Dusty Hill died suddenly on July 28, 2021. The news is running around the world at this moment as well. The bereaved Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard are continuing the tour with Elwood Francis as a substitute. This was Dusty’s strong hope.
There was no member change since debut, and the impact was so huge only for ZZ TOP, which was an immovable trio, but this is not the first time that a substitute has been appointed. In the past, Frank collapsed due to a sudden illness during the tour, and he had a show with a substitute drummer for only a few performances. A superb sound board album that allows you to experience such a rare “ZZ TOP without Frank” full show will be released as a gift.
This work was recorded at “October 15, 2002 Saarbrücken performance”. It is the superb stereo sound board recording. It was part of the “XXX Tour” at the time, but I haven’t been touring since the 1999 album release. The main tour ended in 1999/2000. There was no movement in 2001, and a mini tour of less than 30 performances was held in 2002. First of all, let’s grasp the situation at that time on that schedule.

This is ZZ TOP in 2002. Frank had an emergency operation for acute appendicitis when he entered Paris for the 9th European Tour. From that day on, John Douglas of Drum Tech sat on the stool for about three performances. Frank, who returned less than a week after the surgery, is far from normal, but Douglas, who performed a full show every day as an emergency substitute, is also superhuman. It was a feat because it was a crew who accompanied the tour and was familiar with all the songs.
Anyway, this work recorded in such an ultra-rare show is a superb stereo sound board that makes you want to line up with “ultra-ultra …” quality. Actually, it was recorded directly from the mix table as a related person outflow master excavated by our own route. The sound is already glaring. There is no polishing like FM broadcasting and official board, and the bare live performance sent to the on-site PA is screwed into the brain. Now recall the most intense direct-to-desk soundboard you’ve ever experienced in your life. Think of the sound of this work as the same as the sound you remembered, or a few steps further.
The full show filled with a super rare version by John Douglas is drawn with such a different dimension direct sound. It’s fun to listen to the performance, so let’s just organize the set here.

Elwood Francis, who is currently acting as a substitute for Dusty, is a guitar tech who has traveled the world with ZZ TOP for many years. In the rock world, joints with celebrities are in full bloom, but they are not. There is no way that a red stranger who popped in could act as a substitute. In addition to that fact, this work is a transcendental sound board album in which Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill’s sound, sound, and voice are screwed directly into the brain. 2021年７月28日、ダスティ・ヒルが急逝。その報は今この瞬間も全世界を駆け巡っています。遺されたビリー・ギボンズとフランク・ベアードは代役にエルウッド・フランシスを登用してツアー続行中。これは、ダスティ本人の強い希望だったそうです。
デビューから一切のメンバーチェンジがなく、不動のトリオだったZZ TOPだけにその衝撃はあまりにも巨大なのですが、代役を起用したのは今回が初めてだったわけではありません。かつて、ツアー中のフランクが急病で倒れ、数公演だけ代役ドラマーとショウを行った事があるのです。そんな激レアな「フランク抜きZZ TOP」のフルショウを体験できる超極上サウンドボード・アルバムがギフト・リリース決定です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「2002年10月15日ザールブリュッケン公演」。その超極上ステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。当時は“XXX Tour”の一環だったのですが、1999年のアルバム・リリースからずっとツアーをしていたわけでもありません。ツアーのメインは1999年／2000年に一旦終了。2001年は何の動きもなく、2002年に30公演弱のミニ・ツアーが実施されました。まずは、その日程で当時の状況を把握してみましょう。

これが2002年のZZ TOP。欧州ツアーを９公演目のパリに入ったところでフランクが急性盲腸炎で緊急手術。その日から３公演ほどドラム・テックのジョン・ダグラスがスツールに座りました。手術から一週間も経たずに復帰したフランクも常人離れしていますが、緊急の代役でフルショウを連日こなしたダグラスも超人的。ツアーに同行し、全曲に精通していたクルーだからこその離れ業だったわけです。
ともあれ、そんな超・激レアなショウで記録された本作は、クオリティも「超々々……」とズラズラ並べたくなる極上ステレオ・サウンドボード。実は当店の独自ルートによって発掘された関係者流出マスターでしてミックス卓からダイレクトに録音されたもの。そのサウンドたるや、もうギラッギラのバッキバキ。FM放送や公式盤のような磨き込みは一切なく、現場ＰＡに送り込まれる丸出しの生演奏が脳みそにねじ込まれる。ここで、これまでの人生で体験された最も強烈な卓直結サウンドボードを思い出してみてください。本作のサウンドは、思い出されたサウンドと同じか、さらに数段手だと思ってください。
