This is a superb audience recording that vacuum-packed the first act of “BEER DRINKERS AND HELL RAISERS Tour 2003-2004”. This is the 2003/2004 ZZ TOP. 2003 is remembered as the year of “MESCALERO”, but the tour started four months before the album was released, and it was finally released after most of the shows. The Houston performance of this work was the final performance that marked the last of 2003.
This work recorded at such a show is exactly the best audience with “super”. Although it is an original master brought by its own route, the core is very thick and the sense of distance is not perfect, and the details are super clear. Not only the guitar and drums that are easy to catch beautifully, but also the bass is beautiful from the attack to the sound of each note, and the vocals are beautifully separated to the entanglement of the chorus. Although it can be understood that it is an audience recording because you can sometimes hear the cheering that seems to be close, the essential performance sound and vocals are completely sound board grade. That is the best sound that I think is an FM broadcast with the cheers of ambient microphones.
This high-quality sound is incomprehensible enough to explore the situation. I thought that it was an outdoor venue because of the extremely thick and direct sound, but the “Compaq Center” that became the site was an indoor sports arena. Moreover, it is a scale that can accommodate 16,000 people, even if it makes a screaming sound. Was it very close to PA, or was it actually recorded by the people involved? Anyway, it’s a super tight sound that is impossible unless there are some special circumstances.
What is drawn with such a mysterious sound is a full show that is a compilation of concentrated glorious careers. Speaking of ZZ TOP in the 2000s, the official live work “LIVE FROM TEXAS” is more famous than anything else, so let’s organize the set while comparing.

… And it looks like this. I thought that there would be more new songs after the release of “MESCALERO”, but in fact it is the same as “MESCALERO IN NEW JERSEY”. You can also enjoy the limited song “Piece” only for this tour. Another feature of the day is the appearance of guests. Rick Perry appears in the final “Sharp Dressed Man”. He co-stars on drums. This person is a well-known drummer in the south. .. .. Not the Governor of Texas. After that, he was a politician who advanced into national politics and served as Secretary of Energy under the Trump administration.
Even so, how did you record such a sound? And why didn’t so many recordings hit the market? It is a masterpiece of a miracle live album that does not apply to all the common sense of audience recording. これが2003年／2004年のZZ TOP。2003年は『MESCALERO』の年として記憶されているわけですが、ツアーはアルバム発売の４ヶ月も前からスタートし、大半のショウをこなした後でやっと発売されるという一風変わったスケジュール。本作のヒューストン公演は、そんな2003年のラストを飾る最終公演でした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、まさに「超」付きの極上オーディエンス。独自ルートでもたらされたオリジナル・マスターなのですが、とにかく芯が極太で距離感がまるでなく、ディテールも超鮮明。綺麗に捉えやすいギターやドラムはもちろん、ベースも１音１音のアタックから鳴りまで美しく、ヴォーカルはコーラスの絡みまで綺麗にセパレートしている。ときおり間近っぽい声援も聞こえるのでオーディエンス録音と分かるものの、肝心の演奏音やヴォーカルは完全にサウンドボード級。それこそ、アンビエント・マイクの歓声を重ねたFM放送かと思うほどの極上サウンドなのです。
この高音質ぶりは、状況を探るほどに不可解。あまりに極太＆ダイレクトなサウンドだけに野外会場かと思いきや、現場となった“コンパックセンター”は屋内スポーツ・アリーナ。しかも１万6000人収容というボワボワした鳴りになってもおかしくない規模なのです。よほどＰＡの間近だったのか、実は関係者が録音していたのか……。ともかく何か特別な事情でもない限りあり得ないほどの超タイト・サウンドなのです。
そんな不可思議サウンドで描かれるのは、栄光のキャリアを濃縮した集大成のフルショウ。2000年代のZZ TOPと言えば、何よりも公式ライヴ作『LIVE FROM TEXAS』が有名ですので、比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『MESCALERO』リリース後は新曲も増えるかと思いきや、実は『MESCALERO IN NEW JERSEY』と同一。このツアーだけの限定曲「Piece」も楽しめます。また、ゲストが登場するのもこの日の特徴。終盤の「Sharp Dressed Man」でリック・ペリーが登場。ドラムで共演します。この人は南部では名の知れたドラマー。。。ではなく、テキサス州の知事。その後、国政に進出してトランプ政権下でエネルギー長官を務めた政治家です。
それにしても、これほどのサウンドをどうやって録音したのか。そして、なぜこれほどの録音が出回らなかったのか。オーディエンス録音のあらゆる常識が通用しないミラクルなライヴアルバムの大傑作です。ZZ TOPファンは当然不可避ではありますが、オーディエンス録音という文化自体に興味のある方にも触れていただきたい１本。どうぞ、心ゆくまでたっぷりとお楽しみください。
