A combination that has never been seen before: Yngwie Malmsteen/Glenn Hughes. The best live album reporting on the latest coupling tour with both men lined up has arrived.
What is inscribed in this work is “August 22, 20233 New York City performance”. This is a very thick audience recording that vacuum-packs the whole story. This coupling tour will be held in August/September, but it will be an irregular schedule with individual performances of each in between. This is the schedule for 2023 that has been announced so far. The “・” mark is Yngwie’s solo performance, and the “*” mark is a coupling performance with Glenn. The coupling tour is scheduled for a total of 22 performances, and the New York performance of this work was the first and third concert. This work is a 3-disc set that includes main act Yngwie’s full show on DISC 1-2, and Glen’s stage on DISC 3.
This work, which conveys such a show, is a powerful sound with an extremely thick core that approaches with no sense of distance. The venue, Palladium Times Square, is an indoor hall that can seat 2,000 people, and is comparable to Orchard Hall in Japan. Despite this, even when listening with headphones, you can hardly feel the hall sound component, and it feels like you are recording an outdoor festival with zero echo right in front of the PA.
The Yngwie edition is especially astonishing. Judging from the sound output, the guitar is coming out fiercely, but it is captured clearly and glossily without getting muddy or cracking. Even the incredibly light-speed passages are clear down to the grain of each note, and the separation from the synths and drums is also unusually vivid. I can definitely hear the lively cheers during the opening part and between songs, so I’m sure it’s an audience recording, but as soon as the performance starts, the sound is so thick and close that you can’t believe your ears. The biggest factor in achieving such a great sound is probably the skill of the recording artist. In fact, this work is also the work of “bcironmaiden”, who is famous as a modern master. This person is also known for his masterpieces in the general genre, but as his name suggests, he is also a master of HR/HM genre. Recently, Nancy Wilson’s “BETHLEHEM 2023 (Shades 1811)” and Michael Schenker’s “GLENSIDE 2022 (Shades 1638)” have also become a hot topic. In particular, if you have been paying attention to this article, you may remember Yngwie’s “GLENSIDE 2021 (Shades 1437)”. This work is the latest collection of such masters.

The full show of both men is drawn with such a master’s thick sound. First of all, the main Yngwie edition (DISC 1-2) is the basic set of “PARABELLUM Tour” as it is, from Jimi Hendrix covers to “Relentless Fury”, “Wolves At The Door” and “(Si Vis Pacem) Parabellum” from the latest work “PARABELLUM”. The basics are similar to the aforementioned “GLENSIDE 2021” by the same recording artist, but “Now Your Ships Are Burned” and “Red House”, which were not played in that masterpiece, are also performed.
The replacement Glenn edition (DISC 3) is a set that condenses the current “CLASSIC DEEP PURPLE LIVE Tour” into about an hour. All songs are purple, with the “BURN” number as the main focus, and “Stormbringer,” “Gettin’ Tighter,” and “Highway Star” interspersed.
Yngwie & Glen’s long career and unlikely collaboration. This is the definitive edition where you can fully experience the full show with the thickest master sound. Although the expected collaboration jam did not materialize, it is excellent as the latest Yngwie live album and as a collection of Purple songs sung by Glenn. そんなショウを伝える本作は、オンで極太な芯が距離感ナシに迫るド迫力サウンド。現場となった“Palladium Times Square”は2,000人クラスの屋内ホールで、日本で喩えるならオーチャードホールといったところ。それにも関わらず、ヘッドフォンで聴いてもホール鳴り成分がほとんど感じられず、まるで反響ゼロの野外フェスをPAの真ん前で録音しているようなド密着感があるのです。
特に驚異的なのはイングヴェイ篇。出音からしてギターが猛烈に前に出ているわけですが、それが濁りも割れもせずにクリア＆艶かかに捉えられている。凄まじいまでの光速パッセージも１音１音の粒立ちまでくっきりとしており、シンセやドラムとのセパレートも異常に鮮やか。開演パートや曲間で生々しい歓声が聞こえるのでオーディエンス録音二間違いないとは思いますが、いざ演奏が始まるや「あれ？　IEMsだったっけ？」と耳を疑うほどの極太＆ド密着サウンドが噴き出すのです。
それほどのサウンドが実現した最大の要因は、やはり録音家の手腕でしょう。実のところ本作は、現代の名手と名高い「bcironmaiden」氏の作品でもある。この人物はジェネラル系の名作群でも知られるのですが、その名から分かる通りHR/HM系もこよなく愛する名手。最近ではナンシー・ウィルソンの『BETHLEHEM 2023（Shades 1811）』やマイケル・シェンカーの『GLENSIDE 2022（Shades 1638）』も話題になりました。特に本稿に目を留められた方ならイングヴェイの『GLENSIDE 2021（Shades 1437）』をご記憶かも知れません。本作は、そんな名手の最新コレクションなのです。

代わってのグレン篇（DISC 3）は、現行の“CLASSIC DEEP PURPLE LIVE Tour”を約１時間に濃縮したセット。全曲パープルで『BURN』ナンバーを主軸に「Stormbringer」「Gettin’ Tighter」「Highway Star」を散りばめられています。
