ライブを重ねるごとに演奏がどんどん良くなってくる…と世界中のマニアから高い評価を受けているザ・フーの「HITS BACK」ツアー。これまでもUXBRIDGEレーベルはCD-Rならではの機動力を生かしてリリース、さっそく最高音質盤となった「OKLAHOMA CITY 2022」が先週登場したばかり。
ところが今回リリースされる5月15日のシンシナティ公演の音質がまた素晴らしい。この日は会場が非常に盛り上がっており、そんな周囲の様子も捉えられている。ところが、それ以上に演奏の迫力が圧倒しており、聞いていてストレスになることは全くありません。
それどころかフィナーレ「Baba O’Riley」における大合唱の場面などは会場のエコー感と相まって実に絶妙なバランスとなっており、これをヘッドフォンで聞いていると鳥肌が立つほど。
おまけにこの日のザ・フーの演奏がまた凄まじいテンション。完全に往年の彼らを彷彿とさせる域にまで到達してしまったのです。2022年のザ・フーがここまで見事なライブ・アクトに進化してくれたとは。オクラホマでも素晴らしい演奏が聞かれましたが、この日はもはやネクスト・レベル。

これほどまで素晴らしい演奏と盛り上がりを見せたのには理由があります。そう、シンシナティといえばザ・フーのキャリアに大きな影を落としてしまった1979年ツアーにおける悲劇の舞台。もちろんこの日もピートが「TOMMY」パートの後でそのことに関しても触れている。
観客からしてみれば「ザ・フーがまたシンシナティに来てくれた…」という訳で、それがこの日の凄まじい盛り上がりにつながっている。つまり、この日はバンドと観客の中に共有された思いが見事に化学反応を起こした結果だったのですね。
そんな力のこもったザ・フーの演奏ぶりはライブ前半「TOMMY」パートからして明らか。そこが終わった後、またしても「Eminence Front」が凄く盛り上がるのは本ツアーどの音源を聞いても感心させられる場面（日本だと考えられない）ですが、この日も同曲は人気絶頂。
さらに「The Seeker」や「You Better You Bet」などはザック・スターキーのドラミングが壮絶。ロジャーの歌、ピートのギターそれぞれに反応しながら叩いている様子が高音質ですので手に取るように分かる。
中でもロジャーの歌に合わせて阿吽の呼吸を見せるザックのドラミングはそれこそキース・ムーンを偲ばせるものと言え、どうしてもその感覚が掴めなかったケニー・ジョーンズ（これがロジャーには大きな不満となっていた）との違いを見せつけます。
そして最初に触れたようにライブ終盤の盛り上がりときたら鳥肌が立つほどなのですが、そんな状況で披露された「QUADROPHENIA」パートに至っては1973年にタイムスリップしたかのよう。そんな2022年のザ・フーが生み出した掛け値なしの名演を素晴らしい音質にて、心ゆくまで味わってください！
