The unit “8 people YES” that left a strange brilliance in the history of British prog rock while being extremely luxurious. The new soundboard album is here.
What is recorded in this work is “August 6, 1991 Costa Mesa performance”. That stereo soundboard recording. Speaking of “8 people YES”, the official monster box “UNION 30 LIVE” is also new to my memory, but this work is a new excavation board that is not recorded there either.
Anyway, first of all, the position of the show. Let’s look back at the big picture of the world tour, which was also the gravitational singularity of YES history.

This is the outline of the activities of “8 people YES”. For us, the memorable performance in Japan is a reunion position months away from Potsun, and the main tour is only in 1991. The Costa Mesa performance of this work was the 26th performance of “North America # 2”, the final edition of the concert. Speaking of “8 people YES”, the mountain view performance that was the main part of the official work “UNION LIVE” is a symbol, but this work was also two days before (two performances before).
This work recorded at such a show is a newly excavated sound board that collectors all over the world are now shining. Its origin is also mysterious, and various speculations are being made. Although it has not been confirmed yet, the theory that “a sound board recorded for broadcasting, but leaked without being broadcast” is predominant at present. The basis of that theory is the superb sound quality. Now that a huge official box is out, it seems that it is not a big deal to call it “official class”, but there is no choice but to call it that way.
It’s a raw and unorganized mix, but it’s not bad. The bare core is as vivid as modern IEMs, and the unprocessed rawness conveys the ensemble to the subtleties. Moreover, it is irresistible because the Lord is “8 people YES” which is a miracle of rock history. Even though there are two guitars / keyboards / drums, each note is beautifully separated, and no matter how complicated they are intertwined, they do not mix. You can’t expect the sound to be directly connected to the table, but you can’t expect the experience of the concert on-site, but the synchronized feeling that the live performance and the whole body match perfectly is enormous, and it is possible to analyze the miracle ensemble in detail.
Also, the strange thing is that there is a DJ-like story at the beginning and the set change part. However, it’s just “like” and I don’t think the tone and content are DJs themselves. This also supports one of the “leakage of unbroadcast soundboards” theory, and it is said that it is probably the voice of the people involved in the leak process. It’s not a beauty or a drawback because it doesn’t suffer from playing, but it’s also a part that provides a little fun to solve the mystery.
By the way, what is drawn on the finest sound board with many such mysteries is a show that is a bit different from the official “UNION LIVE”. As mentioned above, although it is the latest of “UNION LIVE”, you can enjoy the volume of songs that exceeds the official work that was incompletely recorded. Let’s organize them while comparing them here.

…… And it looks like this. Not only can you enjoy “Changes” and “Lift Me Up” because they include the famous songs “And You And I” and 90125 YES, but you can also show off the limited song “Shock To The System” of this tour. You can enjoy all of them with the sound board directly connected to the brain.
Also, a little interesting is “Yours Is No Disgrace”. The intro runs fast as usual, but now I’m on vocals! No one starts singing at that timing. It seems that there was a PA trouble, and not only John but also Chris and Howe have completely lost sight of the timing, and the voice that blows out unintentionally can be heard on the sound board directly connected (although it is amazing to recover from that desperate situation). ..
Because it is a sound board directly connected to the table, it has a great sense of synchronization and a volume that far exceeds “UNION LIVE”. It is a new excavation album where you can fully enjoy the miracle ensemble of “8 people YES” with tremendous quality. A marvelous three-disc set that should be noted in the history of progressive rock. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

★ Stereo soundboard recording of “August 6, 1991 Costa Mesa performance”. It is a new excavation master that has not been recorded in the official box “UNION 30 LIVE”, and the super direct feeling directly connected to the table is vivid. It’s a raw and unorganized mix, and the bare core conveys the ensemble to the subtleties. You can enjoy a full show with a repertoire that you can’t hear in “UNION LIVE” such as “And You And I”, “Changes”, “Lift Me Up”, and “Shock To The System” in transcendental quality.

豪華さを極めつつ、英国プログレ史に異形の輝きを残したユニット「８人YES」。その新たなサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に記録されているのは「1991年８月６日コスタメサ公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。「８人YES」と言えば、公式の化け物ボックス『UNION 30 LIVE』も記憶に新しいところですが、本作はそこにも収録されていない新発掘盤です。
何はともあれ、まずはショウのポジション。YES史の重力特異点でもあったワールドツアーの全体像から振り返ってみましょう。

これが「８人YES」の活動概要。私たちにとっては思い出深い来日公演はポツンと何ヶ月も離れた再結成的なポジションで、ツアー本編はあくまで1991年。本作のコスタメサ公演は、その最終盤である「北米#2」の26公演目にあたるコンサートでした。「８人YES」と言えば、公式作『UNION LIVE』のメインともなったマウンテン・ビュー公演が象徴ですが、本作はその２日前（２公演前）でもありました。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、今まさに世界中のコレクターが色めき立っている新発掘サウンドボード。その出自も謎が多く、様々な推察が行われている真っ最中。まだ確定はされていませんが、現在のところでは「放送用に記録されたサウンドボードだが、放送されずに流出したもの」という説が有力です。その説の根拠となっているのは、あまりに極上なサウンド・クオリティにある。巨大な公式ボックスも出ている今となっては「オフィシャル級」と呼んでも大したことないと思われそうですが、やはりそう呼ぶしかない。
生々しく未整理なミックスではありますが、それが悪いわけではない。丸出しの芯は現代IEMsのように鮮烈で、無加工な生々しさはアンサンブルを機微の機微まで伝えてくれる。しかも、その主がロック史の奇跡である「８人YES」なのですからたまらない。ギター／キーボード／ドラムが２人ずついるにも関わらず、その１音１音が綺麗にセパレートしており、いくら複雑に絡み合っても混じり合わない。明らかな卓直結サウンドにコンサートの現場体験感は望めませんが、生演奏と全身が完全一致するシンクロ感は絶大で、奇跡のアンサンブルを事細かに分析することも可能なのです。
また、不思議なのは冒頭やセット・チェンジのパートでDJっぽい語りが入る事。ただし、あくまで「っぽい」であって口調も内容もDJそのものとは思えない。これもまた「未放送サウンドボードの流出」説の裏付けの１つとなっており、恐らく流出過程の関係者の肉声ではないかとも言われています。演奏には被らないので別に美点にも欠点にもならないのですが、ちょっとした謎解きの面白さを提供してくれるパートでもあります。
さて、そんな謎多く極上サウンドボードで描かれるのは、公式『UNION LIVE』ともまたひと味違ったショウ。前述のように『UNION LIVE』の直近ではあるものの、不完全収録だった公式作を超える曲数ボリュームが楽しめるのです。ここで比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。名曲「And You And I」や90125YESを内包しているからこその「Changes」「Lift Me Up」が楽しめるだけでなく、このツアーの限定曲「Shock To The System」まで披露。そのすべてを脳みそド直結サウンドボードで味わえるのです。
また、ちょっと面白いのは「Yours Is No Disgrace」。普段通りにイントロが快走するのですが、さあここでヴォーカル入り！というタイミングで誰も歌い出さない。ＰＡトラブルがあったらしく、ジョンだけでなくクリスやハウも完全にタイミングを見失っており、思わず吹き出す声がド直結サウンドボードで聞こえてくるのです（その絶望的な状況から立て直すのも凄いですが）。
卓直結系サウンドボードだからこその絶大なシンクロ感と、『UNION LIVE』を遙かに超えるボリューム。凄まじいまでのクオリティで「８人YES」の奇跡アンサンブルをたっぷり味わえる新発掘アルバムです。プログレッシヴ・ロック史に特筆すべき驚異の３枚組。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分に味わい尽くしてください。
