Released
・ The Band: Rag Mama Rag / King Harvest (Has Surely Come)
・ Stage Flight: The Shape I’m In / W.S. Walcott Medicine Show / Stage Fright
・ Moondog Matinee: Mystery Train
・ Southern Cross: It Makes No Difference
・ Others: Milk Cow Boogie / You Don’t Know Me / Caldonia / Java Blues
● Daily songs
・ First day only: Voodoo Music / Up On Cripple Creek / Blaze Of Glory / One More Shot (★) / Willie And The Hand Jive / Ophelia
・ Only on the second day: When I Get My Reward (★) / (I Don’t Want To) Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes / Every Night & Every Day (★)
* Note: “★” marks are songs that cannot be heard in “JAPAN TOUR ’83”.

… And it looks like this. The songs played on both days are centered around three pieces, “MUSIC FROM BIG PINK”, “THE BAND”, and “STAGE FRIGHT”, which are common to the performances in Japan. There is a style that changes the color with daily songs. There are two performances that are different from each other while the performances in Japan are revived vividly.
The pleasure of assembling the show at that time in the brain with a very thick stereo sound board of the direct line system. It is a big and superb live set where you can enjoy the real thrill of 2 performances. A 4-disc set that will be an absolute work in the reunion era. Please experience it to your heart’s content.

Long Black Veil/(Genetic Method) Chest Fever/The Weight/I Shall Be Released
Rag Mama Rag/King Harvest (Has Surely Come)
The Shape I’m In/W.S. Walcott Medicine Show/Stage Fright
Mystery Train
It Makes No Difference
Milk Cow Boogie/You Don’t Know Me/Caldonia/Java Blues
Voodoo Music/Up On Cripple Creek/Blaze Of Glory/One More Shot(★)/Willie And The Hand Jive/Ophelia
When I Get My Reward(★)/(I Don’t Want To) Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes/Every Night & Every Day(★)
