Masterpiece “WHO’S LAST” of the official live album that is now out of print. That “one piece version” is a gift release decision.
Speaking of “WHO’S LAST”, it is a live album that was produced to be THE WHO’s final work, and it is a traditional official work that has been conveying the “farewell tour” for a long time. The original release was in 1984 during the dissolution period, and appeared as a masterpiece of analog 2-disc set exceeding “LIVE AT LEEDS”, and at that time it was also released as a 2-disc set on CD. From that background, the image of “two-disc set” is strong, but in fact, there was also a “single-disc CD” in the long sound source history. That is the British CD “MCLD 19005” released in 1991. This work is one that has been reprinted precisely from the mint quality board.
At this point, it’s only natural to think, “What’s the difference from the original 2-disc set?” As a matter of fact, the running time of the original 2CD version “WHO’S LAST” is “75:54”. Originally, it was the size that would fit on a single CD. Did you avoid recording for a long time in the early days of the CD in 1984, or did you want to maintain the price of the two-disc set even on the CD? The latest released CD (Japan board jacket CD) is also a set of two. It is also a work that has traced an indescribable sound source history.
“That’s why the content of this work is faithful to the original.” The running time is a few seconds shorter, but that would be the silence on cracking the disc. The analog 2-disc set (= 4 faces) is left without connecting the fades instead of the faces, and the whole is contained in one sheet as it is.
I could end the commentary here, but since it’s a big deal, let’s also touch on the contents of “WHO’S LAST”. It is known as an edited live album recorded at multiple performances, but when and where was it? Speaking of the “farewell tour”, another classic “LIVE FROM TORONTO” is also familiar, so let’s check the schedule together.
《“IT’S HARD” released on September 4th》
・ September 10th + 11th (2 performances: UK)
・September 22-October 9 (13 performances)
*October 10: East Rutherford performance ← WHO’S LAST
・October 12-17 (4 performances)
*October 20: Seattle performance ← WHO’S LAST
・October 21-25 (3 performances)
*October 27: San Diego performance ← WHO’S LAST
・October 29th + 31st (2 performances)
-About a month later-
・November 27-December 13 (12 performances)
*December 14th: Cleveland performance ← WHO’S LAST
* December 16th + 17th: Toronto performance ← * LIVE FROM TORONTO
This is the 1982 “farewell tour”. It is roughly divided into two with about a month off, and “WHO’S LAST” is compiled from 4 times. Of course, it is not even recorded from each show. Let’s check which show was the main and the recorded songs for each performance.
● December 14: Cleveland performance (12 songs)
・My Generation/I Can’t Explain/Baba O’Riley/Boris The Spider/Who Are You/Pinball Wizard/See Me, Feel Me/Love, Reign o’er Me/Long Live Rock/Won’t Get Fooled Again / Doctor Jimmy (★) / Twist and Shout
● Others (4 songs)
・October 10: East Rutherford Performance: Behind Blue Eyes (★)
・October 20: Seattle performance: Magic Bus (★) / Summertime Blues (★)
・ October 27: San Diego performance: Substitute (★)
*Note: “★” marks are songs that could not be heard on “LIVE FROM TORONTO”.
… and it looks like this. The main is clearly “December 14, 1982 Cleveland Performance”. The other 3 performances were complementary with 1-2 songs each. The Cleveland performance was just before “LIVE FROM TORONTO”, and the set was very similar. In order to have variety there, you probably have collected takes from various places on the tour. All the songs from the other 3 performances were repertoires not found in “LIVE FROM TORONTO”.
The official work “WHO’S LAST” has gone through a strange sound source history, probably because it was a work in the early days of CD. It is a live album that reprints the rare “single CD”. There is nothing special about the music, and it is a maniac piece for collectors, but it is also a masterpiece of music that makes you feel passionate when you listen to it. Please take this opportunity to add it to your collection.
★Traditional official live album released as a gift. The original CD was a 2-disc set, but this work is a detailed reprint from the out-of-print “single CD” British CD “MCLD 19005”. Although there is no musical difference, it is a valuable collection.
