In memory of Chick Corea, who has wrapped up the music scene since the newsletter on February 9th. Introducing a superb live album that should be called the decisive hit.
What is imbued with this work is the “July 9, 1978 Los Angeles Performance” held jointly with Herbie Hancock. It is the transcendental audience recording. Speaking of the two co-starring live albums, the official traditional albums “An Evening with Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea: In Concert” and “CoreaHancock” come to mind, but this work is completely different. It is a super masterpiece of Mike Millard who made the prestigious “JEMS” a self-confident work and realized it until the official release. There is no doubt that it was unearthed now that Chick’s obituary was engraved, but the sound and performance that are packed in this work are not just the dimension of a memorial board. Chick fans, Harvey fans, and Millard fans … it doesn’t matter who you pick them up for. A “new masterpiece of jazz” that is no longer official or unofficial. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは、ハービー・ハンコックとの連名で開催された「1978年７月９日ロサンゼルス公演」。その超絶級オーディエンス録音です。この日付で「あれ？」と思われている方もいらっしゃる事でしょう。そう、つい昨夜ジャズの専門チャンネル「Jazz³+」で公開され、今この瞬間も話題を集めているあのショウです。
「最新配信のCD化？」と思われるでしょうが、実は違います。本作は、あの伝説名手マイク・ミラードのオリジナル・マスター発掘事業から登場した極上ライヴアルバムなのです。実のところ、本稿を執筆しているのは「Jazz³+」の配信前なのですが、先行公開されたサンプルからすると確実にミラード録音です。まだ本編の配信が行われていないのでジェネまでは断言しかねるものの、本作は間違いなく名門「JEMS」による大元マスター。物理的に、最新配信に負けるはずがない最高峰版なのです。
配信・配信と連呼してしまいましたが、実のところ本作はミラード・コレクションでもズバ抜けた超極上品。何しろ、発掘を担っている「JEMS」自身が手放しで大絶賛。「このところ日常的にミラード・サウンドを聴いているが、今回は本当に素晴らしい」「公式リリース作品の基準に近いものだ」「コリアやハンコックのファンには最上の喜びだろうし、ミラードのファンには純粋なサウンドの素晴らしさだけで聴く価値がある」「まさにジューシーな音の魔法だ」……と、まるで当店インフォなんじゃないかと見紛う賛辞を並べ立てているのです。
もちろん、その言葉に嘘偽りはない。「Jazz³+」がシレッと公開している事からも想像いただけるかと思いますが、そのサウンドには距離感が（まったく）なく、芯のダイレクト感にも、ディテールの鮮明さにも、およそ大気の存在が感じられない。本当に客席で録音したのか、本当はピアノにマイクを貼り付けていたんじゃないのか……そんな超絶の密着感。「オーディエンス録音」という手法が存在する事さえ知らない一般のジャズ・ファンに堂々と聴かせられるビビッド・サウンドなのです。
そんな究極サウンドで描かれるのは、天才２人の火花散るピアノ・インプロヴィゼーション……だけではない！　２人の共演ライヴアルバムと言えば、オフィシャルの伝統盤『An Evening with Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea: In Concert』『CoreaHancock』が浮かびますが、本作はまったく違う。その意味をご説明するためにも、ここでショウの構成を整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。曲目を見ただけでも全然違うレパートリーなのですが、それ以上に構成もアンサンブルも異なる。ショウの序盤は２人だけで「Someday My Prince Will Come」「Homecoming」を演奏するものの、ピアノ・デュオはそこまで。セット・チェンジとMCを挟んで始まった「Night Sprite」からは、ストリングスやホーン、ヴォーカルまで入ったバンド・コンサートが始まるのです。
しかも、そのアンサンブルは苛烈。同年のソロ作『SECRET AGENT』のメンバーをほぼそのまま引き連れつつ、そのしなやかな演奏と熱気はRETURN TO FOREVERもかくやという素晴らしさ。「Mad Hatter Rhapsody」「Crystal Silence」「Spanish Fantasy」といった大曲もたっぷりと聴かせてくれますし、チックの奥方ゲイル・モランのソロ作からもタイトル曲を披露。単あるコリア＆ハンコックの共演では済まない、幅広くカラフルなフルショウをたっぷりと楽しめるのです。

名門「JEMS」渾身の自信作にして、オフィシャル公開まで実現してしまったマイク・ミラードの超傑作です。チックの訃報が刻まれた今だからこそ発掘されたのは間違いありませんが、本作に詰まっているサウンドも、演奏も、単なる追悼盤の次元ではありません。チックのファン、ハービーのファン、そしてミラードのファン……誰を目当てに手に取られたとしても関係ない。もはや公式／非公式の別さえ超えた「ジャズの新名盤」。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
