関係者流出のスーパーサウンドボード第二弾！！驚愕の「ROCKS SESSION」に続いては完全初登場ステレオ・ライン録音のライヴ音源。本盤は「Aerosmith Express Tour」と題された「DRAW THE LINE」(77年12月リリース）に伴うツアーから、1978年4月8日のサンタモニカ公演2日目のステージを収録したものです。選曲を見てのお判りの通り、全10曲、44分と実際のステージの3分の2程の収録しかありません。前半から中盤にかけてセレクトされた楽曲しかも曲間MCは殆どカットされています。しかし楽曲そのものは最初から最後までしっかりと録音されているので聴いていてのストレスは全くないばかりか、とにかく、放送音源も含めたこの時代のサウンドボードとしては屈指の高音質で収録されており、ファンは感激の思いで聴き入ってしまうことでしょう。公演日付に関してですが、ファンならお判りの通り、1978年4月8日のサンタモニカと言えば、公式ライヴ盤「LIVE! BOOTLEG」でChip Away The Stoneが録音された日とされており、実際にそのようにオフィシャルアナウンスされています。しかし、ここで聴けるChip Away The Stoneは演奏そのものが「LIVE! BOOTLEG」とは全く違うのです。その代わり、同曲冒頭でスティーヴンが「People remember the Cali Jam? We wanna do a song we did there and release it as single. Say, are you alive out there tonight?」とMCしています。California Jam 2を引き合いに出してくることから、この公演が西海岸でのライヴであることが推測され、Rats In The Cellarからスタートするステージの流れが1978年前半の公演であることが判ります。ここからは憶測なのですが、今回入手したマスターカセットにはっきりと手書きで「Santa Monica 4/8/78」と書かれていること、そしてスティーヴンの上記MCから推測するに、このテイクこそがこの日のサンタモニカ公演であり、実際に史実通りChip Away The Stoneを公式ライヴ用に録音していたが、結局採用されずに別公演のテイクを使用した、しかし、同年10月にリリースされた「Live! Bootleg」には最初の録音予定地のサンタモニカの日付がそのまま書かれてしまった・・・のが真実ではないでしょうか。今回の「サンタモニカ」テープは、演奏された楽曲が、キチンとミックスされて10曲そのまま収められています。（勿論、これらは同年のシカゴ(3/23)、フィラデルフィア(3/26)、ボストン(3/28)、ダラス(7/4/78)といった有名音源とは全然違うテイクであり、間違いなく、過去に出回っていなかったものです。）ですので「Live! Bootleg」用に公式録音されミックスされたものの、オクラ入りになったもののひとつではないかということです。

それにしても、この公式級の音で聴けるエアロスミスのライヴの素晴らしいこと！まさに絶頂期のライブであり、最高の演奏内容が楽しめます。特にジョーペリーの好調さが際立ち、冒頭でわかるように、この日はフィードバックを完全にコントロールし、ソロのみならず、バッキングの小さなオブリガードでさえもその効果を多用し、クオリティの高いこの時期の中でも、全編に渡りベストと呼べるプレイを聞くことができます。ギターがオフィシャル盤同様に左右に完璧にセパレートされていますが、興味深い点として、Walk This Wayのイントロのトーキングモジュレーターがセンターにミックスされ、Aメロに入って徐々に右チャンネルにパンディングされて定位置に収まる点です。同じトーキングモジュレーターを使ったSweet Emotionでは右チャンネルに固定されており、さらに演奏日の近いオフィシャル版でも右チャンネルに固定されているので、この日だけの演出かもしれません。このようにマニアなら更なる発見が楽しめる初登場・公式レベルのスーパー・サウンドボード・テイク。最良の時期のエアロスミスのライヴを、怒涛の最高音質でお楽しみ下さい！
