In recent years, “Mike Millard Tape” has been digitized from the master direct or low generation tape. This tape was recorded by Mike Millard, a taper familiar to fans due to the outstanding technology of audience recording. The label has released several sound sources based on this newly digitized Mike Millard tape, but if you look closely, you can see “Brushed Mike Millard Tape” and “Legendary Mike Millard.” Did you notice that there are two types of tapes? Not all Mike Millard tapes have perfect sound quality, and some have a lot of room for improvement, and the “Brushed” series has been significantly improved. Originally, it is almost perfect and there is not much room for sound quality improvement, and the “Legendary” series is the one that has been kept to a minimum such as light editing between songs.
This time, the Who’s problematic work from the “Brushed” series is here. It was recorded in November 1973. Considering this time, it is a turbulent period that deep fans know. As for the album, the sixth work “Quadrophenia” produced in the “rock opera” style since “Tommy” has just been released. The album itself was selling well, but it was hard work on stage to reproduce this album live. After all, despite the album that incorporated a lot of synths, there were no players among the members of The Who, and the support members were not convened and forced. In fact, it seems that there were many troubles such as the performance did not match the tape recorded in advance. It’s such a messy live, and it doesn’t mean that the real thrill of booting is “a masterpiece that you can’t experience on an official album.” Rather, it is a historical document that contains “the blood of the turmoil of the time and the hardships of the band.” Although the sound quality has been improved considerably, it is not a good level for a mirrored sound source. That’s why it’s not for beginners at all. But if you’re a fan of The Who, Pandora’s box is a must-see. Take on the challenge with courage.

近年マスター直、或いはロウ・ジェネレーションのテープからデジタル化が進んでいる“マイク・ミラード・テープ”。オーディエンス録音の卓越した技術でファンにはお馴染みのテーパー、マイク・ミラード氏により録音されたテープです。同レーベルからもこの新デジタル化のマイク・ミラード・テープをマスターにした音源が複数リリースされておりますが、よく見ると“ブラッシュド・マイク・ミラード・テープ”と“レジェンダリー・マイク・ミラード・テープ”の二種類があることにお気付きでしょうか。マイク・ミラード・テープも全てが完璧な音質なわけではなく、中にはかなり手を加えて改良の余地があるものもあり、大幅に手を加えて改良されたものが“ブラッシュド”シリーズ。元々完璧に近く音質改良の余地があまり無く、曲間等の軽い編集など最低限にとどめてあるものが“レジェンダリー”シリーズとなります。
今回は“ブラッシュド”シリーズよりザ・フーの問題作登場です。収録されたのは1973年の11月。もうこの時期を考えればディープなファンならご存知の混迷期。アルバム的には『トミー』以来の“ロック・オペラ”スタイルで製作された6作目『四重人格』がリリースされたばかり。アルバム自体好調なセールスとなったわけですが、このアルバムをライヴで再現すべくステージでは七転八倒四苦八苦。なにせシンセを大きく取り入れたアルバムにもかかわらずザ・フーのメンバーにはプレイヤーが居らず、サポートメンバーも招集せず強行した形。実際、前もって録音しておいたテープと演奏が合わないなどのトラブル多発となったようです。そんなごったごたなライヴで、ブートの醍醐味“オフィシャル・アルバムでは体験できない名演”が収められているわけではありません。むしろ“当時の混迷ぶりとバンドの苦労の血石”が収められた歴史的資料です。音質もだいぶ改善は加えましたがミラード音源としては良いとは言えないレヴェルです。と、言うわけで全然初心者向けではないアイテムです。しかしザ・フーのファンなら一度は覗いてみたいパンドラの箱。勇気をもってチャレンジしてください。
