ANTHRAX in 2023, who is pushing forward with the 40th anniversary tour while Charlie Benante is leaving. The latest live album has arrived.
“January 20, 2023 Vancouver performance” is recorded in this work. It is the super best IEM matrix album. Speaking of Charlie, it is also a topic that he participated in the reunion Pantera, as well as ANTHRAX. Some people may be surprised by the news of “Charlie’s withdrawal” that jumped into such a situation. In order to explain the circumstances of that area (although it will be a little long), let’s start with their recent situation.

And so far, everything went as planned. However, after two performances of “North America # 2”, Charlie’s physical condition changed. No details have been released, but he is out of the tour as he undergoes “minor surgery”. According to the current announcement, he is scheduled to return in a few days, but until then, former HATE ETERNAL member Derek Roddy will take his place. This work is also the first night he sat on a stool. [“IEM only matrix” realizing unknown transcendental sound] This work is amazing just to listen to such a precious lineup, but the sound quality is more than that. Looking at the title, you may imagine a matrix of IEMs and audiences, but that is not the case. It is a multiplication matrix of “IEM x 4 types”! “This is the best.” The blunt story is “completely official class” … No, more than that. The sound of the performance and vocals are extremely thick and roaring, and the stereo feeling is overwhelming. There is no biased mix balance that is common in IEMs, and it is no different from the outflow sound board.
The individual IEMs used have not been made public, so it’s a guess, but perhaps this wonderful balance is the power of the matrix. Normally, IEMs are used by members and staff for work, and musically, they often have strange mixes. For example, it emphasizes the “sound” necessary for each task, such as grasping the tempo, timing to enter the performance, and adjustment of effects. Therefore, it is usually embedded in a well-balanced audience recording and subjected to a matrix that emphasizes the outline of the performance sound. However, this work is “IEM only matrix”. Complementing each other with a biased mix of IEMs, it seems that they have realized a well-balanced “transcendence IEM”. … and it looks like this. Basically, “ANTHRAX XL” is shaped up, but two rare songs were added there. It is the representative song “Only” of the John Bush era and the cover “Goodnight” of CHEAP TRICK. “Only” has been in the regular set since last year, but it was also a revival for the first time in 11 years. And “Goodnight”. It was played for the first time this year, but in fact it fell off the set with only two performances. It is a super rare song that is not currently played.
And the performance that spins such a set is also extremely rare. Featured Derek Roddy, but this is also brilliant. After all, Derek is known not only for HATE ETERNAL, but also for his activities in MALEVOLENT CREATION and NILE, and was a drummer who was a successor candidate when Mike Portnoy left DREAM THEATER. His power and technique are top-notch, and even though it’s the first day, he’s not inferior at all. The neatly aligned two-bus barrage is so beautiful that I think it’s Charlie himself.
“What kind of surgery did Charlie have, and when will he return?” And what will happen to Pantera? As he is approaching his 60th birthday, there is no end to his anxiety. However, one thing is clear, regardless of Charlie, the current ANTHRAX is strong and the 40th anniversary tour is doing great. This work is a proof of that sound. A high-class matrix album that will pour the intense slash paradise into your brain. Go ahead and be blown away to your heart’s content!
★ Superb matrix album of “January 20, 2023 Vancouver performance”. With a matrix of 4 types of IEM sound sources, the sound is completely official grade … that’s all. IEMs tend to be weird mixes, but here the four complement each other to achieve the perfect balance. The sound of the performance and vocals are extremely thick and roaring, and the stereo feeling is overwhelming. It is a new class masterpiece that pours the full show hit by Derek Roddy into the brain on behalf of Charlie who left for surgery.
チャーリー・ベナンテが離脱しつつも40周年ツアーに邁進している2023年のANTHRAX。その最新ライヴアルバムが到着です。
そんな本作に記録されているのは「2023年１月20日バンクーバー公演」。その超極上IEMマトリクス・アルバムです。チャーリーと言えば、ANTHRAXもさることながら再結成PANTERAに参加した事でも話題。そんな中で飛び込んできた「チャーリー離脱」の報に驚かれている方もいらっしゃるでしょう。その辺の事情をご説明する為にも（少々長くなりますが）まずは彼らの近況から始めましょう。

【チャーリーが離脱した現在進行形のANTHRAX】
以上が現在までに公表されている2022ー2024年のスケジュール。「＊」印がPANTERAの公演で、「・」がANTHRAXです。PANTERAは南米で復活を遂げましたが、現在は休止中。次なる日本の“LOUD PARK”を皮切りに本格的なツアーに突入する予定です。チャーリーはANTHRAXを抜けたわけではなく、PANTERAの合間を縫うようにしてツアーも実施。本作のバンクーバー公演は、そんな「北米#2」の３公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
と、ここまでは事前の計画通りの話。ところが「北米#2」を２公演こなしたところでチャーリーの体調に異変が発生。詳細は発表されていませんが「ささやかな手術」を行うため、ツアーから離脱しているのです。現在のアナウンスですと「数日で復帰予定」とのことですが、それまでの間は元HATE ETERNALのデレク・ロッディーが代役。本作は、彼がスツールに座った第一夜でもあるのです。
【未知の超絶サウンドを実現した「IEMだけマトリクス」】
本作はそんな貴重ラインナップが聴けるだけでもスゴいのですが、それ以上なのがサウンド・クオリティ。タイトルをご覧になってIEMとオーディエンスのマトリクスをイメージされるかも知れませんが、そうではない。「IEM×４種」の掛け合わせマトリクスなのです！ これがもう思いっきり極上。ぶっちゃけた話が「完全オフィシャル級」……いや、それ以上。演奏音もヴォーカルも極太＆ド密着で轟き、豪快なステレオ感も絶大。IEMsにありがちな偏ったミックス・バランスになることもなく、流出サウンドボードと何ら変わりません。
使用された個別のIEMが公開されているわけではないので推測になりますが、恐らくこの見事なバランスこそマトリクスの威力なのでしょう。通常、IEMはメンバーやスタッフが作業用に聴くもので、音楽的には奇妙なミックスな事が多い。例えば、テンポの把握や演奏に入るタイミング、エフェクトの調整具合など、個々の作業に必要な「音」が強調されているのです。そのため、普通はバランスの良いオーディエンス録音に埋め込み、演奏音の輪郭を際立たせるマトリクスを施すわけです。ところが、本作は「IEMのみのマトリクス」。それぞれに偏ったミックスのIEMで補完させ合い、全体バランスの整った「超絶IEM」を実現しているのでしょう。
【激レア曲と激レア・メンツのフルショウ】
ともあれ、そんな超ド級サウンドで画かれるのは、「40周年の特濃セット＋貴重ラインナップ」のフルショウ。40周年と言えば、公式作品『ANTHRAX XL』も記憶に新しいところ。早速、比較しつつセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。基本的には『ANTHRAX XL』をシェイプアップさせていますが、そこに加えられたのが２つのレア曲。ジョン・ブッシュ時代の代表曲「Only」とCHEAP TRICKのカバー「Goodnight」です。「Only」は昨年からレギュラーセット入りしていますが、それ自体が11年ぶりの復活でもありました。そして「Goodnight」。今年初めて演奏されたのですが、実はそれも２公演だけでセット落ち。現在は演奏していない激レア曲なのです。
そして、そんなセットを紡ぐパフォーマンスも激レア。注目のデレク・ロッディーですが、これがまた見事。何しろデレクはHATE ETERNALだけでなくMALEVOLENT CREATIONやNILEでの活動でも知られ、DREAM THEATERからマイク・ポートノイが脱退した際には後任候補でもあったドラマー。パワーもテクニックも超一流で、初日だというのにまったく遜色がない。綺麗に揃ったツーバス連打も、チャーリー本人じゃないかと思うほどに美しいのです。
チャーリーは一体何の手術を受けたのか、いつ戻るのか。そしてPANTERAはどうなるのか。彼も還暦を迎えているだけに不安は尽きません。ただ、１つだけハッキリしているのはチャーリーがどうあれ、現在のANTHRAXは強力で、40周年ツアーは絶好調だという事です。本作は、その音の証拠品。苛烈なスラッシュ・パラダイスを脳みそに流し込んでくれるド級のマトリクス・アルバム。どうぞ、思う存分ブッ飛ばされてください！
