The Who, who released the highly acclaimed album “WHO” at the end of 2019, was supposed to do a big tour with the album in 2020. However, as you know, all the activities scheduled for Korona-ka are blank. For that reason, the long-awaited tour around the world has been held since the end of April under the title of “THE WHO HITS BACK” tour.
Roger Daltrey is now 78 years old and Pete Townshend is 76 years old (soon 77), and I’m just grateful that he decided to resume live activities in Korona-ka.
It is natural that you would like to ask even if you are not a maniac if it is such a latest tour. So this time we will release the latest live concert in Austin on May 3rd. On this day, both audience recordings and videos appeared, and in addition, both were of good quality. In that case, it cannot be said that there is no coupling.

First of all, the audience recording has a really wonderful sound quality, and it listens carefully with a sense of distance and clearness. It’s different from the recording state that is described as “sound board”, but it gives a clear impression of the performance and gives a good sense of presence.
The composition of the live started with the excerpt of “TOMMY”, and while the songs of each age were sandwiched between them, the excerpt of “QUADROPHENIA” was the finale, which was an easy-to-understand and novel development. Also, on the “TEENAGE CANCER TRUST” stage that took place before the tour started, Jody Linscott struck a rhythm instead of Zak Starkey who was on his honeymoon, but Zak is back here. As usual, he supports the band with wonderful drumming that respects Keith Moon.
In addition, Pete devoted himself to rhythm play as in the 1989 tour for the “TOMMY” part, and his younger brother and longtime supporter Simon was in charge of the lead guitar. Pete also played the lead from “Who Are You?” And showed that he was still full of rock.

The coupled audience video of the same day was shot from a fairly low front position, and although there was no close-up, the image quality was super clear with the best angle so that the facial expressions of the members on the stage could be seen. At the beginning of the “TOMMY” part, Roger holding a tambourine in both hands, or the action of yesteryear such as turning the microphone exploded from the beginning of the live.
In this way, when you look at the video, Pete in the “TOMMY” part is not in good condition with the main strat, and there are scenes with a feeling of groping unique to the first half of the tour, such as exchanging with the sub red strat on the way.
However, I’m glad that Pete is also playing the guitar lively from “Who Are You?”. What’s amazing is that the audience’s reaction to the song and even later numbers like “Eminence Front” is very enthusiastic. Perhaps he was relieved by such a positive reaction, and at the end of the live “5.15”, he finally jumped out from Pete to the legendary treasure sword “Windmill playing method”. From their appearance, expectations are high for how the tour will evolve. This is already a classic premonition with the first release from the latest tour!

2019年の末に激賞されたアルバム「WHO」をリリースしたザ・フーは本来であれば2020年に同アルバムを引っ提げたツアーを大々的に行うはずでした。ところが、ご存じのようにコロナ禍で活動予定はすべてが白紙に。それだけに世界中が待ち望んだツアーは4月末から「THE WHO HITS BACK」ツアーと題されて敢行されています。
今やロジャー・ダルトリーは78歳、ピート・タウンゼントは76歳（もうすぐ77）という年齢であり、なおかつコロナ禍においてライブ活動の再開を決断してくれたことは感謝しかありません。
そんな最新ツアーであればマニアでなくとも聞いてみたいと思うのは当然のこと。そこで今回は5月3日にオースティンで行われた最新ライブをリリースいたします。何とこの日はオーディエンス録音と動画の両方が出現、おまけにどちらもクオリティが良好ときた。となればカップリングしない訳にはゆきません。

まずオーディエンス録音の方は実に素晴らしい音質で、程よい距離感とクリアネスでじっくり聞きこませてくれる。「まるでサウンドボード」と形容されるような録音状態とは違いますが、演奏をクリアーに捉えてくれた上で臨場感もイイ感じ。
ライブの構成は「TOMMY」抜粋から幕を開け、間に各年代の曲を挟みつつ、最後は「QUADROPHENIA」の抜粋がフィナーレという分かりやすくも斬新な展開。またツアー開始前に行われた「TEENAGE CANCER TRUST」ステージではハネムーン中だったザック・スターキーの代わりにジョディ・リンスコットがリズムを刻みましたが、ここではザックが復帰。相変わらずキース・ムーンをリスペクトした素晴らしいドラミングでバンドを支えてくれます。
さらに「TOMMY」パートだけは1989年ツアーの時と同じようにピートはリズム・プレイに専念、リードギターは弟で長年のサポーターであるサイモンが担当。そんなピートも「Who Are You?」からはリードを弾きまくり、まだまだロックする気満々であることを見せつけてくれました。

カップリングされた同日のオーディエンス動画の方はかなりのフロント・ロウなポジションからの撮影で、クローズアップこそないものの、ステージ上のメンバーの表情も見て取れるほどの極上アングルで画質はスーパークリアー。「TOMMY」パートが始まったところでロジャーが両手にタンバリン持つ姿、あるいはマイク回しといった往年のアクションがライブ序盤から炸裂。
こうして映像で見ると「TOMMY」パートでのピートはメインのストラトの調子が思わしくなく、途中でサブの赤いストラトに交換するなどツアー前半ならではの手探り感のある場面も。
ところが「Who Are You?」からピートもイキイキとギターを弾いている様子がしっかり捉えられているのも嬉しいところ。驚くべきは同曲、さらには「Eminence Front」のような後期に属するナンバーにおける観客の反応が非常に熱狂的なこと。そんな好反応ぶりに気をよくしたのか、ライブ終盤「5.15」ではピートから遂に伝家の宝刀「風車奏法」まで飛び出す始末。そんな彼らの姿からはツアーがどのように進化してゆくのか期待が高まるというもの。これはもう最新ツアーからの第一弾リリースにて早くも定番の予感！
